[Bug 19229] Captcha in the latin script fails people who do not do Latin

(In reply to comment #2)
(In reply to comment #1)
I bet 99% of captcha crackers can't even *begin* to analyse non-latin
 scripts.
There's probably a significant increase in security to be had from opening
 up
the character set used in the captchas.

I don't see how, unless you start giving non-latin captchas to everyone, in
which case we will quickly find outselves without any new accounts...

If you give a Cyrillic captcha on ruwiki, that means only spambots that can
read a cyrillic captcha (or who can navigate the vagarities of CentralAuth) can
spam on ruwiki. Ditto for every other wiki on which we can serve a non-latin
captcha. No, it doesn't provide increased security on say, enwiki, because we
need to continue to serve latin captchas there, but wherever we *can* serve
captchas in other scripts, we get improved security.

[Bug 19271] Early user contributions are incorrectly flagged as new

Fixed in r52096. All pre-April 2008 revisions will now be incorrectly reported
as *not* new, which is of course still incorrect, but much less confusing.
Getting the new flag to work correctly for these old revisions requires the
rev_parent_id population script to be run on WMF wikis; I think there might be
an open bug for that even.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19276

--- Comment #2 from Splarka h...@goldrush.com 2009-06-18 09:16:44 UTC ---
This would be broken into little pieces by cache, and rather useless I think.

Here is an experimental gadget. It is necessarly a big ugly horrible mash of
functions to find what timezone offset the time given was actually in (one can
NOT assume it is the same as the browser's):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Splarka/lastmod.js

What could be done, is to have li id=lastmod contain a comment like:

li id=lastmod This page was last modified on 18 June 2009 at 00:54.
!--1245316447-- /li

This then could very easily be parsed as a Unix timestamp by javascript, making
the above gadget about 1/10th the size, with no API calls. There would also be
no cache issues.

Suggest repurpose the bug for exposing unix time (hidden?) into the li.

If you go to Special:RecentChanges, enter a tag filter into the field, and
click go, all is well. However, if you then type *another* filter in and click
go, the original tag filter is still added to the URL (after the new one) so
clicking go still returns the same filter. Even blanking the box does not
unset the filter.

This is very likely a problem with the site js on pmswiki. Try removing the
custom code from MediaWiki:Common.js. It seems to rewrite the search page to a
wrong url like this:

but the correct url (which works correctly) is:

Pages created by editors (and autoeditors) marked as reviewed in history but
shown as unreviewed in recent changes and watch lists. This happens only if
there is the only one edit in the page history, though. If someone makes a
reviewed edit in the page, the page status gets fixed.

Also, there are cases when unreviewed edits are shown as reviewed in the
interface (but not in the history) but after some time they are shown as
unreviewed in the interface, too.

Of course you haven't heard complaints about too-aggressive matching, because
the affected users are unregistered. They either picked a different name and
forgot about it, or gave up. Not-aggressive-enough matching will only hurt
registered users, and in particular established users who trolls want to
impersonate, so they'll be much more likely to make a fuss.

URL fixed.

[Bug 19279] New: Special:PrefixIndex and Special:AllPages have wrong ordering

2009-06-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: Special:PrefixIndex and Special:AllPages have wrong
ordering

 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: minor
 Priority: Normal
Component: Special pages
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: cat...@vp.pl

Can someone please fix the anti-intuitive ASCII ordering on automatically
generated lists of pages? Users surely don't expect or desire the ordering
AZ - A x - Aa. There seems to be a properly case-insensitive list
of pages in existence, as it works for type-ahead in the search box, so I don't
think this should be hard to fix (of course leaving the current method as an
available option for ASCII buffs).

[Bug 19280] New: PDF generator license terms should reflect dual license

I generated a PDF today on enwiki and noticed that the license page does not
reflect the CC-BY-SA license; it just says GFDL. This is particularly bad for
articles that have incorporated CC-BY-SA text and so are no longer licensed
under the GFDL at all.

[Bug 19281] New: Page-category mapping feature

2009-06-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19281

 Web browser: ---
 Summary: Page-category mapping feature
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Categories
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: cat...@vp.pl

There's a perennial problem over what to do with eponymous categories -
whether (for example) Category:London should be assigned as a subcategory
of Category:English cities, and if it is, whether London should then be
taken out of the latter category (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Categorization/Eponymous_RFC for a
discussion that shows there's currently no entirely satisfactory solution).
Anyway, the problem would largely go away if the following feature could be
implemented, and I wonder if it would be feasible.

The idea is that we could map a page to a distinguished category (for
example, the syntax with a space sortkey would cause that
category to be the distinguished category for the current page, say Xxx).
This would have two effects (besides placing the page in the category as now):
1) on the page, an additional category box would appear
containing the Categories for Xxx, i.e. the categories to which Xxx has
been assigned, even though Category:Xxx itself has not been assigned to them;
2) on any other category containing Xxx, there would be a category expand
button (a + sign or something) next to Xxx on the list of pages, which would
expand to the category tree for Category:Xxx (thus allowing access to
Category:Xxx from every category containing Xxx without the need to make it a
subcategory of all those categories).
I know it sounds complicated, but I can assure you it would make this
functionality much slicker for both editors and viewers.

Please delete wiki set Emergency flagged revision bot group

unnecessary, because wasn't resolved issue (bug19207).

This should really be possible through the normal interface, not as a site

--- Comment #2 from Leinad danny.lei...@gmail.com 2009-06-18 17:40:09 UTC ---
From de.wiki:

* Be treated as an automated process (bot)
* Edit semi-protected pages (autoconfirmed)
* Have one's own edits automatically marked as patrolled (autopatrol)
* Not create redirects from source pages when moving pages
(suppressredirect)
* Not have minor edits to discussion pages trigger the new messages prompt
(nominornewtalk)
* Perform captcha triggering actions without having to go through the
captcha (skipcaptcha)
* Use higher limits in API queries (apihighlimits)
* Use of the write API (writeapi)

But anything about 'autoreview' permission?

In editors and autoreviewers we have:
* Automatically mark revisions as sighted (autoreview)
and this permission also should be in bot group or am I mistaken?

With bug 19279 being marked as a duplicate of this, I'm wondering what's the
state of play on the (perhaps more specific) issue of the ordering of pages in
English Wikipedia - on Special:PrefixIndex for example (where we have the
totally counter-intuitive ordering Z - space - a. This bug looks to have been
kicking around for five years - is there a solution, or at least partial one,
in the pipeline? (Perhaps based on whatever it is that generates
case-insensitive lists for type-ahead in the search box.)

The removal of the book in the background was deliberate. The theme is based on
a gradient style, which both technically and aesthetically clashes with the
concept of using a background image.

At some point, we will need to let go of MonoBook to move forward.

It would help immensely if there was a gadget usage statistic implemented in
MediaWiki.

Knowing the usage patterns of gadgets would allow to identify rarely used and
too exotic gadgets that would be better used as a traditional user script. This
would help in maintaining the gadget selection list at a user friendly size and
would also help to prioritize gadget development.

In addition to the absolute numbers, the most meaningful information would be
about active users, with single-use testing-only accounts and dormant
accounts excluded. A simple definition of active user could be someone who
has registered more than two months ago and was active during the last month.

importDump.php already handles gzip; it should handle the other formats that
dumpBackup.php supports.

[Bug 19289] Make importDump.php handle bzip2 and 7zip

2009-06-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon

adds bzip support

bzip was easy enough, but when I try 7zip with:
$filename = 'mediawiki.compress.7z://' . $filename;

I get:
Warning:
fopen(mediawiki.compress.7z://eswikinews-20090619-pages-meta-history.xml.7z):
failed to open stream: No such file or directory in
/.../maintenance/importDump.php on line 128

I've got p7zip, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
