Re: [webkit-dev] Disallowing modal dialogs during unload events

Side note: when I see a dialog upon leaving a webpage, it is almost always
the beforeunload dialog. I'm not sure I have ever seen a regular alert,
prompt, confirm, or showModalDialog when leaving the page. This is part of
why I'd like to see data. Would we be solving a real problem with this
change, or just a theoretical one?

In addition to the theoretical user benefit, I've been such a strong
proponent of this change because it would greatly simplify some of
Chromium's cross-process communication during tab/browser close. So, as long
as it doesn't hurt existing, legitimate sites, I'd still like to see this
happen.

I'm happy with the resolution of trying this out in Chromium and getting
some statistics about how often we hit this in the real world.

[webkit-dev] Dropping support for WML?

2011-04-08 Thread Ryosuke Niwa
Greetings all,

We have been discussing the possibility of dropping WML support in WebKit on
IRC for a while now because

   1. None of core ports (Mac, Windows, GTK, Qt, Chromium) use it by
   default
   2. Maintenance cost is high

I know Samsung is using the feature but they're not sure if they'll be
supporting it in the future. Are there are other folks who are actively
using WML?

Best regards.

If you search in the ChangeLogs, you'll see that we still get bug fixes and
 build fixes for WML.

As far as I checked, much of changes in WML are due to changes in Core DOM
and other parts of WebCore. See
http://trac.webkit.org/log/trunk/Source/WebCore/wml

But it seems it is not the case for WML yet. Also, I am unsure if None of
the core ports use it by defautl is a strong argument here.

Do you use WML? I'm simply interested in statistics not arguments for or
against the idea of dropping the feature because we're most likely going to
talk about this at the contributor's meeting.

[webkit-dev] Why I won’t be reviewing patches as much the next two weeks

2011-04-08 Thread Darin Adler
I’ll be on vacation and mostly away from my email and computers for two weeks
starting tomorrow. I wanted to mention this to the WebKit community so you
understand why I’m not doing patch review for a while!

I’ll just add one other thing: HTML form element implementations have factoring
that are twisted and complicated because of WML in a way that makes working on
those classes unpleasant for me. It would make form work considerably easier if
we drop WML support.

This is possibly the main practical argument for dropping it. I totally agree.

I realized that I pushed us off topic a little and wanted to remind everyone of
the real point of this thread. Ryosuke specifically said he wants to get the
data about who is using WML. So please do reply if you have any information
about this.

[webkit-dev] mac-ews and cr-mac-ews

2011-04-08 Thread Eric Seidel
Unfortunately the project's patch submission rate has grown such that
the mac-ews and cr-mac-ews are currently over capacity.

I'm working on ordering more hardware. But until then, it may take a
while (hours instead of minutes) for patches to show green/red on the
mac-ews and cr-mac-ews bubbles.

As I mentioned previously, if anyone has spare hardware lying around,
and wants to run their own EWS, it's as simple as:
webkit-patch mac-ews
from any checkout. It will prompt you to make sure your'e OK with
throwing away all changes in that checkout.

We have a nice wrapper script if you plan to leave it long running:
./Tools/EWSTools/start-queue.sh cr-mac-ews eseidel-mac2
(but if you're going to do that, you need to set up your paths in a
specific way, which is slightly annoying.)

I'll update webkit-dev when I've gotten the mac/cr-mac EWSes back
under capacity. That may be a few weeks, sorry.
