It was a quiet but eerie Halloween night in Mayberry. The kids were all
home from trick or treating and Barney was on patrol. He stopped and
walked down deserted Main Street and checked the doors for all the
merchants. He only had an hour left before he could go home for the night.

However, when he got back to the courthouse, the phone rang and a caller
told Barney that he saw some strange lights by the cemetery. Thinking it
was probably some kids up to some mischief, Barney decided to check it out
before going home.

Now Barney did not like cemeteries. Like most things, it really made him
nervous. So he put his bullet in his revolver and slowly started walking
through the cemetery. It was so dark that he could not see a thing.
Suddenly without warning Barney fell into a giant hole and was knocked out
cold.

When Barney finally came to, he realized that he had fallen into an open
grave. He remembered that Old Man McGruder had passed away that week and
his funeral was set for the day after Halloween.

Barney was still dazed from the knock on his head when he fell into the
grave. He was trying to decide how he would get out of the grave. He
decided the best thing to do was to just wait until the people for the
funeral showed up. So he sat down and began the long wait. Within a few
minutes he was fast asleep.

When Barney finally woke up he saw a coffin above him and it was slowly
being lowered into the grave. He began to shout, but he had no voice. The
cold damp night air had settled into his throat and his uvula must have
been infected.

The coffin continued to slowly lower into the grave and Barney knew if he
didn’t do something soon; the coffin would crush him into the ground. Just
as the coffin was about to hit him, Barney knew what he had to do.

He reached into his pocket, grabbed a cough drop, put it into his mouth,
and sure enough, it stopped the coffin.
