[Bug 28519] idea: use the Interlanguage extension as a universal redirect center

--- Comment #2 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2011-04-13

(In reply to comment #1)
 To ask the stupid question, why not send
 http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/باراك_أوباما in an email. 99% of modern programs
 will convert that to the correct percent encoding.

It will correct it to the right percent encoding, but it will be very long.
Just look at my first comment. And that's a relatively short name; it could be
much longer, for example, like
http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%B1%D8%A9_%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AC%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%AA_%D9%83%D9%88%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%8A%D8%B3%D8%A9_%D8%B3%D9%86%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%86
. It usually goes through, but it's terribly ugly. And in an IM program, like,
GMail chat, sending such a link fills the whole screen with percent signs and
digits.

 This personally seems kind of icky to me. If we did have the ability to
 resolve
 interlanguage names like this, and wanted to do something like this, why
 wouldn't we just make http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/magic name in some other
 lang automatically redirect to the correct page?

Also possible.

If I understand what you want correctly, you would like all wikis to have links
in Latin alphabet, not necessarily short, but still shorter than the current
ones. It is possible (srwiki already partly works that way and it could be
improved), but I don't think that the Interlanguage Extension could help. For
starters, there are no guarantees that Barack Obama on mul would always
continue to point to باراك_أوباما on ar. Then, this may work for names, but
articles about animals, or scientific terms, or whatever is not similar in most
languages will be very dissimilar in English and the target language, thus
negating the point of the Latin link.

--- Comment #4 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2011-04-13
07:19:45 UTC ---
The goal is not so much to make the URL short as to make it readable, assuming
that anyone that is able to read the string wikipedia.org is able to read the
string Barack_Obama. A lot of people are able to read both Barack_Obama and
باراك_أوباما; some people are able to read only one of these strings; but i'm
quite sure that
%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%83_%D8%A3%D9%88%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A7 is
equally gibberish to everyone.

It doesn't matter what the article is about and what the final name in the
target language is. An Interlanguage wiki page is supposed to be a hub that
points to the different names of the same thing in different languages, whether
it's people, building materials, animals or towns. The name in the target
language may change, but then the Interlanguage wiki will probably be updated.

What i suggest is that the Interlanguage extension will simply redirect the
reader to the article that is currently listed at the same page as the target
article in the requested language. If there's no article about this in that
language yet, then the extension can offer the reader to create an article in
his language.

[Bug 28510] Searching for terms with periods in the query string gives 403 errror - e.g. Data.gov

Using the search box on en.m.wikipedia.org produces the same error.
Doing a search for whitehouse.org returns
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki?search=whitehouse.org
Which currently gives a 403

Adding an extra query does indeed fix the problem
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki?search=whitehouse.orgsource=
or
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki?search=whitehouse.orgsource=foo
both work.

Is it possible to alter the mobile wikipedia search to add a source parameter?

Another use case is the deletion templates, which could use {{REVISIONUSER:1}}

However, bug 23427 comment #13 indicates that retrieving this info is an

  To ask the stupid question, why not send

 It will correct it to the right percent encoding, but it will be very long.
 Just look at my first comment. And that's a relatively short name; it could be

 http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%B1%D8%A9_%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%AC%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%AA_%D9%83%D9%88%D9%86%D8%AA%D9%8A%D8%B3%D8%A9_%D8%B3%D9%86%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%86
 . It usually goes through, but it's terribly ugly. And in an IM program, like,
 GMail chat, sending such a link fills the whole screen with percent signs and
 digits.

I'm not sure this is correct.

All of these can redirect to the ugly encoded version (depending on your
browser) [1]:

* http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/باراك_أوباما
* http://mul.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama:ar
* http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama

So the ugly-ness factor of native-title urls seems irrelevant. The point is the
url that you're sharing communication to others, which neither the second or
third one is what will be in your browser addressbar.

--
Krinkle

[1]: For the record, accessing http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/باراك_أوباما (not
a redirect) in Safari 5 or Firefox 4 does *not* redirect to a url encoded
version, neither does MediaWiki link to urlencoded versions from inline links.
So I could copy/paste http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/باراك_أوباما right from the
browser to here.

The message in MediaWiki:mwe-upwiz-source-ownwork-assert-any-license
is having this problem:
* The parameter can be both a user name and a real name (or possibly any
nonsense that a wiki user typed)
* The message should support GENDER for the user name case.
There is no way to safely do this since a real name of one person may well be a
username of another person. Simply using GENDER and accepting the case user
not found as unspecified gender would not work. Since the upload wizard is
likely meant to be a quite central piece being heavily used in Wikimedia
Commons in the future, we need a workable solution.

There are at least these messages in Extension:
having the same problem:
* MediaWiki:Wm-license-self-multiple-licenses-with-author
* MediaWiki:Wm-license-self-one-license-with-author
* MediaWiki:Wm-license-pd-author-with-author-any-purpose
* MediaWiki:Wm-license-pd-author-with-author-text

It may be worth finding a common solution for them all.

[Bug 25845] Support loading wiki pages through mediaWiki.loader.load()

--- Comment #14 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2011-04-13 15:09:24 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #13)
 Reply to Comment #12:
 Requiring the user to register user scripts as modules seems a bit onerous to
 me. I think we should keep this simple for end users. Otherwise, they are
 going
 to keep using importScript for the rest of time.

 Couldn't we just detect for a parameter of type /(.*)\:(.*)\.(js|css)/i
 and either convert it into an external link or construct a module on behalf of
 the user?

 Then people could easily migrate...
 importScript('User:Foo/bar.js');
 ...to...
 mediaWiki.loader.load('User:Foo/bar.js');

I couldn't agree more that such a short cut would be ideal, and in fact I
believe it should be implemented. However in should not do what
mw.legacy.importScript did (loading index.phptitle=..action=raw). Instead it
would register/load the module on-demand.

ie.
load.php?wikiscripts=User:Foo/bar.jswikistyles=User:Foo/bar.css|MediaWiki:VectorAltenative.css
(or just wikipages=).

It doesn't even depend on bug bug 27561 being fixed. See also comments on bug
27535.

seems fixed now, there were mixed number formats causing the error, some
numbers were 1,234,567 some where 1.234.567 i've cleaned that up, of course it
could also have been fixed in an update in the last month

[Bug 23960] Optional parameters for revision variable magic words

2011-04-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23960

--- Comment #8 from Waldir wal...@email.com 2011-04-13 17:09:18 UTC ---
Well, if any of those actions is performed on a page, these revision magic
words could simply return an error (assuming undefined?) if a parameter larger
than 0 is passed. {{#iferror:}} can then be used to deal with this.

In any case, the simpler use cases for the first revision (speedy deletion for
instance) usually don't involve such complex page manipulation, so the
potential benefit outweighs the edge cases where this would fail.

To reproduce, run update.php twice. On the second run, or possibly on the
first, you get this:

...cpc_author key already set on code_prop_changes table.
Modifying cpc_attrib field of table code_prop_changes...A database query syntax
error has occurred.
The last attempted database query was:
INSERT INTO `updatelog`( ul_key ) VALUES( 'make cpc_attrib varchar' )

from within function DatabaseBase::sourceFile(
/home/catrope/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/CodeReview/archives/codereview-cpc_attrib_varchar.sql
).
Database returned error 1062: Duplicate entry 'make cpc_attrib varchar' for
key 'PRIMARY' (localhost)

Reproduced on trunk, haven't tried REL1_17.

it is highly important for users of all other Wikipedias who often need to
switch to the English Wikipedia (or some other one) if the article in their own

The mobile version of Wikipedia does not include tables of contents, see e.g.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/France. I strongly suggest they should be added.

While, without TOC, it would already difficult to find a specific passage of a
large article on a computer screen, it is almost impossible to do so using a
small smartphone d-pad. This is also because the amount one has to scroll in a
large article can become extremely big due to the small screen width.

note that your suggestion ignores cases of tilde expansion like ~www/ which
would expand to the www user's home directory. You would have to call, This
looks more complex than I initially anticipated:

  if ( substr( $value, 0, 1 ) == '~') {
$home = getenv(HOME);
if ( is_string($home)  $value == ~ ) {
  $value = $home/;
} else if ( is_string( $home )  substr( $value, 0, 2 ) == '~/' ) {
  $value = $home . substr($value, 1);
} else if ( substr( $value, 0, 1 ) == '~'
  strlen( $value )  2
  function_exists( posix_getpwnam ) ) {
  $offset = strpos( $value, / );
  if($offset == false ) {
$offset = strlen($value);
$value = $value/;
  }

  $pwent = posix_getpwnam( substr( $value, 1, $offset - 1 ) );
  if( isset( $pwent['dir'] ) ) {
$value = $pwent['dir'] . substr( $value, $offset );

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Make_userrights_self-sufficient

Massive consensus developed rapidly for deletedhistory, deletedtext, and
browsearchive rights for oversighters and checkusers (54-3 and 56-2
respectively at the time of this writing)

Strong support for move-subpages, suppressredirect, and tboverride rights for
'crats (42-3 at this time)

Deadlocked on the deletedhistory, deletedtext, and browsearchive rights for
'crats (25-19)

Reopened per consensus on three of the four being achieved and the fourth being
stalemated. You could still wait, but at this point I don't think the
consensuses will change.

 So the ugly-ness factor of native-title urls seems irrelevant. The point is
 the
 url that you're sharing communication to others, which neither the second or
 third one is what will be in your browser addressbar.

The link to http://mul.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama:ar can appear somewhere
on the page.

http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%83_%D8%A3%D9%88%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%85%D8%A7

 [1]: For the record, accessing http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/باراك_أوباما (not
 a redirect) in Safari 5 or Firefox 4 does *not* redirect to a url encoded
 version, neither does MediaWiki link to urlencoded versions from inline links.
 So I could copy/paste http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/باراك_أوباما  right from
 the
 browser to here.

Firefox 4 on XP shows it nicely in the address bar, but URD-encodes it when
it's copied and pasted...

Thanks, Brandon. I agree with all your design recommendations. The main
additional point I would make is that it may be more desirable to work towards
an inline editor (adds a row with editable cells right on the page) rather than
a modal pop-up editor.

From a deployment standpoint, can we target having the minimally improved edit
links (per Brandon's spec) and the minimally improved table display (already in
Tim's list)?

For the table, if we have fields like Notes or Descriptions, we'll need a
standardized wiki markup representation so that it can be cleanly manipulated
either through a UI or through wikitext.

Regarding the wiki, I'll go on record as saying that I'd still prefer data.*
because it'll avoid renaming nightmares later (and it's quite likely that we'll
end up overloading the project with additional features given its currently
very narrow scope), but I'll leave it at that to avoid bikeshedding. :-)

Screenshot of private wiki (useskin=Modern, uselang=ksh) section of
Special:Preferences looking pretty garbled.

Suggested solution: Give up trying to have a tabular layout which is not
working anyways, and does serve a decent i18n. Rather make the page layout
linewise where each topic is in a single table cell as wide as the
screen/window, or wrap each topic in a paragraph on its own. If there are
consecutive very similar rows, they line up in the same fashion anyways.

[Bug 28532] New: wfMsgExt() and wfMsgWikiHtml() use $wgOut-parse()

2011-04-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28532

 Bug #: 28532
   Summary: wfMsgExt() and wfMsgWikiHtml() use $wgOut-parse()
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.18-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: critical
  Priority: Low
 Component: Internationalization
AssignedTo: s...@reedyboy.net
ReportedBy: tstarl...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified

wfMsgExt() and wfMsgWikiHtml() use $wgOut-parse(). This is inappropriate and
causes many bugs. For example, at the moment, if you try to view a wiki and
your CentralAuth username is blacklisted, it will throw an exception Empty
$mTitle in OutputPage::parse due to TitleBlacklistHooks::acceptNewUserName()
calling wfMsgWikiHtml().

$wgMessageCache-transform() does this correctly. It uses a separate instance
of the parser, it doesn't get titles or parser options from strange sources
like $wgOut, it doesn't mind if $wgTitle is unset, and it fails gracefully if
it is called re-entrantly.

I suggest MessageCache::transform() be refactored to provide a getParser()
method, which should then be used by a new method MessageCache::parse(),
which should in turn be used by wfMsgWikiHtml() etc. instead of
$wgOut-parse(). The guarding against re-entrant calls should be extended to
cover both entry points.
