[Bug 28519] idea: use the Interlanguage extension as a universal redirect center
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28519 --- Comment #2 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2011-04-13 06:02:54 UTC --- (In reply to comment #1) To ask the stupid question, why not send http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/باراك_أوباما in an email. 99% of modern programs will convert that to the correct percent encoding. It will correct it to the right percent encoding, but it will be very long. Just look at my first comment. And that's a relatively short name; it could be much longer, for example, like http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%B1%D8%A9_%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AC%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%AA_%D9%83%D9%88%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%8A%D8%B3%D8%A9_%D8%B3%D9%86%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%86 . It usually goes through, but it's terribly ugly. And in an IM program, like, GMail chat, sending such a link fills the whole screen with percent signs and digits. This personally seems kind of icky to me. If we did have the ability to resolve interlanguage names like this, and wanted to do something like this, why wouldn't we just make http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/magic name in some other lang automatically redirect to the correct page? [Bug 28519] idea: use the Interlanguage extension as a universal redirect center
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28519 --- Comment #3 from Nikola Smolenski smole...@eunet.rs 2011-04-13 07:08:43 UTC --- If I understand what you want correctly, you would like all wikis to have links in Latin alphabet, not necessarily short, but still shorter than the current ones. It is possible (srwiki already partly works that way and it could be improved), but I don't think that the Interlanguage Extension could help. For starters, there are no guarantees that Barack Obama on mul would always continue to point to باراك_أوباما on ar. Then, this may work for names, but articles about animals, or scientific terms, or whatever is not similar in most languages will be very dissimilar in English and the target language, thus negating the point of the Latin link. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. [Bug 28519] idea: use the Interlanguage extension as a universal redirect center
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28519 --- Comment #4 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2011-04-13 07:19:45 UTC --- The goal is not so much to make the URL short as to make it readable, assuming that anyone that is able to read the string wikipedia.org is able to read the string Barack_Obama. A lot of people are able to read both Barack_Obama and باراك_أوباما; some people are able to read only one of these strings; but i'm quite sure that %D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%83_%D8%A3%D9%88%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A7 is equally gibberish to everyone. It doesn't matter what the article is about and what the final name in the target language is. An Interlanguage wiki page is supposed to be a hub that points to the different names of the same thing in different languages, whether it's people, building materials, animals or towns. The name in the target language may change, but then the Interlanguage wiki will probably be updated. What i suggest is that the Interlanguage extension will simply redirect the reader to the article that is currently listed at the same page as the target article in the requested language. If there's no article about this in that language yet, then the extension can offer the reader to create an article in his language. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25845 --- Comment #14 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2011-04-13 15:09:24 UTC --- (In reply to comment #13) Reply to Comment #12: Requiring the user to register user scripts as modules seems a bit onerous to me. I think we should keep this simple for end users. Otherwise, they are going to keep using importScript for the rest of time. Couldn't we just detect for a parameter of type /(.*)\:(.*)\.(js|css)/i and either convert it into an external link or construct a module on behalf of the user? Then people could easily migrate... importScript('User:Foo/bar.js'); ...to... mediaWiki.loader.load('User:Foo/bar.js'); I couldn't agree more that such a short cut would be ideal, and in fact I believe it should be implemented. However in should not do what mw.legacy.importScript did (loading index.phptitle=..action=raw). Instead it would register/load the module on-demand. ie. load.php?wikiscripts=User:Foo/bar.jswikistyles=User:Foo/bar.css|MediaWiki:VectorAltenative.css (or just wikipages=). I strongly suggest they should be added. While, without TOC, it would already difficult to find a specific passage of a large article on a computer screen, it is almost impossible to do so using a small smartphone d-pad. [Bug 15607] Implement the Interlanguage extension in Wikipedia
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15607 --- Comment #83 from Erik Moeller moel...@scireview.de 2011-04-13 22:59:05 UTC --- Thanks, Brandon. I agree with all your design recommendations. The main additional point I would make is that it may be more desirable to work towards an inline editor (adds a row with editable cells right on the page) rather than a modal pop-up editor. From a deployment standpoint, can we target having the minimally improved edit links (per Brandon's spec) and the minimally improved table display (already in Tim's list)? For the table, if we have fields like Notes or Descriptions, we'll need a standardized wiki markup representation so that it can be cleanly manipulated either through a UI or through wikitext. Regarding the wiki, I'll go on record as saying that I'd still prefer data.* because it'll avoid renaming nightmares later (and it's quite likely that we'll end up overloading the project with additional features given its currently very narrow scope), but I'll leave it at that to avoid bikeshedding. :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 28531] New: Preferences page looks garbled.
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28531 Bug #: 28531 Summary: Preferences page looks garbled. Product: MediaWiki Version: 1.18-svn Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Keywords: i18n Severity: normal Priority: Low Component: User preferences AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org, bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net Classification: Unclassified Created attachment 8403 -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=8403 Screenshot of private wiki (useskin=Modern, uselang=ksh) section of Special:Preferences looking pretty garbled. Suggested solution: Give up trying to have a tabular layout which is not working anyways, and does serve a decent i18n. Rather make the page layout linewise where each topic is in a single table cell as wide as the screen/window, or wrap each topic in a paragraph on its own. If there are consecutive very similar rows, they line up in the same fashion anyways. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 28532] New: wfMsgExt() and wfMsgWikiHtml() use $wgOut-parse()
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28532 Bug #: 28532 Summary: wfMsgExt() and wfMsgWikiHtml() use $wgOut-parse() Product: MediaWiki Version: 1.18-svn Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: critical Priority: Low Component: Internationalization AssignedTo: s...@reedyboy.net ReportedBy: tstarl...@wikimedia.org Classification: Unclassified wfMsgExt() and wfMsgWikiHtml() use $wgOut-parse(). This is inappropriate and causes many bugs. For example, at the moment, if you try to view a wiki and your CentralAuth username is blacklisted, it will throw an exception Empty $mTitle in OutputPage::parse due to TitleBlacklistHooks::acceptNewUserName() calling wfMsgWikiHtml(). $wgMessageCache-transform() does this correctly. It uses a separate instance of the parser, it doesn't get titles or parser options from strange sources like $wgOut, it doesn't mind if $wgTitle is unset, and it fails gracefully if it is called re-entrantly. I suggest MessageCache::transform() be refactored to provide a getParser() method, which should then be used by a new method MessageCache::parse(), which should in turn be used by wfMsgWikiHtml() etc. instead of $wgOut-parse(). The guarding against re-entrant calls should be extended to cover both entry points. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l
