All looks generally fine to me. I have some tweaks to make, but I'll check
them on Windows as I make them.
The thing that bothers me is removing the socket shutdown call. The
appserver is supposed to need that. I 'm not sure why it caused problems on
Windows. I'll look into it.

I just checked in some fixes that make this compile cleanly and work
properly on Windows. You might want to check that it still works on Unix.
