What many fans fail to realize (or don't want to accept) is the buildings on
the 40 Acres backlot which served as downtown Mayberry were, for the most
part, not buildings at all, but just facades and empty shells. Many had no
roofs or back walls. Some were nothing but ONE wall. Only the outdoor
The Tara set was not small; it was 22 feet tall and over 100 feet
wide. It was not demolished, it was sold to Atlanta businessmen in
1959, taken apart and moved to Atlanta where it has remained in
several different storage locations under several owners.

I don't know how anyone could be trying to save Tara, as that small building
was demolished fifty years ago. It had deteriorated so badly that the only
piece that survived was the front door, which as I understand it has been in a
