ILO calls on abolition of child workers in Indonesia Monday, July 5, 2010 23:59 WIB | National | | Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The International Labour Organization (ILO) planned to abolish Indonesian child workers in the future. "Since early in 2000, important developments had taken place in efforts of abolishing child workers in Indonesia," Executive Director of International Affairs of the ILO in Jakarta Peter Van Rooij said in Jakarta Monday. Peter in a workshop observing World Day Against Child Workers at Borobudur Hotel in Jakarta said that progress had been made in reaching the government`s target of nine-year basic education for all children. Peter added that another important breakthrough was that the government has reduction of number of child workers as a program of conditional cash assistance, known as Hopeful Family Program (PKH). "We have conducted a household-based survey and found out that about 4 million children aged 5 to 17 are workers," Peter said. The national survey on child workers conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) in Indonesia in association with the ILO in August 2009, found that some 4 million children aged 5 to 17 years old are economically active, and 1.7 of the children were classified as child workers.(*) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
