[Bug 26023] New: deleteBatch.php minor usage documantation

2010-11-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26023

   Summary: deleteBatch.php minor usage documantation
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.17-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: trivial
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Maintenance scripts
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: jida...@jidanni.org
CC: innocentkil...@gmail.com

deleteBatch.php --help says:
Usage: ... listfile
... listfile: File with titles to delete, separated by newlines

Actually these should both be [listfile], not listfile

Also say:
[listfile]: File with titles to delete, separated by newlines. If
not given, stdin is used.

From an outsider's point of view it looks like an oversight to only have
[[Special:PrefixIndex]].

On it you could put mention the reason for no complimentary
[[Special:SuffixIndex]] there for people to see...

Tons of times when I wanted to use it...

Let's find all the ... Agencys on my wiki, etc.

Why does [[Special:PrefixIndex]] go ahead and find things before it has been
told what to find?

E.g., click on the above URL. You see it has wastefully found everything
starting with what it thinks is a null pattern or something.

Why can't it wait until someone has filled out the box instead of forging ahead
and finding junk nobody is interested in for free without being asked?

[Bug 6455] Set $wgPFEnableStringFunctions = true on WMF wikis

2010-11-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6455

--- Comment #114 from Tisza Gergő gti...@gmail.com 2010-11-20 11:35:35 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #110)
Experience has shown that people will just write pages that use up whatever
 the
resource limits are. They'll use the functions to write still more
 complicated
templates, which currently they can't write because of preinclusion size
limits. It's not at all obvious it will make anything faster, it will just
allow more complexity for the same length limit.
 [...]
Maybe we should enable the string functions, but reduce preinclusion length
limit, or impose other limits on template complexity.

You make it sound as if complexity would be a bad thing in itself. That is not
so - complex tasks require complex solutions, most of the time. MediaWiki
itself has become much more complex along the years, the editing workflow
became more complex, Vector was a huge jump in the complexity of the editing
GUI, and so on. Everyone accepts these as necessary, so why not the same for
complex templates? Seems like a bit of NIH syndrome to me (or more precisely,
Not Invented By Us, because it *is* invented here, just not by the developers).

I sense a good amount of developer hubris in the debates about templates - you
should leave this stuff to us, we could do it better. Sure you could - but you
could do much less of it. By the same account, we should leave writing
encyclopedia articles to professionals, because they are much better at it
(except that Nupedia had some 100 articles after three years). This line of
thinking is completely contrary to Wikipedia philosophy. Wikipedia is about
generativity, community empowerment and ultra-low barriers to entry - you can't
seriously suggest that making a feature request and waiting for some developer
to pick it up every time someone needs a new template would be a scalable
approach.

People shouldn't have been writing programs in wikitext to begin with, they
should use proper scripts of some type -- extensions or bots or such.

This gets thrown around a lot, but how those proper scripts could replace the
current template system is never demonstrated. Bots are not much help with
dynamic text (and do have problems of their own, like littering page
histories). Extensions, as I tried to point above, are not scalable (whatever
you might think of the template syntax, it is a lot easier to learn than
writing secure and scalable MediaWiki extensions, and we didn't even consider
yet the epic fail of code review). The conclusion of the bug about Lua was that
templates using scripts interpreted by some external tool are out of the
question - they have security issues, and they would break compatibility of
Wikipedia with pretty much all other MediaWiki installations. What is left
then? Inventing another template language and writing another parser in PHP?
IIRC Werdna actually offered to do that and was turned down, because that is
still not a proper solution. The proper solution, apparently, is to deny the
Wikimedia community of a useful tool, out of purely aesthetic reasons.

parser in PHP? IIRC Werdna actually offered to do that and was turned down,
because that is still not a proper solution.

I was working on a template scripting extension called InlineScripts. It is in
Subversion and it was working last time I checked (it's most severe problem was
the documentation, or, to be more specific, the absence of it). It was
discussed on the developers' conference in April and the only reason I stopped
working on it was the lack of time.

Patch to change Title::getUserPermissionsErrors() to make correct checks for
read permission

The problem is bigger that this. Title::getUserPermissionsErrors() is not
supposed to be used to check for read permissions; but Title::userCanRead() can
only check permissions for $wgUser.

I attached a patch to make Title::getUserPermissionsErrors() check correctly
for read permissions; dunno if Domas will like it since it's ~1.4 times slower
than the old method (on my local machine).

My apologies for not understanding, but why was this changed from LATER to
FIXED?

Does MediaWiki currently have lists of pages in a category and it's
subcategories? How can that be used? Specifically: how was fixed the problem
exemplified in item (3) of comment #0 ?
(In reply to comment #0)
 3. Example: When I add an article to category Cat, it should also
 _automatically_ belong to categories
mammal, animal and creature. When I now browse through the categorie
 animal, I will find the
article. This is not the case in the current system. The result is chaos.

[Bug 26027] New: SRF: The min and max math formats should work with dates and strings

Currently the format = min and format = max results formats only work with
properties with '[[Has type::Number]]'.

It seems reasonable for at least these two math-type formats to also work with
dates, strings, pages, coordinates, etc., etc.

The following page shows an example of the format failing to produce any output
(not even a friendly warning) when being called on a non numeric format:

http://scratchpad.referata.com/wiki/SRF_format_min_test

I'm getting round this by using the array extension and a horrible hack ;-)

Cheers,
Dan.

[Bug 26028] New: Script should not remove line-breaks after initial noinclude tags

2010-11-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26028

Summary: Script should not remove line-breaks after initial
noinclude tags
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: wikimedia-deployment
  Platform: All
   URL: http://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Wikisource:
Scriptoriumoldid=2201305#Why_line_breaks_are_removed.
3F
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Page editing
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: mybugs.m...@gmail.com

As explained at Wikisource, there is some script removing line-breaks when they
are inserted after the closing /noinclude of the initial section of the page.
This was noted when editing pages in Page: namespace on Wikisources.

The problem only happens when javascript is enabled in browser.

When an editor is correcting a typo in such a page where there are line-breaks
after the initial noinclude section, its edit will also remove the line-break
even if if when previewing the changes made there was no lines removed. This is
annoying, since the user is not aware that he will be removing that and can
only detect that after saving the page. Then, to correct the problem it will
needed to disable javascript, or add more lines than the MediWiki will save in
the wikicode of the page (and he still need to hope no one else edit the page
afterwards).

That is caused by the broken skype toolbar not mediawiki.

To be more clear to the bug reporter: You, or someone who edited the article in
question, has installed the Skype toolbar for Firefox. Unfortunately, this
toolbar decides to convert everything it sees into a Skype phone number.
Including editable text fields. If you installed the toolbar, you should
uninstall it; otherwise, if you come across instances of Skype phone numbers in
articles, use the page history to find who added it, and tell them to uninstall
the toolbar.

Is it possible to add a back to top button.

The content is generalized in the beginning of every article through points
(1,2,3, etc) and subpoints (1.1,1.2,1.3, etc) and it's great. But in very long
articles would be nice to have this button after the end of every point or
subpoint for better and faster navigation on the page and between seperate
points.

For if/when this is implemented, a possible way to aavoid the ugly repeating
'back to top' links all over the place, a solution would be having it 'float'
in a fixed position on the bottom left. As part of the sidebar but staying
fixed when scrolling down. Avoids having it duplicate and adds that it is
always in the same place.

[Bug 6455] Set $wgPFEnableStringFunctions = true on WMF wikis

2010-11-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6455

--- Comment #116 from Ted Kandell ted_kand...@yahoo.com 2010-11-21 02:18:18
UTC ---
I would like to add a concrete example to this debate, an actual use case.

Many entries in Wikipedia describe some sort of phylogenetic data, from
genealogies, to the phylogenies of language families, to Y and mitochondrial
DNA haplogroups.

A standard way of representing such trees is through the Newick format:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newick_format

There are all sorts of template hacks in Wikipeida to represent family trees,
genetic trees, language families, and all sorts of other related information.

Wouldn't it be better to just add the standard Newick format tree
representation to articles, and then use templates to display the data in
various sorts of ways? The fundamental information would then be preserved in a
standardized display-independent format. Also there are a large number of tools
out there that can generate graphic images based on the Newick format.

It isn't very difficult to parse a Newick format string and create a basic tree
display template from it. However, all this really would need is a full set of
string functions. It's true that PHP and MediaWiki wasn't designed to be a kind
of parser or compiler, but what sort of alternative can anyone think of?
Should we put in a request for MediaWiki developers to support the Newick
format, and any number of other important display-independent representations
of data widely used in Wikipedia? Who decides, and who does the work?

There is a good argument to doing it right and implementing a full scripting
language (aside from Javascript?) but in the meantime, all sorts of important
data that can't quite be represented as text is being added to Wikipedia in the
form of templates. How can all the various sorts of tree data now in Wikipedia
be extracted - or just redisplayed using whatever new and better display
template comes along?

I don't know if this can be added as a bug in and of itself, but it it does
point out the fundamental problem. MediaWiki has text, graphic, audio, and
video formats, but is missing the ability to parse certain other critical basic
information storage formats that the developers never considered.

According to http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Article_count
the article count can either be link count or comma count.

Wiktionary (in English, Swedish and some other languages) needs to
count all articles in the main namespace that aren't redirects.
To this end, bots add a fake link to all pages, so they should be
included in the link count. This is of course highly inefficient.

MediaWiki needs another option that counts all articles,
and this option should be activated on Wiktionary.

There is community consensus to enable StringFunctions; if the developers do
not enable it themselves, the community hereby requests that the WMF instruct
 the developers to do so.

That's not really how it works. The developers *are* WMF, or at least a subset
thereof. (Or were you under the impression that volunteer devs opinions'
mattered in such cases? LOL)

Screenshot of inactive tabs (cropped)

Look at [[Main page]].
Now purge the main page so the url has action=purge in it.

In both cases look at the Read tab in Vector. In the second case, the read
tab will have the same visual style as the Edit and History tabs (i.e. it
will be inactive or not selected)

Obviously this is not specific to the main page.

Purging should leave the Read tab active, since, for all intents and purposes,
the user is still reading.

[Bug 26026] Add API module for Special:FundraiserStatistics

ContributionHistory seems to redirect to FundraiserStatistics

This bug (bug 26026) is about providing an API module for
Special:FundraiserStatistics
(http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Special:FundraiserStatistics).
Special:FundraiserStatistics has bar graphs and fundraiser statistics. An API
module will allow easier export of the data for offline analysis.

Bug 25440 is about providing an API module for Special:ContributionHistory (or
Special:ContributionHistory/en more specifically). Tomasz added an emergency
redirect in r76647 from Special:ContributionHistory(/en) to
Special:FundraiserStatistics. This should be reversed.
Special:ContributionHistory(/en) provides a log of donor comments and amounts.
Bug 25440 is about adding an API module to allow easier bot/script access to
donor comments.

Re-opening (un-duping) this bug.

[Bug 6455] Set $wgPFEnableStringFunctions = true on WMF wikis

(In reply to comment #116)
It isn't very difficult to parse a Newick format string and create a basic
 tree
display template from it. However, all this really would need is a full set of
string functions. It's true that PHP and MediaWiki wasn't designed to be a
 kind
of parser or compiler, but what sort of alternative can anyone think of?
Should we put in a request for MediaWiki developers to support the Newick
format, and any number of other important display-independent representations
of data widely used in Wikipedia?

...
I don't know if this can be added as a bug in and of itself, but it it does
point out the fundamental problem. MediaWiki has text, graphic, audio, and
video formats, but is missing the ability to parse certain other critical
 basic
information storage formats that the developers never considered.

This is kind of the main argument against string functions. Letting users
create parsers in wikitext is pretty much exactly the kind of thing that those
against it want to avoid. Wikitext is not supposed to be a programming
language.[1] This is also a good example of what Aryeh was talking about in
comment #110.

A well-defined language that has applications in thousands of pages is an
excellent candidate for something that should be handled by an extension.

Who decides, and who does the work?

The same person who decides whether or not to enable string functions would
decide to enable a Newick extension. Anyone who knows PHP can do the work.

Old bug but wondering what the difficulty is. I honestly can not find this
display mode anywhere... Is it a javascript gadget somewhere perhaps? Or am I
just being dense and missing it?...

Sorry.. I am indeed just dense. It isn't a checkbox to PUT it under the edit
box it's a default checked box to put it above the edit box. hmm

[Bug 26035] New: make sure 'empty' sections are also empty on text browsers

2010-11-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26035

Summary: make sure 'empty' sections are also empty on text

Fine with me if you want to make empty sections (Bug #23026). Go right
ahead. But please please please do it a cleaner way, making sure that
they don't still inadvertently show up visible in text browsers!!

$ w3m -dump http://abj.jidanni.org/index.php?title=Special:Specialpages | grep
-C 7 Views

Namespaces

  • Special page

Search

[] [Go] [Search]

$ GET http://abj.jidanni.org/index.php?title=Special:Specialpages | grep -A 1

--
div id=p-views class=vectorTabs emptyPortlet
h5Views/h5
--
div id=p-cactions class=vectorMenu emptyPortlet
h5spanActions/spana href=#/a/h5

If you can't do it a cleaner way, then don't do it in the first place.
We never had such a problem with other skins.

If it is not to be shown to the general public, then don't show it to
text browsers users either, please.

[Bug 26036] New: Inconsistent behavior of redirects on existing images in pages versus API

2010-11-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26036

Summary: Inconsistent behavior of redirects on existing images
in pages versus API
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.17-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: API
AssignedTo: roan.katt...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: b-jor...@alum.northwestern.edu
CC: bryan.tongm...@gmail.com, s...@reedyboy.net,
vasi...@gmail.com, soxre...@gmail.com

If an image is uploaded and the description page is edited to be a redirect,
MediaWiki generally seems to ignore the redirect and use the existing image.
However, prop=imageinfo treats it as if it is a redirect with no image present
at the title.

To reproduce:
1. Upload an image, e.g. File:Test.png
2. Edit the description page to make it a redirect to another image.
3. Use an image link to [[File:Test.png]] in the page. Note that it displays
the image at File:Test.png, not whatever the redirect points to.
4. Use the API's prop=imageinfo with titles=File:Test.png. Note that it
displays no imagerepository= instead of imagerepository=local, and gives no
other information about the image.

I personally don't care whether the API is changed to match the in-page
behavior, or the in-page behavior is changed to match the API. But one or the
other needs fixing.
