Thanks all for showing keen interest. As rightly said by FK; we cant
automate by using WATIR alone for the environments discussed above.
The client has provided me direct environment to work with and hence
for me; this issue is resolved.

Thanks again.

  Hi,

I am trying to automate a web application built on sharepoint
  technology.

But, the application is available only on client network and hence I
am not having access to the application on my local intranet.

For accessing the application following steps are performed:

  1. Login to remote network by using Citrix server.
  2. Open the IE from the list of given applications.
  3. Open the URL of AUT.

Can someone please tell me whether WATIR supports automation of
application which are running on remote network.

NOTE: I am not logging into remote network using remote desktop or by
  accessing a remote machine.

  THanks in advance.

[wtr-general] Re: automating application running on remote network

2009-06-09 Thread Rahul Ahuja

Yes.
Steps to connect to application:
1. Login using citrix server
e.g. https://citrixremoteserver.com
2. Choose Internet Explorer from the list of applications (WORD,
EXCEL, POWERPOINT etc) displayed on the https://citrixremoteserver.com
browser
3. On the Internet Explorer browser opened; open the application by
typing in the URL.
e.g. http://www.application-under-test.com/

Client is using IE 6 where as IE7 is installed on my machine. Which
suggests that application is being accessed remotely where as what I
understand WATIR runs as an interface between the browser (local) and
application. So, its difficult to automate the application when we are
accessing it remotely.

Please suggest if there is some workaround for it.

Can you send a screen shot or a link to real site so I could take a look? I
really do not understand what is going on. You have IE7 open and you see IE6
inside it? What technology is it using to do that (ActiveX, Java...)?

[wtr-general] Re: automating application running on remote network

2009-06-09 Thread Chuck van der Linden

It sounds like you are doing a remote desktop type of connection.

In that case Ruby, Watir, etc would need to be installed on the remote
system. Perhaps they can give you a special desktop (tied to a
particular login) which had those things installed.

Automating anything 'through' remote desktop (e.g. automation running
on the local machine, and not the remote system) is a pretty tricky
business, since the remote desktop is a little bit different.. Most
of the remote desktop clients are built on Terminal Server or
something very similar (citrix started out as a 'thin client' company
specializing in that kind of thing).. So what's running on the local
PC is pretty much akin to a GUI Terminal of sorts.. all the actual
code execution takes place on he remote system. That means your
system can see at a 'visual' level the browser UI, but doesn't have
access to internals like the DOM.

Automation might be possible via auto-it but without testing I could
not tell you for sure. And even if it was possible, you'd likely be
restricted to using x,y coordinates to click on things, which can
result in very brittle scripts that require a lot of maintance.

Your other option would be to talk to them and see if a VPN option is
available.. If you could connect to the AUT via VPN, then the browser
would be running on your test system, and ruby/watir/etc would have
full access to the broswer DOM and you would be able to do the
automation (although you might need to install IE6 if that's what they
are using, to get the truest test of how the system behaves)

Tip: use Snag-it. trial install is available and the license is
cheap for the tremdeous utility it offers in doing screen captures and
