Ken I don't know how Andy's house was paid for, but he didn't inherit it. In the episode you mention, when Barney tried to get Andy to sell the house, he told Opie that when he bought the house, the ceiling had just been painted to hide the crack.
I do like everyone's speculation about things never revealed. I always thought it would be interesting to know how/why Andy stopped seeing his earlier girlfriends.
