found saving as a .png makes for much clearer results after resizing. I

have done. What is the easiest way to create these? I heard of a tool that
will help do this but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Might want to have a look at: http://jalbum.net/ makes creating thumbs a
snap and it's free. Even creates the pages for you but you don't have to
use the pages if you don't want to. You can use just the images in your
own template if you prefer.
