After some more research, this workaround turns out to be widely used on the
web to circumvent bad defaults and unpredictable/inconsistent rendering across
browsers (see http://www.brunildo.org/test/monospace_fsize.html and the links
there), so the option to configure monospaced fonts differently that some
browsers offer isn't very useful anyway. Therefore closing as invalid because
removing it would probably cause more problems than doing good.

can't seem to find what specific part of that code makes it crash...

"pre, code, tt { font-family: monospace, sans-serif; }" has been added as a
workaround for bug 20706.

This workaround is problematic because it exploits a Mozilla bug
(https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=175415). It causes the following
new problems:

(1) Mozilla users can no longer adjust the size of monospaced fonts
independently of sans-serif fonts because Mozilla will use the configured size
of sans-serif fonts even for monospaced fonts. This "fixes" bug 20706 just
because Mozilla's default size for sans-serif fonts is 16px while the default
size of monospaced fonts is 13px.
(2) It doesn't always work because some other css rules (extensions, local
customizations, inline style attributes of templates etc.) may override it with
"font-family: monospace", effectively removing the "sans-serif" that triggers
the Mozilla behaviour.  elements inserted by the SyntaxHighlight GeSHi
extension are an example of this (bug 23708). In order to have it at least
consistent, the workaround would have to be added *everywhere*.
(3) It will stop working when the Mozilla bug is fixed.

Google Chrome seems to behave exactly like Mozilla in this regard btw. (same
default sizes, same bug as Mozilla).

These can't be implemented anytime soon, because they all self-close in IE
prior to IE9 unless you use a JavaScript workaround.  This means that most are
confusing to use at best for the next few years.

Also, I'd want to be cautious until these are more stable.   no longer
exists, for example, so it'd have been a pain if we'd ever whitelisted it.

Resolving this as LATER -- these cannot really be used effectively until
IE6/7/8 are marginal enough that we're willing to require JS for them to
display correctly.  If you have any places you think they'd be useful despite
this problem, feel free to reopen.

It´s not fixed. I Updated SM, Maps, Validator, SF and SMW to r67965 and there
is no visible improvement (result map is still stucking at "Loading Map ..."

 is implemented.   is obsolete and will not be whitelisted; use
 instead.   and  are basically useless.   is dodgy because
it's theoretically supposed to insert quotation marks automatically, but that
doesn't work on any IE <= 8 (IIRC), and it's non-conformant to add the
quotation marks manually, so it can't actually be used.   makes no
sense on wikis.

That leaves what, ?  That sounds like it might be worth whitelisting. 
Does anyone have any actual evidence that it's used by search engines? 
Alternatively, S. McCandlish, what's this rich glossary code and why does it
need ?

It turns out I overlooked the fact that a high cols attribute is needed on the
textarea. I'll work on fixing that tomorrow; in the meantime, you can try
setting the width of the edit area (in your preferences in the Editing section)
to a high value like 1000 (it won't go higher than that), that should make the
bug go away.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to the search input.
2. Place your mouse cursor directly below the input (in this example try just
below the h1 border line).
3. Write "anime" (using en.wiki for this example).
4. Press ENTER

Expected result:
Go to (or search for) "anime".

Actual result:
Go to "Anime International Company" (the position that was under the mouse
cursor).

Cool isn't it :-).

To fix this I think you might check for mouse move before activating a row
below the mouse cursor. Maybe you could use some flag for it...

Depending on whether this 'problem' can/will be isolated and can be fixed I
think it's best to register an account (if you haven't done so already) and set
in your preferences under the "Appearance"-tab and choose the "monobook"-skin
as your default.

Even if the source can be isolated, it's another question whether it can be
fixed or not as the issue is, as far as I know, a bug in the old Netscape
browser, not in the Vector-code.

If you can't, try updating your browser to a newer version. Since you're likely
on an older computer, look for the most recent version of the browser that is
compatible with your system.

I know from experience that the Opera browser tends to be fairly good at being
compatible with older computers. 

For example, Opera 9.64 works with Mac OS X 10.2 which is pretty cool if you
know that OSX 10.2 is from 2003 and Opera 9.64 from March 2009.

see pages in monobook.

Here's an example:

This is output from {{#ask[[someprop::someval]] | ?shortdesc=}}.  "Shortdesc"
is of type String, so it should be expected to possibly contain quotes, as
above.  However, this short circuits the decoding of the JSON -- eg, php's own
decode_json will fail here and return NULL.  Parsing the reply to escape the
quotes -- so: "Implements \"tail -f\" functionality" corrects the issue and
decode_json works properly. Obviously, SMW should not be providing bad JSON
data!

I don't have NS 7.02, but I tested a little with NS 7.1 on Windows XP.
Swedish Wikipedia which still use monobook works, and English Wikipedia works
when using "?useskin=monobook" or if disabling javascript.
Trying to look at English or French Wikipedia in vector skin with javascript
enabled crashes the browser.

Not a bug in MediaWiki, just an overzealous antivirus. If the problem persists
with up-to-date virus defnitions, please report to McAfee.

When I uncheck "Enable dialogs for inserting links, tables and more" in
Special:Preferences, I thought what I lost was only a better user interface,
however, actually that "Find and Replace" feature disappeared as well.

Hi,

This is a superlative editor. Thanks to all for keeping this going so well. 

I have a problem that when I try to use FCKeditor to change existing pages
created through the MediaWiki standard editor. When I fire up the editor, and
check the 'wikitext' in a page containing an existing  tag I have the
problem that the FCK converter to wikitext does not consider the additional
pipes following the Image: command. 

For example :
Original Wikitext


Image:SF_BP_L3.jpg|thumb|800px|Name of my image
rect 124 106 208 122 [[link to part a]]
rect 124 140 332 156 [[link to part b]]
 

FCKeditor converted Wikitext


Image:SF_BP_L3.jpg
thumb|800px|Name of my imagerect 124 106 208 122 [[link to part a]]
rect 124 140 332 156 [[link to part b]]
 

So if i save the above after making some changes in some other part of the page
I get the error:


Error Message:
Error: unrecognised shape at line 3, each line must start with one of: default,
rect, circle or poly

As you can see the text after the file extension .jpg in the above is moved to
the next line and concatenated with the firsts image-map-reference line thus
making the image not renderable

That would be kinda ridiculous. It would be better to store the displaytitle in
the page_props table, if it isn't already. The ParserOutput class has a nice
interface for this (ParserOutput::setProperty()).

Hi,

Here in Bamako, Mali, we have two students working on the French Wiktionnary
several hours per day.
They encounter very frequently a problem which is their browser proposing to
download index.php after clicking on a link.

When this problem occurs, it usually last for several minutes (up to 15
sometimes) then it works as usual.

It affects any page of the FRWK randomly.

I believe it's one of the numerous apache server that is mis-configured or
overloaded.

We are using IceWeasel on Debian PPC over a 384k connection by Orange Mali.

Please, let us know if we can help track down and fix this issue.
I will try to comment back with a date & time next time the problem occurs.
