[Bug 26571] New: WikiEditor: Allow tooltips for characters

2011-01-05 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26571

Summary: WikiEditor: Allow tooltips for characters
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any

Status: NEW

It would be nice if characters could show a tooltip like the buttons. Now you
can't see a real difference between – and −, so a tooltip telling you that the
first one is an en-dash and the second a minus would be helpful.

Actually it's possible to add a tooltip via

'characters': [ [span style='padding:0px; margin:0px; border:0px;'
title='tooltip'character/span, character] ]

but this is really messy.

[Bug 26566] DynamicPageList uses an unknown ordering method

2011-01-05 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #2 from Bawolff bawolff...@gmail.com 2011-01-05 11:19:36 UTC ---

DynamicPageList can be configured to use different order methods. The default
is the date the category was added (or changed) to the article.

Thus, blanking the article and then reverting will make it pop back to the top
of the list. Changing the sortkey of a category will also make it pop back to
the top (via {{DEFAULTSORTKEY:...}} or [[category:Foo|bar]] syntax). Overly
long article titles can sometimes cause issues as well (bug 25254).

However in this case, the issue appears to be related to bug 25254. This bug is
for pages with long titles, they get moved to the front of the DPL list any
time they are edited (including null edits).

The weird part is, that the sortkeys don't seem to be getting cut off according
to the api, which was my old theory for what was causing bug 25254. Need to
investigate further

As a work around, when publishing the article, try to specify a sortkey using
{{DEFAULTSORT:}} that is 70 characters or less. (things like cx = ĉ count as
two characters).

 2) If a wiki has a local page also with information (for example the

An Edit tab in the main navigation could be handy in cases, but what about
 case
 2) above ?

I think the edit link should only link to commons if the local page does not
exist. If the local page exists, then the edit link should be to the local one.

To address 3 (from the edit link point of view. I strongly feel we should still
keep people on the local wiki for the page view of the image), we could do
something like make the link have the editintro=from_foreign_wiki parameter, so
commons could have a note about you're not at home anymore.

Add 'upload' to $wgRestrictionTypes in DefaultSettings.php.

But this needs special handling for NS6 in a lot of functions like

the messages yet, at least the english messages should be entered. We can tell
the localizers to ignore the extension for now.

[Bug 26576] New: OpenStackManager extension needs proper security checks

2011-01-05 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26576

Summary: OpenStackManager extension needs proper security
checks
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: OpenStackManager
AssignedTo: rlan...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: rlan...@gmail.com

There's a few rudimentary security checks in place now, but the extension needs
to ensure users have proper rights to access certain special pages.

Specifically, Special:NovaProject, and Special:NovaDomain should ensure a user
is an admin, or have some special right.

Additionally, the current security checks aren't likely done in the normal
MediaWiki style. This should be corrected.

[Bug 26577] New: Add backend code and special page interfaces for managing Nova security groups

Nova provides a firewall per VM. The firewall policies are called security
groups. Security groups can be modified via the EC2 API.

The minimum level of support that we need for this is to be able to assign
pre-existing security groups to VMs. Ideally, we'll have an interface to
create, modify and delete security groups as well.

Though we already create DNS entries for instances when they are created, these
DNS entries may be for private subnet IP addresses (and in the WMF environment,
they will be). We need a way to separately create DNS entries. These should
somehow be linked to the way we assign public IP addresses, as we don't want
people accidentally assigning a DNS entry to IP addresses that we do not own.

Only one DNS object should be allowed per IP address. Additional DNS entries
for that IP address should be added to the same object, either through a
cnamerecord, or an additional associateddomain record.

[Bug 26579] New: Close usability.wikimedia.org to editing

ReportedBy: gpaum...@wikimedia.org

The usability wiki located at http://usability.wikimedia.org was used as the
main platform for the Wikipedia Usability Initiative and the Multimedia
Usability Project. Both this grand-funded projects are now over.

In retrospect, opening a brand new wiki may not have been the best solution,
and the WMF engineering teams are now using mediawiki.org as their main
collaboration platform, in order to be closer to the community of volunteer
developers.

Little content hosted on the usability wiki is still relevant to current
projects, and it can be imported to mediawiki.org on a per-page basis (see
comment below).

As a consequence, the Usability wiki should be closed to editing, and only kept
as an archive.

Thanks!

[Bug 26581] New: Add a special page interface for allocating, and unallocating elastic IP addresses

Nova have the concept of elastic IP addresses (similar to EC2). We should
expose an interface for users to allocate IP addresses.

More investigation on Nova needs to be done on this. We are aiming to have
private IP addresses assigned to VMs by default, and we'd like these elastic IP
addresses to be public IP addresses. Nova currently only supports one NIC per
VM, and one bridge per virtual host. Future plans for Nova include multi-NIC
per VM, and multi-bridge per virtual host.

We are likely to use NAT at first as a workaround, but I'd like to ensure we
can use better openstack features in the future for this.

The interface should be written with NAT in mind, but should be extendable to a
better option in the future.

A number of conditions aren't error checked at all. Occasionally timeouts to
the EC2 api throw uncaught exceptions that lead to stacktraces in MediaWiki.
Also, other conditions, such as bad replies or API failures simply go unchecked
resulting in incorrect display, or creation of LDAP objects when Nova objects
haven't been properly created.

All API errors should be checked, and proper error messages should be
displayed.

The extension is currently using the EC2 API with the AWS-SDK. This API works
for now, but the OpenStack API is likely to add features that can't be added to
the EC2 API, since the EC2 API is controlled by Amazon.

We should add support for the OpenStack API, and should default to using that.
We should handle this by using abstract classes for classes like
OpenStackNovaInstance and OpenStackNovaController.

Not really. The id attribute is now in a span nested inside the heading
element. Still no help in using CSS to style a particular heading.

For example, I can't use codeh2#References {}/code, or any other selector,
to style the text of an article's reference heading, because the #References ID
belongs to a meaningless span INSIDE the heading.

This is a symptom of [[wikt:divitis]] and classitis. Resolving this bug means
adopting best-practice semantic HTML. Reopening.

 do you really need to?

The point of semantic HTML is to simplify the code while giving a designer

Shouldn't take much to change wfGetIP() in ProxyTools.php to handle this.
However, it'd be nice to know what's generating these kinds of REMOTE_ADDRs and
why. In particular, if we get multiple IPs in REMOTE_ADDR, which one should we
use? The first? The last? Something else?

You should use the LAST technically, as under apache the FIRST is the

that ALSO returns two IPs... grrr

Specifically, if

  h2Foo/h2

gets translated to something involving

  h2 id=FooFoo/h2

then what do you suggest we do with

  h2 id=BarFoo/h2

as wikitext input? Currently, explicitly-specified h# is treated pretty much
the same as wikitext headings. One solution would be to make the h# contain
only the actual title, so instead of

  h2span class=editsection[a
href=/w/index.php?title=T-34amp;action=editamp;section=20 title=Edit
section: Referencesedit/a]/span span class=mw-headline
id=ReferencesReferences/span/h2

do

  div id=References class=mw-headlinespan class=editsection[a
href=/w/index.php?title=T-34amp;action=editamp;section=20 title=Edit
section: Referencesedit/a]/span h2References/h2/div

or something. But that would have to be deployed carefully to not break
existing content.

Dear All,

This is not actually a bug report, rather an enhancement request.

I think it would be useful to have short descriptions to appear when I move
over a link. Now I only see the link word itself. However, there could be the
first sentence from the link’s main page instead, to describe the definition,
so I wouldn’t have to go to the link to read it.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 16190] Relate section anchors to section headings in HTML

2011-01-05 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16190

--- Comment #7 from Michael Zajac mich...@zajac.ca 2011-01-05 19:45:19 UTC ---
@Happy-melon:

It looks like those were concerns with that implementation, not with resolving
this issue. r52963 didn't allow for a manually-typed ID to override a generated
one, but rather created a second ID attribute.

But even with the r52963 solution, if an editor NEEDS to add a second ID, why
not use an a or other element after the heading? (And if she needs to add a
third one, it must be done that way anyway.) I didn't see any evidence that an
editor actually needs to manually specify an ID, just the theoretical desire
not to change current behaviour.

The purpose of the heading ID is to identify the heading element, not just a
span of text.

@Aryeh Gregor:

Why not just change id=Foo to id=Bar in the rare case when an editor
specifies it? With the current situation, wikitext is inadequate and I'd have
to type HTML for every heading if I want my CSS or Javascript to access them.

A surrounding div or HTML5 section would be better still, but much more
complicated to implement. Even without it, HTML5 clearly defines the scope of a
section, based on the *headings*, so a CSS designer or Javascript can use this,
*if* the headings are identified.

Thanks for your enhacemente request (yes, this is the proper place).

That can be done with the popups gadget. I think that's a WONTFIX as a core
feature.

Popups is pure JS, though, right? Something like this could perhaps be useful
as an extension. Just a Simple Matter Of Programming it... :)

It should be using $wgImageMagickConvertCommand instead of hardcoded convert.

You still need javascript for it to work. And doing some pieces in php will
lead you to caching madness™. Making a generic javascript wrapper extension
could work, and seems a good idea, but that's a different feature.

Not necessarily, if you just used text-only tooltips. But I do agree, caching
would be an issue. Not in the sense that it'd be difficult -- just purge all
linking pages on every edit -- but in terms of performance. Still, some wikis
might consider the performance hit worth it. (And it's not like the JS popups
don't have performance issues of their own.)

This is a dupe of Bug 503, but it would be nice to bundle that piece of js as
an extension, with any wikimedia specific parts removed.

Should probably also use wfShellExec which will put an error in the debug log
if the executable file doesn't exist, as well as do other good things.

Or alternatively, having an optional version of the gadgets extensions that
bundles the really popular gadgets that are widely applicable (like popups)

As suggested in bug26587, it might be worthwhile to consider bundling Popups,
or at least a subset of it, as core JS or a maintained extension.
