Re: free anti-virus software
I have never used any antivirus software in my Apple OS. Use it though in Window in VMWare Fusion. There are no known viruses for MAC. Trojans and malware are not viruses. Follow the safe browsing rules so you won't have to worry about viruses, trojans and malware. All real-time antivirus products slow down your computer, that is the nature of the game. So Sophos will slow down your computer. Norton software tends to always be bloated and not really that great to begin with, so I would leave iAntiVirus alone. If you feel you require Antivirus program on your Mac ClamXav 2.3.2 is highly recommended and Free. But DON'T download the App Store version, download from this link. http://www.clamxav.com/download.php# What are the differences between the version of ClamXav available to download here and the version on the Mac App Store? • The App Store version doesn't contain ClamXav Sentry, so it is not able to watch your computer for new files and scan them as they arrive. • There is no engine installation phase as the App Store requirements stipulate that everything must be self-contained within the app. • Virus definition updates are downloaded on a per-user basis. • Updates to the ClamXav app itself are taken care of via the Mac App Store. • Mac OS X 10.6 or greater is required. So to answer your Question: Are they worth having and will they work with my iMac running 10.6.8 ? It is your choice really, if having virus protection on your Mac is going to make you feel safer (more protected) go ahead. Personally I don't feel they are worth having. And Yes, they will run on your iMac running 10.6.8, just make sure you download the version compatible with OS X 10.6.8 Cheers, Ronni On 20/08/2012, at 12:07 PM, F.W. MAC APP DEALS
Hi all, I am new to Lion and want to take advantage of the Two Dollar Tuesday deals. I have a current iTunes account as I've purchased music in the past. I click on the app shown in the email I received, then a box opens asking what app to use, I've nominated iTunes music, which is probably incorrect. I finally get to the Apple Apps but cannot locate the original app I clicked on which I wanted to purchase. I've hunted around for some instruction, but unable to locate any. Can someone please put me on the correct path ? It amazes me how the ATO get away with not supporting other operating systems. Their reasoning 'Why' is just NOT good enough! /Quote Why isn't e-tax compatible with non-Windows operating systems? In considering the ongoing development of e-tax, a number of factors are taken into account which have an impact on our ability to provide taxpayers with a platform independent solution. Our highest priority each income year is updating e-tax so that it is compatible with changes to tax legislation to ensure the current level of service for 2.6 million taxpayers is maintained. We must allocate information technology resources necessary to achieve this before other enhancements can be considered. Will this change and when? Since 2007, we have continuously undertaken work to explore whether technology is available to make e-tax compatible with other operating systems, without necessitating a major redevelopment. In 2011-12, due to recent developments in the technology used to produce e-tax, we have worked toward an e-tax application for Apple Mac systems. However complexities in applying this recent technology, including issues associated with the ability to meet the required level of security and usability (including for vision impaired users) mean that we are unable to make e-tax compatible with Apple Mac systems to allow users to prepare and lodge their 2012 tax return at this time. We are however continuing to work through these issues with a view to delivery of a version suitable for Mac users in 2012-13. We are also investigating, as a longer term solution, a move to a web-based e-taxproduct. One of the major considerations in doing this will be balancing the need for greater usability and our security requirements to ensure that taxpayer information is protected - particularly with mobile computing devices. /End Quote: Quote taken from here: http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.aspx?menuid=0doc=/content/73931.htmpage=2 Cheers, Ronni On 20/08/2012, at 9:44 AM, Severin Crisp sevcr...@westnet.com.au wrote: Now that is an interesting thought, Peter! If the emails are not a form of advertising (ie, SPAM), then you're probably simply the victim of a virus running on the computer of someone you may have never even met. This type of virus typically infects a Windows computer at some point, usually through an email attachment, and starts sending random emails to random email addresses in the user's address book, with a copy of itself as an attachment, thereby spreading the problem. The more vicious ones will choose one address for the To address and another for the From address, so it becomes impossible to determine from where the original behaviour started. In your case it simply means that someone you have sent an email to at some point has become infected with one of these things. There's not much you can do about these unfortunately except ignore them. Try to determine if there's any consistency about them which you can filter out by means of a Rule so you move them out of your Inbox if possible, but under no circumstances should you reply to any of them. If the emails are truly random your reply will be pointless, and if they are malicious in any way you are simply confirming your existence on the Net and their frequency will increase.
