I just remember someone saying that cutting Blender-internal floating point 
coordinates to integer accuracy results in ugly holes in the meshes (for 
obvious reasons).

Would it be reasonably easy to implement a PIE5 option? (drop-down menu, 
checkbox, ...)
We could then call floating point pies PIE version 5, extend the range of 
supported versions in imdload.c and this way make them "safe" for 2.0.
