Mayberry Events in Wisconsin
Mayberry is alive and well here in Wisconsin. To date we have done 47 car shows, parades, and presentations this summer. Lots more on the calendar in the coming months. Neighboring city police department contacted me to be part of their National Night Out on August 7. They are expecting around 1000 people to attend so I will be busy that night. The International Train Show that I participated in had 5000 visitors the day I was there, so that really kept me busy and was so much fun. Squad car needs to go in have a little body work done as some dumbbell backed into his other classic car. Well folks, my Mayberry season has begun in earnest. I did two back to back presentations this past Tuesday and we have four car shows this week. It is so good to be out and about sharing my love for TAGS. At the car show tonight a little girl about 4 years old came to visit me. She and her mom always look at the car and she gets a badge, but tonight she was with grandma. Grandma told me that last week she was stopped for speeding. Her little granddaughter was with her. When the officer started to talk to grandma, the little girl shouted out, "You are not my friend. Where is my friend?" She thought the police officer would be me. Grandma said during the entire time the police officer was talking, the little girl kept saying, "You are not my friend." Tonight was our 85th event since May 1 and we have five more this week. I am doing two presentations plus two parades and four car shows this week. Just when I think things will slow down we get a few more calls. At tonight's car show the venue had a professional photographer who would take pictures if you wanted them. They had arranged for him to take 10 proofs of our two cars and he is going to make it into an 18 x 20 metal photo and give it to me as a gift for helping promote all their shows. I had a great time at our biennial All School Reunion back home. I was asked to be the keynote speaker and give my Mayberry Presentation. There were 185 of us there and their were folks there from graduation classes of 1941 up to 1965 when our high school closed. I received so many positive comments about my presentation and so many people shared stories about how much they still enjoy watching TAGS. It was a very emotional packed evening. The next day we did a parade at a Sturgeon Festival. While walking the parade route with the squad car, a vendor walked up to me and handed me a really cool toy machine gun. It has all kinds of lights that light up and great sounds when you pull the trigger. He said because I only carry one bullet he thought I needed another weapon. It was mine to keep. This week we have three car shows and two more parades. Going back home for the second weekend in a row to be in a Spanish Fall Festival Parade. Most of the people there will be Mexicans who work in a very large Abbyland Meat Processing Plant. Not sure if they will understand my role, but the city fathers called me and asked me to come. I probably won't issue too many citations as they think they are real. A friend called me today and told me they were traveling through Illinois this week and they were listening to satellite radio when suddenly they heard the show host say something about Ken Anderson, the Mayberry Guru. Don't have a clue what that was about. Life is very busy here in Eau Claire. We continue to do many events as The Mayberry Guru. Sunday we were a part of a HOVER Fest which stands for Honoring Our Veterans with Enthusiastic Respect. It is an annual event where we raise money for veterans to take the Honor Flights. My role is to arrest people and handcuff them and then bring them up on stage with the radio personality to announce what they did and what their bail is. Always a lot of fun. Lots of kids there too and i have special citations for them. We have done 27 events already this summer. We have 13 to attend in the next two weeks including two of my presentations at area locations. We have 62 events scheduled through September so still a lot to do. I never dreamed that I would find something in my retirement that would give me so much pleasure and that it would allow me to bring so much pleasure to others. My wife still works full time and gets up at 4 a,m. every day but she still manages to attend every single event with me. But the good news is she is retiring in February. We're making plans to attend the Mayberry Events in Westminster, SC in April, (about 2 hrs. from home) then there's Mayberry Nights in Troy, NC, in August (another 2 hrs. from home) leading up to Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy, NC in September (again, another 2 hrs.) Also, the daily digest and weekly podcasts keep my Mayberry fix in control. Does this mean I'm a Mayberryoholic?
