[WAMUG] Problem linking one iMac to another iMac

2024-05-18 Thread Matt Falvey via WAMUG
Hi, I have just bought an iMac that is running Monterey 12.7.4 and I am
having problems with file sharing it to another iMac running High
   Sierra 10.13.6.

I have file sharing on on both in System Preferences.

On the Monterey iMac on it says it can be reached and and gives me the
smb - gateway address. When I go to Finder>go>Connect to Server on the
High Sierra iMac, the Monterey iMac smb - gateway address doesn’t show.
   (My other ones do.)

I click Browse and instead of it finding and displaying the smb -
gateway in the Connect to Server window, Server Address, it opens a new
   Network window with :

Remote Volumes> Network>Mac>MattiMac2015 (theMontereyiMac) and and
arrow allowing me to open more files, which if I click on it show me
the HD name and my User Name

But also listed under Remote Volumes is My User name “Matt”, when I
click on that it lists all the main folders, Applications, Calibre
Library, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Incomplete, Library, Media,
Movies, Music, Pictures, Sites, To be Worked on.

All of them open and show the various sub folders and files EXCEPT:
   Desktop, Documents & Downloads.

Desktop & Documents folders have a small triangle next to their names
but nothing opens when clicking on it, the Downloads folder does not
have the triangle instead it has an arrow in the bottom right hand
   corner.

If anyone is able to let me know how to find the smb - gateway address
via the Server Address in the Connect to Server window that would be
   great.

And if anyone can let me know how to make the Desktop, Documents and
Downloads folder show their contents, (Documents being the priority in
sharing), just as the other are, well at least that would be a
secondary way of connecting the two iMacs if I can’t do it via smb -
   gateway.

   Take care.

[WAMUG] Hotmail/Live Internet Account - Password Problems

2024-05-14 Thread Matt Falvey via WAMUG
Hi, I have an ongoing problem with my hotmail account, which I believe
is now under the auspices of Microsoft Live.

I have 3 iMacs shared side by side and keep getting at random times on
either of them a warning “Mail Password Required, Enter password for
“” in Internet Accounts” and the Internet Accounts box opening.

I have Microsoft changed my password, gone to the
[1]outlook.live.com page and opened up the hotmail/live mail there, so
   the password is good.

I have then come back to System Preferences>Internet Accounts, selected
the hotmail account and put the same password in the “Password” box and
emails arrive as per normal. I have then sent a test email from my Mac
Mail email to the hotmail and it arrived instantly.

In the All Inboxes of the Mac Mail next to the hotmail account there is
a 1 showing that one new email has arrived, there in no tilde
   indicating that hotmail is offline.

Then the warning pops up again!

Is there a way to resolve this? Or do I just live with it seeing as the
   emails are still getting through?

   Any suggestions welcome.

[WAMUG] Missing emails from "Mail" on iMac - how to restore from back up

2023-11-01 Thread Matt Falvey via WAMUG
Hi Today for some unknown reason all the emails in a folder on Mac Mail
and its two sub folders have gone missing. I can’t find them anywhere.

I have a reasonably recent back up and I have found what appear to be
the missing folder and emails under User>Library>Mail.

But perhaps it is the way it is backed up by Super Duper, that even
though the actual emails appear to be the ones I am searching for,
their titles and the way they are stored bear no resemblance to the way
they looked in Mac Mail. (I thought Super Duper was supposed to be
making an exact bootable copy, it doesn’t look like that to me.)

For example the main Folder in Mac Mail is LEJOG and the two sub
folders are LEJOG Accommodation and LEJOG Travel Bookings. the various
emails where stored in these folders under whatever title they arrived
   or were sent in.

On the back up I get to Library>Mail then V5 then a file called
538F0432-41E5-400C-B9AB-6E026017FC64 and in that I find a small mailbox
   icon followed by LEJOG.mbox

   That then opens up into:

   -a folder 71165733-A883-43D5-A187-E56D73DF5964

   -Info.plist

   -LEJOG Accomodation.mbox

   -LEJOG Travel Bookings.mbox

The two m.box both have a folder with a long alpha numeric title
similar to the above and then the all have a Data Folder, various
single digit numeric folders and most of these contain a folder called
   Messages.

The messages are indeed the missing emails but are in a format I have
never seen before e.g. an icon of a letter and 42380.emix.

Okay my question is, how do I get these emails from the LEJOG.mbox back
into their respective main and sub folder in Mail on my iMac?

   Any ideas appreciated.

   Take care.

[WAMUG] A software update is requied to connect to XXXXX's iPhone

2023-06-03 Thread Matt Falvey via WAMUG
Hi I am having major problems trying to import photos from my wives
   iPhone 12 to her iMac Core Retina i5 3.1 21.5” (4K, Late 2015). (Which
has 8GB of RAM, (which according to everymac is not upgradeable after
   purchase.)

Initially when I tried to import using Photo’s it was running El
Capitan and I got the message that it didn’t recognise the HEIC photos
on the iPhone and that I would have to upgrade to 10.14.6 Mojave.

So I backed up on two disks and installed Mojave. Once Mojave was
installed I thought I would open Photos and see what happened, it ran
through an “upgrade”. So I then backed that up using one of the back up
disks, this took 30 hours!!! I could see things were not looking good.

So then today I tried to import post upgrade and got the message, "A
software upgrade is required to connect to X’s iPhone, would you
like to download and instal this update now?” I had a look and it
wanted me to instal Monterey 12.6.6. I believe the iMac is technically
able to function wth Monterey, but as the more modern operating systems
use more and more RAM, I wonder just how effectively it would operate
if I have to go down this avenue?

Now I think this is really odd why would I get the recommendation to
upgrade to Mojave if it was incompatible?

I looked on the web and some people had described a method of
importation using Image Capture. I tried that also and it didn’t work
as the first part of the process, “Open Photos on your Mac and choose
‘Import from iPhone’ from the Import menu”, didn’t work as the iPhone
does not show up on the Mac, so I don’t get that option . I did try
just using Image Capture independently, with “Photos” as the
destination in the import to box at the bottom and that too failed.

I would appreciate if anyone has any idea of what I can/should do next?

With regard to taking 30 odd hours to write to the back up disk, it was
about 526GB on a 2TB disk. I suspected that maybe something was wrong
with the iMac, so I tried to use DiskWarrior to find that DiskWarrior
Recovery Maker is incompatible with the APFS system that comes with
Mojave and so is Disk Utility. I would hardly call that progress.

I have reset the PRAM and the SMC, but would like to know if anyone has
any ideas as to how with the APFS system I can verify and if necessary
repair my hard drive, if in fact that is an issue?

   Take care.

[WAMUG] Web site hosts - Information - Recommendations

Hi, I would like to thank everyone one who replied to my query regarding Vodien
hosting.

I didn’t realise that Vodien had such a bad reputation, but it feels better to
know that, the issue was Vodien related and not accidentally created by me.

I will be speaking to Daniel today to try and make alternate arrangements.

Thanks again.

[WAMUG] Web site hosts - Information - Recommendations

2023-01-21 Thread Matt Falvey via WAMUG
Hi, I know this is not strictly mac related, but it is about webs site hosting
mac a product from Reunion family tree application on The Next Generation of
Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG).

I have had a family tree website for many years hosted by Webcity which were
taken over by Vodien Internet Solutions, based in Singapore around mid 2020.

On 1 Jan 2023 I noticed my site was down and thought it may be related to the
change of the year so I let it go before notifying them on the 3rd. Since then
they have managed to get the website up intermittently about 3 or 4 times.

(I registered my Domain name with Crazy Domains and in mid 2020 I received
notification that they would be transferring their operation to Dreamscape
Networks International, based in Singapore, but still operating under the same
name.)

As the website was continually off line I thought I would contact Crazy Domains
to See if there was anything wrong with my Domain registration, which may have
explained why the site was not working,. The technician there was able to
access my website and everything that had been happening since I lodged my
complaint with Vodien. (I subsequently found out they are the same company.)

Any way it seems he knew what was wrong and told me to get in touch with auDA
as there was nothing, they could or were allowed to do.

I had never heard of the auDA, but they are a non profit .au Domain
Adminstration that oversees the operation and management framework of the .au
domain on the internet.

Apparently they advised Vodien on 19 Dec 2022 that a Ph ishing scam
impersonating the America First Credit Union was trying to acquire account
numbers and passwords, they gave Vodien 72 hours to fix it and when they
didn’t’ they blocked the website with a message to them serverHold DNS abuse.
They said Phishing had been reported by, various organisation.

auDa had to tell me what to tell Vodien what the problem was and how to fix the
problem.

So Vodien did that and the website came back up and went back down again.

Then then said to fix it they would need to go back to a September back up,
reinstall it and everything will be working fine after that . They did that and
the same problem is persisting, the website is down.

So I asked them a couple of days ago, were they going to seriously attempt to
fix the problem, expedite it to a senior member so I can get the service I
require and what compensation I will be receiving?

They came back with, they had moved it up the chain and the senior engineer
recommended that I authorise them migrating the website to a new server for
free. I asked them what is the benefit of going to the new server. They
replied that the new server has been securely updated and is free of any
problems. They also offered 3 months extension of my current contract for free.

Has anyone had any similar issues? Or has anyone with any knowledge of hosting
any suggestions as to whether it is a good idea to move to the new server or
not? (I presume if I don’t, I won’t have a website.)

Finally can anyone recommend a family tree friendly host service, (possibly
Australian based), for when I almost certainly choose to move?

Thanks

Matt.

Hi, I have been able to work it out, much to my embarrassment, but hopefully

Adam sent me an attachment from Brother support as to the proper way to

[WAMUG] Connecting iMac to iMac with 5G

2022-10-08 Thread Matt Falvey via WAMUG
Hi, I have just joined Telstra 5G to improve my NBN download speed from an
average of 27 Mbps.

I normally have 3 iMacs linked via wifi but since I have started using the 5G I
have been unable to link them up. I normal do so by Finder>Go>Connect to Server
and then using either the smb of afp favorite servers.

Also I have been unable to get my Brother HL-L2375DW to show up or even to link
that through any of the 3 iMacs. I have tried using the Brother Instalation
disc and it can’t find the printer over the wifi.

Anyone have any idea as to how I can get things linked up?

Thanks
