Barney smoked a cigar when he found the money in the suitcase as he was trying to be Mr. Big and catch the attention of the thief.
When Andy went to arrest the newspaper publisher in Raleigh, he took a cigar for Barney saying that Barney liked to smoke one once in a while. Also, a while back it was brought up about Thelma Lou going to church. In the episode where Barney and Thelma Lou had a big fight about not going anywhere, Barney mentioned to Andy that he took Thelma Lou to church every Sunday. In "Family Visit" Andy mentioned that they went to the early service at church, so perhaps Barney and Thelma Lou went to the later service on most Sundays, so that is why we didn't see her.
