Re: Facebook Messages

2012-09-26 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Diana,

Have you deleted your Facebook Account?
Have you asked to be unsubscribed by using the unsubscribe link at the end
of the Facebook email?

There is an option on Facebook that scans the contents of a members' address
book and sends out invites to people not already on Facebook. If someone has
done this then you should have at least heard of them, having presumably
exchanged e-mails at some point in the past.

Cheers,
Ronni

Now I have a message with six names I do recognize, three I have corresponded

 WAMUG.

Where did Facebook find these people? Is there something wrong with the way
my network is set up? Is there anything I can do to prevent this intrusion?

Re: Facebook Messages

2012-09-26 Thread Diana Graham Stevens
Thanks Ronni

I have unsubscribed from the email and I shall delete my account.

I had assumed the other emails about unknown people were part of a scam, I
don't think they appeared the same as this one but I did not study them
seriously.

The three people I have corresponded with are in my Address Book, but for the
other three there are only emails from WAMUG, and from lists on RootsWeb and
Yahoo, which I saved because they contained useful information. In one case the
person's full name only appears in the body of the text not in the address
line. They must have harvested all the email addresses from a great stack of
emails, I am surprised they got so few matches with people on Facebook!

Best wishes from Diana

Re: Facebook Messages

2012-09-26 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Diana,

If you are concerned that the Facebook email about unknown people might not
have come from Facebook, check the links contained in the e-mail by examining
the source (the option will vary depending on your e-mail client).
If you are using Apple Mail:
Select the Message, then Go To View Message Raw Source.

Check that the message has come from Facebook.
It could be a scam designed to get you to think you are signing up to Facebook
as a means of getting personal details from you.

It sounds like you've done the sensible thing and deleted your Facebook Account
and not clicked on any of the links in the emails other than the Unsubscribe
at the bottom.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni

It is a while since I got the 'unknown people' messages but if I get any more I
shall look at the Raw Source as you suggest.

About the same time I saw a warning on one of my mailing lists about scam
messages from Facebook, I assumed that's what they were but I did not bother
checking.

Best wishes from Diana
