The format was invented by German Wikipedians some years ago. It is used by libraries and institutional websites, mainly in the German-speaking world. As we try to convince the GLAM world to use this format, I think especially Wikidata with its wealth of authority data fields conncected to each other and to Wikimedia project websites should offer such BEACON files. Those BEACON files could be updated by a bot on a regular basis (e. g. weekly), and be hosted on some official Wikimedia server. Right now, the most important Wikidata BEACON file would probably be: GND - Wikidata ID (including all Wikidata items that have a GND identifier field, and only those). For this one we don't even need a resolver tool, since the Wikidata URL format already works as a valid link resolver. Others could be: GND - en.wikipedia GND - de.wikisource GND - Commons Category VIAF - en.wikipedia VIAF - Commons Category SUDOC - fr. wikipedia etc. etc. Also, BEACON files like Wikidata ID - wikimedia projects or even Wikidata ID - some external identifier could be useful. I think retrieving the necessary data should be very very simple (it's just the simplest SQL query), and the resolver tool with its 1:1 functionality doesn't seem to be rocket science either. First, the LESS compiler is initialized with the import directories from wgResourceLoaderLESSImportPaths and only in the course of compiling the file from the custom skin, the path of the custom skin is added to the importDirs variable of the LESS compiler. This behavior breaks the reasonable expectation of a skin developer that the included .less files are read from the skin directory. When I explored the first problem again, I realized that the most recent oldid for skwiki/Turie is 5596738, which is the same as the oldid of a 1 Sep 2004 version of enwiki/Alvin and the Chipmunks (the article shown to the users). The fact that the English article was edited at the same time was also most probably irrelevant and only a coincidence. As a precaution, I decided to switch my tool back to using http://parsoid.wmflabs.org/ because I never experienced this erroneous behavior with this instance. That leads me to believe that Parsoid sometimes redirects to the wrong full URI (e.g. /plwiki/Dolný Vadičov?oldid=5594681). Interestingly, http://parsoid-lb.eqiad.wikimedia.org/plwiki/Doln%C3%BD_Vadi%C4%8Dov?oldid=5594681 was in cache: X-Cache:cp1045 hit (1), cp1058 frontend miss (0) So somebody requested that page and version recently. Since that is a very old revision and the title is actually from skwiki it seem unlikely that this happened by chance. The oldid always wins over the title, which explains why the article with a different name is returned. A possible work-around is to pass in the oldid explicitly. The scroll happens in all overlays that request full-screen using the mobile-overlay code in MobileFrontend/javascripts/common/Overlay.js. There's a deliberate window.scrollTo(0,1) that does it, with the comment skip the URL bar if possible. On desktop this is pointless, but on mobile it does succeed in full-screening: in many mobile browsers, the URL-bar is shown iff the window is scrolled all the way to the top. So setting the scroll 1px down has the effect of hiding the URL-bar and giving the overlay fullscreen. Possibilities: 1. Is there a less hackish way of hiding the URL bar on mobile? 2. Avoid scrolling on desktop. A more general version of #2 is properly manage overlays on desktop. The current bridge in MobileFrontend/javascripts/desktop is rather minimal and doesn't *really* produce overlays that work well on desktop. I also disagree that having it enabled or disabled should be a global all or nothing thing. Different projects have different use cases - one that serves primarily users without compatibility issues, for instance, probably should have it off by default. On the other hand, ones that serve areas full of users who often have trouble with the exact things it's trying to address should have it on by default - but we can't assume that the defaults will ever suit everyone, or that there won't be overlap. We can, however, try to have sane defaults so that the most people will be happy just in general.
