Re: [WAMUG] Mailboxes - Authentication Failures

Hi Pete

The first thing I’d recommend would be to check the settings and adjust.
Sometimes it can just be a slight change in a setting that throws it out.
In Mail - Preferences - Accounts
Clcik on the account on the left hand side, then on the right hand side click
on “Server Settings”.
If the account has the setting “Automatically manage connection settings” (for
both incoming and outgoing), untick those.
This then gives you more control to adjust settings.

You can play around with the ports and Use TLS/SSL. And also ensure both are
set to “authentication” Password.
The main ports can differ depending on your connection, but you can sort of
“mix and match” and try a different port to see if it helps.

Internode recommend the following ports -
https://www.internode.on.net/support/guides/email/secure_email/

If using IMAp and an SSL connection then it’s 993 for IMAP incoming and 995 for
Outgoing. (But you can also use port 143 for incoming and 465 for SMTP outgoing.

They would be the main ones to try and adjust. Then see how it goes.
Sometimes you have to Quit and re-open Mail for it to “adjust” to the new
setting.

If using you’re IMAP accounts, then yes it’s fine to delete them and re-add
them - as everything will still be on the server.
If using POP accounts however, then if you delete it, everything in Inbox,
Sent, Trash folders will be deleted. (So need to save them to local On My Mac
folders).

But I’d try playing around with the settings first and see how it goes.

Kind regards
Daniel

[WAMUG] Mailboxes - Authentication Failures

2023-07-10 Thread Pete Smith via WAMUG
   G’day all.

Has anyone had problems with their email (Apple Mail) since updating to
the latest macOS or iOS? My iMac is running macOS 13.4.1 Ventura and my
iPhone XR and iPad Pro (9.7-inch) are both running iOS 16.5.1. The
problem I am having is this:

I have an Internode (service provider) account that has a main mailbox
but also allows up to four extra mailboxes. I have utilised three extra
so I am using four and hence have four email accounts in Mail for
Internode. I also have a Hotmail account. The main Internode account
(this “smudders" one) is accessed only from my iMac. The three others,
“iPhone", “iPad" and “2effs” (abbreviated mailbox names) are received
on the iPhone XR, the iPad Pro and the iMac (as is the Hotmail).

However, since 26 June for my iMac and 27 June for my iPhone they will
not receive any mail from the “iPhone” or “iPad” mailboxes. More
appropriately, they cannot access the mailboxes. The iMac brings up a
dialogue box with Online Status “iPhone" authentication failed and the
same for the “iPad” mailbox but with the mailbox address of “iPad”
instead. The iPhone XR brings up an “Account Error” with the details as
Cannot Get Mail iPhone Email is currently unavailable. The same for the
   "iPad” mailbox.

Interestingly, I finally got around to checking my iPad Pro today and
guess what? It’s accessing and downloading the mail no problems!

The iMac has no problems accessing the “smudders and “2effs” mailboxes
and the iPhone XR can access the “2effs” mailboxes OK too. (Hotmail is
   fine on both devices too.)

I have checked with Internode and all is working well their end. Their
advice was that the updates may have upset something my end. They also
suggested and a little bit of internet research seems to indicate that
if I delete the accounts and re add them, that may solve the problem.

I download all my emails from Internode physically onto my various
devices. The iMac is the main repository for all mailboxes with emails
going back to 2008 when I first got a Mac. The iPhone XR also a small
repository of emails. Once downloaded, the emails are deleted off the
Internode server after about 30 days from memory.

Which brings me to my main question: If I delete the “iPhone” and
“iPad” accounts from the iMac and reinstall them, will I lose all those
old emails? The same for the iPhone XR?

I do have the emails backed-up as the system is backed-up regularly
with Carbon Copy but the point is would I lose the emails from the iMac
   and or iPhone hard drives?

I hope that all makes sense.
