If you want to restrict query results to the namespace Category, then you need to write [[:Category:+]]. Restricting to results that belong to some (arbitrary) category is not supported. Also, I am surprised that [[Category:*]] was supported before SMW 1.0. You can use ?Category as a printout to get this result in current SMW versions with #ask syntax. In general, the beta compatibility mode was introduced to simplify the transition from early beta releases of SMW. Just like MediaWiki, SMW does not aim at arbitrary backwards compatibility with old releases, especially if they were explicitly flagged as beta. Since the last beta version of SMW is much older than one year now, we will actually be removing the beta compatibility flag in one of the next versions. Accordingly, we will not fix problems with the old syntax parsing anymore. A new feature is provided to address this in the next release (currently
available in SVN). By specifying - or (empty string) as an output format
in queries, outputs are returned in plain, unformatted form. Example query:
{{#ask: [[Category:Country]]
| ?area#km²
| ?population#
| ?capital#-
}}
will return a table of four columns, all of which have an explicit output
format (the content after #). The first column are simply the countries, the
second is their area converted to km² as usual. The third one is their
population as a plain string (caveat: when numbers get large, scientific
notation is used; fixes for preventing this are welcome). The fourth column is
their capital, again as a plain (unlinked) string. Empty format strings and -
mean the same. Spaces are ignored.
For switching off all links (even in the first column), one can set the
parameter link=none or replace the first standard column with a new version
by adding the parameter mainlabel=- (hide first column) and the new printout
?# (display main column, with empty formatting string).

In principle, there is just one not-so-complex function doing it right now: smwfNumberFormat() found in SMW_GlobalFunctions.php If you could extend this function to support the kind of behavior that you envision, then I can take care of updating the datatypes in a suitable way. I think you suggest this only for plain numbers (no units), right? Internationalization would be a problem, since there is probably no common scheme on how/when to abbreviate large numbers. As a workaround for the problem that you describe, I have shifted the default maximum size for numbers that are shown without using exp notation. At least all population numbers should now be displayed without exp. For internal links no icon is shown, which is fine, but links to other wikis also have no icon. This is problem in wiktionary in particular. There there are a large number of links to the wikipedia, but there's no way to tell that this is happening, so clicking on the link puts you somewhere very different without warning. The reason for the confusing outputs might be, that you do not actually see the title that causes the problem, but the title that was successfully processed previously. I have modified SVN to not include this runtime check for Title -- the parent class Job does not have this requirement either, so it should be okay. The rest of the code is actually quite careful about NULL titles already, so maybe the check was just overlooked when trying to fix a similar problem earlier. This change does not remove the problem that some titletext gets into the job queue although it is not a valid page title, but it certainly avoids the SMW-based error that you report. For example, on the article Lay's at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lay%27s two correctly working move url's would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MovePage/Lay%27s or http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:MovePagetarget=Lay%27s but in Classic, Cologne blue and Nostalgia it is http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:MovePagetarget=Lay%2527s It says %25 instead of %. It can happen for each % if there are more. The percent-encoding of % is %25 so maybe the url has been percent-encoded twice in a row.
