What about using a BagOStuff as a write-through cache for the greatest revision
id on any *.css or *.js in the MediaWiki namespace? That way, sites employing
memcache would avoid the DB hit.

Edit timestamp or revision id for the page might work; check that it can be
done without extra DB queries.

Do you mean, the article being viewed, or the *.css/*.jss page?

ReportedBy: russb...@hotmail.com

Special pages that are updated by the updateSpecialPages.php cron jobs have not
been updated on any Wikimedia Foundation wikis since approximately 4 Feb 2009.
On 12 Feb, Brion posted on wikitech-l as follows:

Last week some of the background batch jobs were reorganized to run
under a less privileged user account, a good security practice.

Unfortunately the log files the batch jobs logged to didn't have their
ownership updated, so the batch jobs were unable to actually run, due to
being unable to open their output files. :P

I've fixed the file ownership; they should start updating in the next
day or two per regular schedule.

However, it has been 5 days since that posting, and the jobs are still not
running, so apparently there is some other problem.

[Bug 4488] Watch rollbacks

2009-02-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4488

--- Comment #7 from P.Copp paul.copper...@googlemail.com 2009-02-17 17:25:24
UTC ---
Created an attachment (id=5823)
-- (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=5823)
Proposed patch: Add user preference 'watchrollback'

I assume, nobody is currently working on this, but as it seems quite
straightforward to implement, I gave it a try.

Per comment #3 and #4 this patch adds a separate user preference for watching
rolled back pages automatically. To make the display page after the rollback
work properly, I had to add the methods watch() and unwatch() to the Title
class, so $wgTitle-userIsWatching() gives the correct result afterwards.
Actually there are some more places, that call $wgUser-addWatch( $title )
which could be replaced now by $title-watch(), but I didn't want to add too
much clutter to the patch, so I left it for now.

Of course, any comments are appreciated.

Ok, the update-special-pages and update-special-pages-small scripts had old
hardcoded paths for PHP (/usr/local/bin/php which doesn't apply to current
installs) *and* attempted to use /etc/cluster to pick which wikis to hit; the
cluster id file is missing on hume (the batch host these are running on) and is
presumably obsolete.

I'm doing a manual run of the small-wikis updates to ensure everything seems to
be in order. So far so good! :)

I'd be a bit leery of this. While it's a common practice to use action=purge to
force a re-render of pages when they are being cached, I'm not sure it's
something we should *promote* the use of. In theory, when things change how a
page is rendered, it should be updated. When it doesn't, that is a bug.
Promoting people to use action=purge will make people more likely to just purge
the cache and forget why it didn't show up right to begin with.

In short: purge is a dirty hack around what should be happening automatically,
and we shouldn't be encouraging its use (even though it's very helpful to
have).

I have to admit this has been driving me fairly batty of late as well.

Tim, can we find a friendlier security config for this? Patches and screenshots
are both being forced to download for offline viewing, which is a pretty nasty
workflow disruption.

Maybe a captcha would do the trick.

No, these are humans. Often it's a serial vandal the admin has blocked. To get
revenge they'll send dozens (hundreds in some cases) of password reset emails
to the admin. A CAPTCHA will slow them down only (and you can imagine that
someone who is so bored they would take the time to send hundreds of such
emails would solve the CAPTCHAs and keep on going). The whole point is to
*stop* them.

[Bug 12963] allow per-page exceptions to spam blacklist

2009-02-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12963

--- Comment #3 from Waldir wal...@email.com 2009-02-17 22:17:28 UTC ---
The site-wide whitelist allows the listed urls for all the pages of the side,
afaik; it is meant to override the global blacklist (that is, it is a site-wide
list exceptions for meta-site blacklisted urls, rather than single-page
exceptions for the site-wide blacklist). Now, I might be wrong, but I'm pretty
sure I asked some people about this before I submitted this bug. If the
whitelist does indeed allow specifying only one or a few pages where an url is
allowed (like in MediaWiki:Bad image list), then this should at best be
closed as WORKSFORME. Otherwise, I think it is a worthy enhancement.

No, it is /of course/ used for exceptions to blacklisting on the local
blacklist! This is often done for domains which have been spammed, but the main
page (domain.com/index.html or something) is needed as a link on the article
about the site/organization/whatever.

That's the key. Allowing slow abuse instead of fast is not the solution (and
could conceivably block legitimate use of the feature). We should really be
able to block the IP from just email bombing via Special:UserLogin on an
as-needed basis.

Sure, but since IPs are mostly dynamic, the admin would have to ask it to a
steward... each time (each day or more often if the bombers change their IPs).
So, with one or two emails per day (or per 7 days, since the new password is
good for that time), the admin could get even less emails than with IP
blocking.

Right, but you can whitelist it, add the domain, and then remove it from the
whitelist. Until bug 16325 is fixed. After that... dunno. In that case maybe.
Then the issue becomes whether you want to actually link to goatse.cx on
goatse.cx... I'm not sure that we do (and in fact we don't do that). I
really really don't see the point in implementing this, but I'm done commenting
on it. Again, I'd suggest that this be marked WONTFIX.

revision is affected, it is unnecessary for RevisionDeleted which may be used
just to redact metadata or log entries.

What should happen (ideally) is that the show/hide option is available, but at
most, the hide text option is greyed out if this is the current revision
(with an explanation).

[Bug 17544] New: Hide captcha on account creation after user succeeds

2009-02-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17544

Summary: Hide captcha on account creation after user succeeds
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Keywords: accessibility
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: User login/settings
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: tbertels+bugzi...@gmail.com

When a user tries to create an account, if the captcha is successful but the
username is already taken or the passwords doesn't match, the user has to take
the test again. This is bad, especially since captchas are far from user
friendly.

So, why not keep in mind that the user passed the captcha ?

[Bug 17545] New: Consider allowing to sight a page with a null edit

2009-02-17 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: Consider allowing to sight a page with a null edit
 Product: MediaWiki extensions

 Platform: All
 URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Dummy_edit#Null_edit
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement

Component: FlaggedRevs
AssignedTo: jschulz_4...@msn.com
ReportedBy: wiki.melancho...@web.de

Not sure whether this is feasible or reasonable at all, but consider allowing
to sight a page by a null edit.

User(s) reported they wanted to edit an article, but didn't do any changes in
the end. By checking review this revision below the edit box they wanted to
at least sight that yet un-sighted article 'on-the-fly' (but without dummy
editing the article null edit (does refresh cache)). But this doesn't work
yet, although form data probably is sumbited very well to the server.

For some users, sighting an article goes with editing; this seems to be their
workflow.

Years ago probably someone said: Tongan = faka-Tonga, without too much
thinking, and since that time that error has permeated into all wikis. But it
is incorrect. In English perhaps a [countryname] can be an adjective to any
noun (French cheese, English county, Samoan people, Tongan house), or lacking
the noun, it can act as a noun itself, meaning the language of that country.
Not so in Tongan. Fakatonga means Tongan as an adjective and never as a noun.
Tongan language therefore must be translated as lea fakatonga (or lea
faka-Tonga, the jury is out on that, but since fakatonga can also means
'south', perhaps the latter form should be preferred).

As such: can some priviliged sysop change 'Faka-Tonga' into 'Lea faka-Tonga'
everywhere ?

w:wa:Wikipedia:Pordjet_Motî is the portal to it and the lemmata are in the
namespace Motî:, which is not a real namespace but just a prefix. Now
they want to tranfer those lemmata to wa.wikt. Could somebody transfer those
pages to http://wa.wiktionary.org (preferably without the Motî: bit)?
Thanks. Regards,

Could we get some id attributes on the Global Blocking form? The reason is so
that one can make the form automatically focus using Javascript, to aid in
speeding up the process of banning proxies. I've attached a simple patch that

Alexandre Emsenhuber, Try this using IE7:

Click Tools, then click delete browsing history and clear everything. Close
IE7.

Now open IE7, click on Tools, Internet options, Privacy, and slide to choose
the setting BLOCK ALL COOKIES, then go to bugzilla.wikimedia.org and Login
with your email and password, then click on enter a new bug, and you will see
it will Log you out, so you will NOT be able to enter a new bug report.
This is because mediawiki uses COOKIES and if cookies are DISABLED on a web
browser, you cannot login OR you will be LOGGED out.
Using Sessions works WITHOUT cookies. That's why I said use Sessions instead
of cookies.

Another example, with your cookies STILL blocked, go to wikipedia.org, and
login and it will say this:

Login error.Wikipedia uses cookies to log in users. You have cookies disabled.
Please enable them and try again.

Brad Jorsch, the Session key is DELETED when a user closes their browser.

URL-based session tokens are unsafe (they leak to 3rd-party referers and in
cut-n-paste), disrupt caching, and are otherwise troublesome -- cookies were
introduced to HTTP precisely to allow state like login sessions to be handled
more sensibly than this.

MediaWiki does not and will not support URL-based sessions due to those
problems.

If you are referring instead to HTTP authentication, that's even harder to deal
with -- there's no native way to close a login session or forget credentials
temporarily. We have no intention to support this either, though there are HTTP
auth plugins available.
