This looks like exactly what I wanted, thanks. I'm going to have a
look at how much work this will be to integrate with WW and if I can't
do that I'll have a go at making it talk to our Versant object
database.

The obvious answers might be to generate PDF using Apache FOP or iText.
The less obvious:

output the Excel MIME
We actually need proper report printing with pagination and repeating
headings etc. HTML would be nice but I don't think it has the features
we need and the printing is not quite what we want.
