I would say that the reason Gilligan and the Skipper are connected to Mayberry is this: Bob Denver (Gilligan) played Dud Wash in the episode where Charlene divorced him and Barney had to ride the white horse from east to west. Alan Hale Jr. (Skipper) played Jeff Pruitt in the episode where he comes to town looking for a wife and tries to take Thelma Lou from Barney.
