The most common arrangement is to specify one router to serve as the router for forwarding packets from a group of hosts on a LAN. If that router fails, however, there is no way to use another router as a backup. Using VRRP, a virtual IP address can be specified manually or with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) as a default. A virtual IP address is shared among the routers, with one designated as the master router and the others as backups. In case the master fails, the virtual IP address is mapped to a backup router's IP address. (This backup becomes the master router.) VRRP can also be used for load balancing. VRRP is part of both IPv4 (the version of IP that most networks currently use) and IPv6. ______________________ RELATED TERMS: router http://searchsmallbizit.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid44_gci212924,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486645 local area network http://searchsmallbizit.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid44_gci212495,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486645 packet http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci212736,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486645 host http://searchsmallbizit.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid44_gci212254,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486645 DHCP http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid7_gci213894,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486645 IPv6 http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci212389,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486645 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: SearchNetworking.com provides more information. http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/bestWebLinks/0,289521,sid7_tax286412,00.html?track=NL-34&ad=486645 _____________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: TALK IS CHEAP (BUT HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) FOR LEADING IT WORKERS The recession didn't exactly do wonders for the CIO's relationship with IT workers.
