Eric this issue has been discussed at length at various times on the Digest and
it is an interesting thing to ponder...Janet Anderson

We all agree i think that things did change from the B&W episodes to the color
and we all have our thoughts as to why. I agree with janet
in that most of the B&W writers were absent during the color episodes. another
factor would be that a lot of the B&W episode writers wrote
several scripts and some even wrote several together so the comedy flowed much
better. Then in the color episodes most writers only wrote
one script. There were about 50 writers all together and most of them seldom if
ever met another writer..So unless they followed the show
they wouldn't have the knowledge of how to blend their writing with others. I
think this explains the many controversies we find in the show
such as where Raleigh was and how long it took to get there and how far it was
from Mayberry and etc. From what i understand a writer
would submit a plot or idea and a meeting was held by the producers and
directors with the writer(s) to discuss the idea. Once it was accepted
Andy and a few of the cast would get involved and carry the idea further...I'm
not swearing this is absolute but it's my take and offering to the discussion.
