college girl, who actually went to Mayberry to dig up dirt on Andy,
because of a summons he gave the newspaper owner, when all was said

smoking and guns

2014-10-20 Thread Victor Friskey
On the subject of Andy smoking I never could figure why he carried cigarettes
loosein his shirt pocket and not in a pack...He never took more than two or
three puffs off one and was careless with his smoking. Once he smoked in
bed...and another time  he crushed a cigarette out on his porch...I'd get upset
if someone did that on my porch. On another note I now have 5 cable outlets that
show TAGS and one that shows Mayberry RFD...I never realized it before but
RFD just isn't very funny...I've watchedseveral episodes and seldom see a
reason to even smile much less laugh...But then that's just proof you can't
improve on Andy and Barney..another thing I noticed was inone episode Goober
said he was a deputy...wonder why they had a deputy and no sheriff.Today I
watched the one where ex-con Brooks came back to Mayberry to get even
withBarney...When Andy climbed up a tree to get a better look for Brooks,
Barney climbed upto...But both of them left loaded guns at the base of the
tree..pretty careless sheriffing I'd say.

Speaking of smoking, even though Barney very seldom smoked on the show, Don
Knotts must have been quite the smoker in real life. I have the Don Knotts
autobiography, and nowhere in it does Don mention that he has the smoking
habit, but if you watch the TAGS episode where Gomer takes Barney's place in
the choir, you will see it. Near the end of the episode, Gomer and John
Masters are at the front of the hall rehearsing, and unknown to them Barney is
in the rear listening. After they leave, Barney gets up and walks to the
front of the hall. You can clearly see the outline of a pack of cigarettes in
his shirt pocket. I remember there was at least one other episode where
Barney was carrying a pack of cigarettes around, but I forget which one. So,
as I say, Don Knotts must have had the smoking habit to carry cigarettes around
when the script did not call for him to smoke.I remember reading somewhere
that Andy was also a smoker for several years until health reasons forced h

Smoking was one negative about Andy. Of course it was much more common
then. It is weird now to watch those old shows and see so many actors
smoking. It occurred on almost every show such as TAGS, Dick Van Dyke
and Lucy to name a few. Andy smoked in different places- on the porch,
in bed ( bad Andy!), at the court house and at Quiet Sam's house after
he delivered the baby. Barney smoked a cigar. Otis, Mr Goss and man in
a hurry all smoked as well

.
While on the subject of smoking, on what episode was there a reference
to marijuana? I know that is probably an easy one for many TAGS fans,
but is kind of curious that such a reference would have been made on the
show.

Here is another unrelated trivia question. What actor, who later became
famous on Laugh In, appeared on one episode of TAGS?

Andy is actually seen smoking a cigarette in about a dozen episodes. In Gomer
the House Guest, he actually smokes in bed! A lawman ought to know better.

Otis is seen smoking a cigarette only one time; if memory serves it is when he
tells Andy about Fred Goss sweet-talking Aunt Bee.

As has been pointed out, in the 1950s and 1960s it was quite common to see
people smoking on TV. The warnings on cigarette packs started appearing around
1966; after that it was much less common. Andy Griffith himself quit smoking
around that time, which naturally meant that Andy Taylor wasn't seen smoking on
screen anymore either.

Barney Smoking and Thelma Lou

2012-09-06 Thread Ken Anderson
Barney smoked a cigar when he found the money in the suitcase as he was
trying to be Mr. Big and catch the attention of the thief.

When Andy went to arrest the newspaper publisher in Raleigh, he took a
cigar for Barney saying that Barney liked to smoke one once in a while.

Also, a while back it was brought up about Thelma Lou going to church. In
the episode where Barney and Thelma Lou had a big fight about not going
anywhere, Barney mentioned to Andy that he took Thelma Lou to church every
Sunday. In Family Visit Andy mentioned that they went to the early
service at church, so perhaps Barney and Thelma Lou went to the later
service on most Sundays, so that is why we didn't see her. Or else, she may
have been sitting behind Mr. Schwamp, and his hair blocked our view of her.

andy's smoking

2010-06-16 Thread Timothy-Lindsey Ralston
Watched Bookie Barber episode last night and got me thinking.
In this episode Andy is seen smoking for 2 seconds, taking a drag as he exits
courthouse
and then throwing the cigarette on the ground.
In about 13 episodes we see Andy smoking briefly.
Out of 8 seasons, that is a low number of episodes.
I wonder why the producers decided to show Andy smoking in these few episodes?
If he smoked all the time I would say it was part of the character,
but it is so infrequent that it makes me wonder why it was put in.
Seems that Andy's character would have either been a big smoker or not at all.
Is there a purpose behind the producers choosing to show this occasionally?

I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about this as we discussed it in the

Prisoner of Love smoked and blew the smoke right in Barney's face.
Barney smoked while in jail and also smoked a cigar when he was feeling

Freddie Fleet smoked when he was talking to Andy in the courthouse.
Mr. McBeevey smoked and made smoke come out of his ears.
Colonel Harvey smoked a cigar and made smoke signals.
Fred Goss smoked and dropped ashes all over Otis's clean suit.
Andy smoked numerous times, even in bed. ( Don't think he smoked in color

Citizen of the Day Mr. Mooney smoked at the end of the episode.
One of the Darlings always had a pipe going.
Otis Campbell smoked when he told Andy about Aunt Bee and Fred Goss
Gentleman Dan smoked cigars from Tampa
Roger Hanover borrowed money from Andy so he could go get cigars though I
don't think we saw him smoke.

Several members of the Esquire club smoked.
Several men at Opie's Saturday gathering at Oakwood Hills smoked.
Escaped prisoner's girlfriend smoked as she went back into the trailer to
get her cigarettes.
Daphne's boyfriend who punched Andy was smoking when he came into the truck
stop
One of the crooks who held Andy and Howard hostage smoked while keeping
watch at the window.

The courthouse furnace really smoked when Newton Monroe tried to clean it.

TAGS and Smoking

2010-04-23 Thread weenie man

How many people can you remember on TAGS besides Andy that were shown smoking?
I know Barney did a couple of times for comic effect, but I am talking about
'real' smoking.

It's preying on my mind.

Although he was only in one episode (Don't Miss A Good Bet), I seem to
remember the con man George Jones seriously smoking a cigarette as he waited
for the train to get him out of Mayberry.

smoking

2008-05-06 Thread Paul Mulik
Andy smokes on-screen in about a dozen episodes. In Gomer the House Guest he
even smokes in bed! Seems like he would have known better. All of this was in
the days before the surgeon general's warnings -- once the dangers of tobacco
use became better understood, Andy stopped smoking on The Show, and in real
life too. Years later, he publicly stated that he regretted smoking on camera
in the early days.

Barney does smoke occasionally -- see Mayberry on Record (cigar), Citizen's
Arrest (cigarette - what's the matter, is the smokin' lamp out or something?),
If I Had a Quarter-Million (cigars again - 35 cents a copy) and A Black Day
for Mayberry (a pipe - though it didn't appear to be lit).

Paul Mulik

I remember twice - once when Goober was a houseguest ( amazing that?Aunt Bee
allowed him to keep an ashtray under his bed! )?and once right after Andy
delivered Sam Becker's baby - funny he also commented on how good the air
smelled after the rain.

Barn never lit up - even if he was tempted, he'd never spend the money! Besides
he needs it to keep up his reputation as a big tipper at the diner.

Please have patience with me. Last week I asked a question of all our experts
out there about how many times Andy was seen smoking on the show. Well just
after I sent out the question, I stopped getting the digest. I have now started
getting it again, ( thanks), but unfortunatly I missed all the replies with the
answers! Please repeat those for me if you have the time. This kind of stuff
happens to me all the time.. I wonder what causes that ? Thanks, Butch.

There was a question about how many times Andy lit up
a cigarette and I couldn't say but there is something
I noticed when Andy lit up - there was never any more
than 2 puffs taken when the cigarette was put out.
Guess he didn't have to worry too much about the
hazards of smoking.
Best to you and yours,
Barb

Andy smoking

2008-04-15 Thread ruf
I need help from all the TN's ( Trained Noticers) out there. I had the question
posed to me about how many times Andy was seen smoking on the show. I know this
has been discussed before, but my memory is shorter than Goober's first date
with Lydia. So I'm hoping someone else will re-member the number of times.
Being the local TAGS nut around here, everyone expects me to have an answer
right off the top of my head. I'm sure most of you know the feeling. There is
so much pressure being a fanatic, I may just find a cave and hermitize myself.
So I don't have to live with possums and raccoons, please help me. Thanks,
Butch from Casey, IL.

Re: Smoking

2007-12-02 Thread Allan Newsome
How many episodes does anyone recall seeing Andy smoking a cigarette?

From The Mayberry FAQ: (Please visit for all kinds of good information.)

http://www.tagsrwc.com/faq/

Q. How many times was Andy Taylor seen smoking on TAGS?

A:
Well, off the top of my head, I can think of a few episodes in which
Andy is seen smoking a cigarette:

Quiet Sam
Jailbreak
Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee
Three's a Crowd
The Bookie Barber
Mr. McBeevee
Opie's Rival
High Noon in Mayberry
The Great Filling Station Robbery
Prisoner of Love
Cousin Virgil - (backroom of the jail smoking, patiently waiting for
Virgil to get Otis out of the cell!)/added by Jason Brown/
The Clubmen - (At the very beginning, Andy is seen with a cigarette as
he and Roger Courtney pull up to the courthouse after fishing.)/added by
Jason Brown/
Gomer the House Guest - (in this one he smokes IN BED -- shocking!)

That makes 13, unless we've missed one.

BTW, I think it's worth mentioning that this was before the dangers of
cigarette smoking were widely known. In those days Andy Griffith smoked
in real life, but when the surgeon general came out with the cancer
warnings in the mid 1960s, he quit smoking (good for him!) -Paul Mulik

Andy smoking and sich other things

2007-10-28 Thread weenie man

Yes, pretty sure Andy and Don and probably most of them smoked back then. Also
have read that Andy and some of the others were pretty good drinkers in their
time. ( Never have heard that about Don though. ) It was a tv show and they
weren't perfect.

Yes, Aunt Bee and Andy didn't get along well in real life. More her aloofness
than anything else I think.

Would be interested to know if Mr. Schwamp has been seen in any other shows.
Good question from yesteday.

Andy's Smoking and Aunt Bee's Dissin'

2007-10-28 Thread MeInMayberry

ihey, I wondered if Andy Griffith really smoked? I saw him smoking on TAGS
about 11 times. Could someone tell me? Also therte a rumor I heard that Andy
And Francies Bavier did not get along. True or not? I gueuss rumors spread
fast in Mayberry. Anyone else heard about this?/i

b Yes, Andy really smoked, and what I read is that he gave it upi (at
least on air--some photos suggest otherwise)/i after the Surgeon General's
warnings appeared in the early 60's. I've also read that Frances Bavier
didn't
get along with Andy, or anyone else for that matter.
Years after TAGS, Andy Griffith and Ron Howard went to her house, but she
refused to meet with them. Before she died, however, she talked with Andy on
the phone and sort of patched things up.
Did I get the story right? /b
