HI
I have a customer that I built a network for, then maintained for several
months. I am still under contract to the company for a day a month
maintenance. The problem is they haven't paid me for a few months and no
amount of calls or e-mails gets more than a promise to raise a cheque. I

The only reason I answer is to try and prevent you from doing something that
would get you jailed (in the States, at least).
Unless one of the provisions of your contract allows you to disable network
access for non-payment (unlikely) then this is illegal and
Hi Nick,
Interesting problem :-)
I have the capability to VPN in to the server and lock all the users out,
in the perhaps misguided assumption that this would expedite payment.
I'd guess this won't help your chances of eventually receiving anything, and
as you say it may well land you in

That clears it up for me. It's illegal.
My curiosity and train of thought was brought about by my main job as a
developer. If I write software for someone and they don't pay, copyright
isn't transferred and I am within my rights to insist that they discontinue
use of the software.

I agree with J.R. While it sounds like this would give you the upper leg,
they surely won't send you payments in jail. My first suggestion would be
to send them a CERTIFIED letter (so you have receipt that they got it)

Nick,
You've had good advice; I would just add an extra little comment. I
cannot imagine that your contract says you must carry on working if you are

very hard before calling in lawyers.

I don't know how it works over in the UK but the State Bar (attorney
licensing) has a place where you can file complaints for unethical
behavior by attorneys. You might check with whoever licenses solicitors in
the UK and see if you have the option to file a complaint there as well.

Then it must have been put there by an extensions. I looked through my
installed extensions list and believe that the SyncMarks extension is the
one that installed the option to import from IE.
I got it either at the Firefox extension site
Nick,
It also occurred to me - and I suggest something like this for anyone who
hits such a problem - that when writing to the hirer of your services you
should also make clear that, if they wish to continue to use your services
the contract will be ammended (that's 'will be' not may be) and that
