Re: Attached USB devices not shown in Finder

2018-01-03 Thread Ronni Brown
Hello again Graham before I sign off for the day.

If you still experience problems… it could be a sleep issue.
There are a number of reasons why your Mac won’t recognise a drive.
If you have a drive already mounted and your system goes to sleep, it also
powers down ports, including USB ports.
When you wake your Mac up, for whatever reason, your external drive does not
wake up.

Sometimes relaunching the Finder might help.
To Relaunch Finder: Hold ‘Option’ Key on Finder icon in Dock select ‘Relaunch’.

With my USB Thumb drives I prefer to always eject them safely after I’ve
finished using them because not doing so risks damage to the data on the thumb
drive.

It’s a good idea to get in the habit of removing your media drives safely. It
doesn’t always happen, but if you fail to remove your drives properly while
they’re busy doing something, you might just mess something up on the drive
itself.

Cheers,
Ronni

Then the USB devices will show in both Finder sidebar & on the Desktop and

 Hello Ronni,

Firstly - all the best to you for 2018.

In Finder Preferences all boxes are ticked except the iMac itself but
there is no “Desktop” under Devices. Desktop appears under Favorites.

None of the Devices shown in Sidebar are ever on the Desktop so I can’t
 use the Desktop method (Command-E)

So the bottom line is that unless the device is shown under “Devices” in
the Sidebar, I have no way of safely ejecting the device (assuming it is
not there but is plugged into the USB port) if I need to to use the USB
 port for some other device.

Re: Attached USB devices not shown in Finder

2018-01-03 Thread Graham Rabe
Hello Ronni,

Firstly - all the best to you for 2018.

In Finder Preferences all boxes are ticked except the iMac itself but there is
no “Desktop” under Devices. Desktop appears under Favorites.

None of the Devices shown in Sidebar are ever on the Desktop so I can’t use the
Desktop method (Command-E)

So the bottom line is that unless the device is shown under “Devices” in the
Sidebar, I have no way of safely ejecting the device (assuming it is not there
but is plugged into the USB port) if I need to to use the USB port for some
other device.

Cheers,

Graham

Attached USB devices not shown in Finder

2018-01-02 Thread Graham Rabe
When I attach a USB thumb drive or WD hard drive or Garmin device to my iMac
they show up in the usual place in Finder - under “Devices”.

But lately when I go to remove the device in Finder after a day or two, the
device is no longer shown there. When I detach the device from the USB port, I
get the message that I have not ejected the device properly.

But it is nowhere to be seen in Finder when trying to eject it properly.

Any ideas about what may be causing the problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks,

Graham
