 have you tried VueScan? http://www.hamrick.com/

The trial edition is free, and will show you if either the scanner or the
connection to your Mac is sick or not. The trial edition will put a watermark
on any images you scan and save.

I have been using VueScan for close to a decade with many different scanners,
including Canons, always with great results. I paid for the Professional
Edition those many years ago and therefore have free upgrades all the time.

Re: Arcane messages from router

2012-01-31 Thread Ray Forma
Ronda,

thanks for the info and the link to the very interesting article. Also, the
article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Aurora makes me feel better
about using a Mac, and a non-Microsoft browser.

 Hi Ray,

Yes, I had noticed that the IP Address is from China.

From what I understand these are automated port scans and are unfortunately
 quite routine.
They are not directed at you specifically but rather at the entire network
segment which you share with other subscribers.
The hackers are looking for weakly secured, exposed services and hosts that
they can intrude and commandeer to mount further attacks.

Your router drops this traffic on the floor in its default configuration
rendering it effectively harmless to you, unless you have configured it to
expose hosts or services to the wide area network.

There is no meaningful network performance impact. The packet traffic is
dropped and it's small compared to the background or your actual legitimate
 browsing activity.

Your Router is doing its job and Denial of Service (DoS) attack prevention
averts potential threats by scanning incoming traffic. The Router is
informing you of the attempts via email messages which you have set in your
 Router.

Most people aren’t even aware of these attempts, unless they have the alert
email messages set on their Router.
I did have my (since replaced) Netgear DG834G V4 alert me of such attempts,
but don’t on my new Netgear.
I don’t feel the need to be alerted all the time, I have my firewall on and
 WPA2 Personal security.

As I mentioned before, as long as you have your wireless network protected
with WPA2, and Firewall ON on your Macs, I would not worry about it.

3g Account Help.

2012-01-31 Thread Diana Graham Stevens
I just got a new SIM for my iPad. I activated it last night but then had to got
out. When I came home I was too tired to finish setting up the account so I
turned off 3G and used WiFi to check the outside temperature,

This morning I forgot it was on WiFi and attached it to the MacBookPro and it
transferred everything but no prompt to set up the account.

I disconnected the iPad, turned on 3G and reconnected. Still no prompt.

I need to do this before I go to hospital at lunch time. Can someone please
help?

Best wishes to all fro Diana

Re: 3g Account Help.

2012-01-31 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Diana,

To begin activating service on a 3G iPad, tap Settings Cellular Data View
Account, fill in the fields , tap the name of the plan that you want, and then
tap Next to continue the activation process.

Once your plan is active, if your iPad is connected to the cellular data
network, you’ll see an icon near the left of your status bar that indicates the
type of connection you have.

To disable 3G connectivity temporarily, you have two options:

1. Open the Settings app, and at the upper left, turn on Airplane Mode.
This turns off all wireless communications—Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, and GPS.
A white airplane icon appears in the status bar, indicating that the iPad is
in Airplane Mode.

Or
2 In the Settings app, tap Cellular Data, and set the Cellular Data switch to
Off.

Cheers,
Ronni

You may be doing an Accessibility zoom in. It can be configured to be
Control plus a two finger swipe up to zoom in and Control plus a two finger

can be turned off but I use it frequently to read fine print and thus have
