thanks for your prompt reply.

Yes I m using raspbian and a couple days ago I upgraded from Wheezy to 
Jessie. During that procedure I mistakenly removed various packages which 
caused a lot of problems in various services running on my raspberry. 

just installed the fonts package and I think it will be OK now.
