Costs but is worth it.

I was using Virex but it was an awful bit of bloatware that I found
thoroughly annoying.

Would love to hear what's working in the field!

Cheers, Antony.

Using ClamXav 1.1.1 to watch email and downloads on iMac Intel 2.4GHz.
Been using ClamXav since it appeared. No infections, no special
problems.

I use Google Apps (Gmail) for mail, so that does virus scanning as
well as spam filtering.
Am also Little Snitch user - LS notifies you whenever any application
requests an outgoing network connection (you can set up an approval as
a one off or permanently, or deny one off or permanently). So whenever
any app tries to connect out/phone home, I know.

I tried out the new version of Clam AV X. Seems to work like a charm
and it's totally free! (donationware).

http://www.clamxav.com/

Does all the stuff the big boys do now, schedule updates, email
scanning, watched folders, scheduled scans.

I tried it on a Macbook with a large archive of email in Eudora format
that had been imported to Entourage. Picked up virus's in both
databases..

My testing has not been extensive but can't find a reason why why you
would go past this at the price. On that note I encourage all my
client if they use something free/donation to make a donation. It
makes the world go around.

I'd be interested to hear feedback from others as it's going into my
small list of software that I recommend without reservation to people.

Rob

Hello Antony, Rob WAMUGers,

I recommend Mac users read this entire article by Rich Mogull who is a
Computer Security Expert first. It is quite informative.
Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software? - http://db.tidbits.com/article/9511

Re: ClamXav -- I downloaded ClamXav v1.1.1 (185) to test it out.

After Installing ClamXav and installing it's Contextual Menu Item (so
you can always use it to scan individual files),
one thing I noticed that people want to be careful about is setting
the Preferences for ClamXav.

In Preferences General - I would NOT recommend turning on
Quarantine infected files to: It does give you are warning not to
use this option if you have set your email to be scanned or watched. I
suggest your email ( downloads) are probably the most important files
to be scanning for viruses etc.
If you have Quarantine infected files to a folder turned on. If a
message in your email mailbox is infected, this option has the
potential to move your ENTIRE MAILBOX away from where it should be!
--- i.e. You could loose all your mail from within your Mail
Application.
You could find it and place it back where it came from, but it's a bit
of a hassle.

So I DON'T have this option checked, I have checked in General Prefs,
under Miscellaneous Options - Scan e-mail files Alert on virus
detection.

More about Preferences here:
http://www.clamxav.com/index.php?page=prefs

I noticed it was very slow updating it's virus definitions and
Main.cvd, but it was relatively quick to scan my email and did find 4
emails which I sent to Trash ( emptied Trash). These were emails I
had forwarded on to PayPal alerting them to spam mail I was receiving
some time back.

My conclusions are: If you feel you need Virus Protection on your Mac,
ClamXav is probably as good as any other and it is free (donation is
appreciated). Just be aware when setting it's Preferences.

Cheers,
Ronni
