Gary Cooper did this in Sergeant York (1941) I always figured that's where it came from. A guy like Goober would defiantly imitate Gary Cooper.... shoot he could walk like Chester, talk like Edward G Robinson and imitate Cary Grant he might as well shoot like Gary Cooper.
