Assume the new magic word is R.
When a new revision is being saved, replace {{subst:R}} in the page with the
revision id of the revision being written. It will be more convenient to make
pages like [[meta:Identification noticeboard]] if that is implemented.

This would be useful for automatic testing, which would visit various pages and check for the presence of these tags (among other things). A code for the proposed new error_handler function is attached with a few tests. It mimics the 'default' error handler, but puts the errors in a div with an appropriate ID. Perhaps acceptable would be to have an index.php parameter for the revision after that you could use if bug 23876 were fixed, or for revision at timestamp. Both would have marginal failure cases with simultaneous edits (which you could further refine by filtering by revisionuser too). Patch for rendering
This patch adds short-circuits to ParserOptions::mTemplateCallback during the
parse() phase of preview, save, and parserTests (bug 8158), which includes the
current text of the page instead of the previous revision from the database.
This means that it won't change the behaviour of {{subst:, which continues to
use the previous page's revision, and any extensions that deal with the current
version of the current article will not be able to see the pending revision (as
who knows what they might do).
Is this approach the right way to do things, and, if so, is this patch
sufficient?

This patch would fix that. CAVEAT: I do not know if there is a valid condition under which the REQUEST_URI would be blank in a non-IIS environment. Someone who knows this code and its purpose should look at this to make sure such a patch wouldn't uninentionally break a $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] == '' condition that is valid for reasons other than IIS doesn't use it. iTunes article seems to display as ITunes, despite having
{{DISPLAYTITLE:iTunes}}. It works correctly for individual revisions from the
history page, including the current. Purging and nulledits do not seem to do
the trick.
Possible reasons:
1: some issue in flaggedrevisions extension
2: deploy of Vector today
