I was experiencing this EXACT same problem yesterday and it was driving me 
nuts!
With this patch, will it also work with a newer version of Firefox?

I believe that browser.close is still supported in Watir v1.9.2 or
later,
 while browser.quit was deprecated awhile ago.

I think SafariWatir still has a quite method.
