The real first spin off of a TV show happened on the Price is Right back
when they added that Big Wheel. Ever since then they have a spin off twice
a show :)

show with a spin-off may have been December Bride, starring
Spring Byington and Co-starring Harry Morgan who was her neighbor Pete
Porter..Morgan was given the starring role in Pete and Gladys in 1960...
All In The Family leads the way with the most spin-offs, with Maude, The
Jeffersons, Gloria
I hate to disagree with wikipedia but in the introduction episode of tags
Danny Thomas gets stopped by Andy in Mayberry for not stopping for a stop sign
where there was no road. I would think that Andy could be considered a
supporting actor in this episode which was aired as part of the Make
You know it is either December Bride or someting else where the character Riley
retired. The show was Life of Riley. It was on the 50s. Riley retired and
every time Riley went to get in the backyard hammock, something would happen.

I was just thinking about how Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. was a spinoff of TAGS and
wondering if anybody out there knows if this was the first time a spinoff of a
sitcom was made.
If it wasn't does anyone know what was?

Back in the late 50s, Spring Byington starred in December Bride. One of the
supporting characters was named Pete Porter (played by Harry Morgan) who had
an unseen wife named Gladys.
In 1960, shortly after December Bride ended first run production, Pete and
Gladys premiered with Harry Morgan and
The Andy Griffith show was actually a spin off of the Danny Thomas Show. The
Andy Griffith Show was the first real spin-off for network television,
originating in a 1960 episode of The Danny Thomas Show.

It is my understanding that TAGS was the first (and most successful) TV spin

The very first, absoutely first spin off of one comedy show to another was when
The Great Gildersleeve left the Fibber McGee and Molly Show and started his own
show. But that was radio, and I know most people do not follow old time radio
the way I do. I guess you could technically say that
