[WAMUG] 3G Closure affecting Apple Watch?

2023-12-01 Thread Rod Blitvich via WAMUG
   Hi Folks

An email from Telstra has me wondering if I need to get a new Apple
   Watch?

I have a Series 4 (2018):

Many smart watches and wearables can operate in “standalone” mode. This
means you can make and receive calls or use data without having to
   carry a smartphone.

While most smart watches and wearables are 4G compatible, some do not
support our main 4G frequency band, 700 MHz (also known as B28). Once
we turn off 3G from 30 June 2024, these devices will only work on a
limited set of 4G frequencies and as a result, may experience a
reduction in Telstra mobile network coverage.

You’ll still be able to use data or make voice calls using the cellular
feature on your device, but the service may work intermittently on our
mobile network. When your smart watch or wearable is connected to your
mobile handset via Bluetooth, your experience will be based on your
   handset’s network capability.

   Impacted devices include:

 * Apple Watch Series 3
 * Apple Watch Series 4
 * Apple Watch Series 5
 * Galaxy Watch
 * Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2

Re: [WAMUG] Which Email address?

2023-11-08 Thread Rod Blitvich via WAMUG
   Thank you everyone.

I have opted in to The Messaging Company (I think following Daniel K’s
   instructions).

I have changed my “send new mail address" in Apple Mail to
   [1]bli...@mac.com

I will also keep my iinet address and review this when TMC decide to
   start charging.

I guess I have a year to change email address for various
accounts/logins from my iinet one to my mac.com one.

   Cheers

Westnet advised me a couple of months back too they are outsourcing
 the
email management. This was received with big groans. However,
 Westnet
(and iinet) are outsourcing the email management to The Messaging
Company. You have the choice to Opt In to their plan, in which case
they will manage the full migration of your Westnet (or iinet) Mail
accounts to The Messaging Company, but importantly you will keep
exactly the same email address afterwards. I have opted in as
 making a
change to a different email address would be a huge undertaking
 with
all the tangles with multiple other subscriptions, providers etc my
email address is associated with. Same to for the 4 other family
members in my family. I dug further into this - the first year of
 email
management is free with The Messaging Company and then from year 2,
they will charge a fee for the email management. If I look at my
Westnet plan, the current email management fee will disappear form
 day
1 after migration and thereafter. I don't know yet how much The
Messaging Company will charge from year 2.
You can ring the helpline for further details if other questions or
there is an FAQ page for the commonly asked questions.

[WAMUG] Mobile Plans Advice Please: Telstra, JBHIFI Telstra etc

2022-09-09 Thread Rod Blitvich via WAMUG
Hi Folks
I have a Telstra Moblie Plan Small with my iPhone X
If I decide it’s time to upgrade to the iPhone 14 AND I want to stay with
Telstra (for remote area coverage) - do you have any advice please?
My current Telstra plan gives me 40 GB. I rarely use 10 GB.

Should I stay on my current Telstra Moblie Plan Small @ $55 per month?
Or Shift to a new Telstra Upfront Mobile Plan Basic @ $58 with 40 GB and capped
speed 250Mbps 4G and 5G?
Or JB HiFi Telstra plan 60 GB @ $49, 3G, 4G/4GX BUT not 5G?
OR - do you recommend any other plan with Telstra as the carrier?

https://www.whistleout.com.au/ <https://www.whistleout.com.au/> doesn’t seem to
list anything with Telstra carrier AND 5G under $68

Many thanks for your advice

Blitto

Re: [WAMUG] External Monitor for MacBook Pro

2022-05-17 Thread Rod Blitvich
Thanks to everyone for your useful advice.
So I’m thinking it doesn’t seem essential to spend big bucks.
Nor does it seem the monitor needs to be labelled “mac compatible”.
Probably don’t need 4K resolution, but 1920x1080 or 2560 x 1440 might be nice.

I am wondering whether Brightness specs are important? Some are 250 nits?
Others are 300 or higher.

Anyway going to look around at Officeworks and JB.

But First - I HAVE TO TIDY THE STUDY!
藍

Thanks again everyone
Blitto

Can one buy any external monitor (~$600) or does it have to be mac compatible

Re: [WAMUG] Display cable to connect 2009 27 inch iMac to 2021 M1 MacBook Pro

2022-05-15 Thread Rod Blitvich
Hi Neil
Thanks for the informative details.
What started me thinking was this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP1fnrHNuTE=0s
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP1fnrHNuTE=0s>

Just found this on Apple:
Maybe it suggests as your info does that it won’t work
24-inch and 27-inch iMac models introduced in 2009 and 2010
To use any of these iMac models as an external display:
The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier
<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201260> installed.
The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or
earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPort cable

Hi Stephen
I use Apple Maps around town, but when I travel - Google Maps is good. I can
download maps so I can use them when I am off-line, especially overseas. Plus I
can save places, restuarants, shops etc as favourites.
Cheers

It can be especially handy because it is truly a device-to-device transfer that
works even when neither device has internet access, although Wi-Fi and

RANT WARNING! iiNet NBN

2019-02-16 Thread Rod Blitvich
Sorry - smoke coming out of my ears
I guess this is the sad result of a great WA company being taken over by TPG
I have been a loyal iiNet customer for 25 years

15 days ago I signed up with iiNet to switch from iiNet Broadband to iiNet NBN
After numerous stuff-ups, being on hold for 20 - 40 minutes at a time, not
receiving promised call-backs, receiving a call-back yesterday FIVE hours after
requesting one etc I am still not connected to the NBN.

Finally my hardware arrived on Friday afternoon.
I connected it as instructed on Saturday - guess what? It doesn’t work.
Finally have been told today that it can’t proceed as iiNet are waiting for my
connection request to be lodged with NBN.CO
I asked the caller whose job was that - she replied -“iinet’s”
Not satisfactory?

Don’t worry sir it should all be taken care of in the next 2 to 3 days.
And don’t disconnect anything in the meantime
So now I wait for up to another 3 days with no Internet (as i had to disconnect
my existing Broadband.

Far-Out

Flikr problems

2017-11-23 Thread Rod Blitvich
Hi
I tried to share an album of photos from Flikr.
It seems people must have a Flikr login to view them - that didn’t used to be
the case
Also - to log in to Flikr you now have to login to Yahoo 7 - strange??

Anyone else experience these problems?

Replace Timecapsule????

2017-08-12 Thread Rod Blitvich
Hi WAMUGers
Haven’t been able to complete a wirelessTime Machine backup for a while.
OS 10.12.6

Have a feeling the Time Capsule goes on the blink now and then.
Complicated by the TC disk getting pretty full and the attached external Hard
drive giving up the ghost.
Bought a new external hard drive and plugged it into the TimeCapsule and
started backing up last night.
After a few hours Time Machine just failed/quit - no error message.
Tried again today - failed again after a few hours (60GB done out of 500)

So please:
1) Do I get rid of the Timecapsule?
2) Can my wireless internet and attached Time Machine external backup drive
work from my iiNet modem/router
3) other suggestions?

many thanks
Blitto

Re: New Macbook Pros?

2016-10-31 Thread Rod Blitvich
Hi everyone
I really sweated on buying the new 12 inch Macbook 18 months ago.
512 GB internal drive
Must say I’m really pleased with it!
So light and easy to pull out in the middle of a meeting, in the lounge chair,
in bed etc etc
Don’t often have the need for plugging in peripherals, but when I do- the apple
adaptors do the trick.
Plug in a usb flash drive, a usb hard drive or a projector cable no worries.

Regarding managing photos: - I got to the stage where I now use Aperture to
manage my Photo Library.
I select the option to store my original files on an external drive and low res
versions on the Macbook.
Still have 50 GB free - but I’m a terrible hoarder!

No longer making lots of movies.
A teeny bit of Photoshop and plenty of Aperture, MacPhun Creative Kit and
Plug-ins, Aurora HD a teeny bit etc
When I do the School Newsletter I use the school 15 inch Macbook Pro - just for
a bit of screen real-estate.

cheers
Blitto

Hi Folks
Please can you tell me the expected lifespan of an Apple Time Capsule?
Mine is 5 years old.
It is occaisionly not appearing on Airport Utility - i just pull the power plug
and then allow it to re-start.

Can I replace it just with a hard drive plugged into my router?
Will I still be able to use Time Machine with this new set-up?

Re: iPhone 7 or 8?

2016-09-16 Thread Rod Blitvich
Dear Daniel, Ronni, Susan, Peter and Robin
Thanks for your thoughtful input.
Yes - photography is important to me.
I have to stay with Telstra for my bush trips.
The 7S is too big for my pocket.
I can only justify a new phone every 3 or more years.
I’m thinking ATM to wait for the 8 and maybe get a new battery for my current 5.

And I am currently jealously watching my daughter set up her new 7!
:)

Swelling Macbook Air

2016-05-12 Thread Rod Blitvich
Dear WAMUGers
We have a macbook air at school- around 6 years old that has suddenly started
to swell.
I believe this is due to the battery swelling.
Is this dangerous?
How should it be disposed of?
your advice appreciated

Is it as serious as suggested below
ta
Blitto

"Rod. Yes its fking dangerous! Don’t plug it in! Call the WA bomb squad and
walk away! Or cover yourself in serious protective garments and remove the
battery. Seriously heavy duty gloves and eye protection at least! If you are
successful and haven’t received 3rd degreed burns, place the battery in a
sealed appropriate bag and dispose as it as if it was a normal battery. The
macbook is 6 years old put it in a display case, or use it as part of your
computer history class."

Re: GPS vs iPad mini

thanks Peter
My prime use would be for off the bitumen in the car. in the Kimberley
eg Gibb River rd, Dampier Peninsula etc

The Hema paper maps are quite useful for up there, so i thought having them
live on the iPad mini would be good.
