How many of you have received "domain expiration notices" from Domain
Registry of America?

I received an email from a client today where they didn't know what to do
with a notice that said their domain transfer was unable to be completed
without contacting their current registrar to release the domain name for
transfer.

Seems the company "Domain Registry of America" had sent a letter to them and
a secretary thinking that she was renewing the domain filled in the form and
sent it back. Now this domain doesn't expire until Aug 2004 so there is no
need to renew right now (we just renewed it 2 months ago) and she didn't
understand the fine print that said domain registration would be transferred
to "Domain Registry of America" so she didn't know what to do when she
received the email telling her that there was a problem transferring the
domain.

Domain Registry of America tells me that "only" the secretary who replied to
the letter is authorized to cancel the transfer. I told them it didn't
matter because there was a domain lock and I am the one authorized to
release it so they would never complete the transfer and if they billed for
the transfer I'd report them to the Attorney General for Deceptive Trade
Practices since the secretary is not listed anywhere on the domain info.
