Curt, I believe you misread the wiki information. Andy Griffith and Ron Howard did indeed guest star in the GOMER PYLE USMC episode Opie Joins the Marines (2nd season)... Opie runs away from home after a failing grade, and shows up in Gomer's barracks at Camp Henderson, hoping to join the Marines and make his Pa proud of him again. After some unexpected help from Sgt. Marines Hymn
I have the privilege of playing in a community band. It is made up of people of all ages who enjoy getting together to play their instruments. Anyhow, we are preparing some music for a concert we will perform on Memorial Day. One of the songs includes a portion of the Marines Hymn. Every time we play that portion of the Marines Hymn, it's all I can do keep from laughing. I always think of Gomer marching into the courthouse and singing that song to Andy. To Mike Haviland, Don't sign up under the buddy system. My son and his best friend went in about 10 years ago and tried to do that. Luckily the recruiter discouraged them. He told them they could go in at the same time and train at the same place but if they officially went in under the buddy system the drill instructor would make them hold hands for 12 weeks. Marines Hymn
The school where I work part time is hosting an assembly tomorrow for area Veterans. The high school band and choir will be performing patriotic selections as a part of the assembly. I was rehearsing with the high school choir yesterday and a portion of one of the songs they are singing includes a part of the Marines Hymn. When I am at school working with the students, I take my job very seriously. However, as they started singing the words of the Marines Hymn, my mind immediately wandered to TAGS and the episode where Gomer marches into the courthouse singing the Marines Hymn to Andy. I couldn't help but smile. Later, I explained to the choir director the reason for my smile and she too thought it was funny.
