A recent post mentioned Joel Redlin in his role as Ferdie in "A Singer Comes
to Town". I was at a church dinner tonight and a friend from our church who
was there went through high school with Joel Redlin. They graduated the
same year. My friend talks about how funny Joel was and he always liked to
act up and be funny when he was in school. He attended class reunions over
the years. In fact the last reunion would have been his 60th I believe and
when my friend sent Joel his invitation she received a letter from Joel's
wife saying that he had just recently passed away. She put an obituary in
our local paper along with Joel's picture and mentioned that he made an
appearance on the Andy Griffith Show. I showed that scene with Ferdie one
night when I had a Mayberry bible study and my friend was in attendance.
She enjoyed seeing Ferdie as she hadn't ever seen that particular episode.
So she was able to share some antidotes about him.
Another quick story. Last week Linda and I were at a housewarming party for
a friend who recently moved into a large old house. While visiting with
various folks the host mentioned that I had written a book about Mayberry so
he passed his copy around. One of the guests then told the story of how
when he worked at the airport in LA Don Knotts came up to him to rent a car.
He had just gotten finished with a shooting for one of his films and had a
lot of make up on. The fellow said how friendly Don was and how down to
earth and humble he appeared. Then another guy at the party mentioned that
he had lived in LA during the days of Mayberry filming and he lived in the
house right next to Francis Bavier. Now I have no reason to doubt these
stories, but I tell you if someone would have stood up and said that one
time he was driving through LA and he stopped for gas and Goober pumped the
gas, then I would strongly have suspected that I was being set up. It is
just so great to be able to share stories and laughter where ever I go and
it is all because of good old Mayberry NC and all the wonderful people who
live there.
