Hello,

I wish to have the book creation extension enabled also on mediawiki.org
(isn't it that one [1]?)

Reason:

I want to compile a PDF book for newbie code developers and committers incl.
coding style guide and security advices.

Guess, that many others of you will like that, too.

Tom

Actually, the link should point to

Well the default message should probably point to the FAQ on mw wiki, then
local communities can decide where they want to point it themselves.

FYI, two additional pieces of information:

* It's not specific to en.wp; i.e.
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/Catrope is fine, but
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth/Reedy is not.

* It's not specific to the /username shortcut; i.e.

When the pipe trick is attempted to be used within ref or {{#ref:...}} the
pipe trick fails, and having it functional would be very useful, especially
where one is trying to utilise the pipe trick to deal with links like [[w:link
link|]] (interwiki from within articles) or [[Namespace:...|]] (cross

Ok, on mine, it's the wiki that's betweeen elwikibooks and elwikiquote

Going based on that and http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MergeAccount

It's elwikinews

  [elwikinews]=
  NULL

I've fixed it for me, by visiting the wiki, so it's just a case of handling it
more sensibly

What if people starts to target the user (talk) page of some editor and use
 the
 ArticleFeedback tool for vandalizing it?

How would you use ratings to vandalize anything?

I think it could be problematic, since there are plans[1] to let readers to
provide also free-text comments about the page.

Even if AFT allows you to submit text in addition to numerical ratings, the
widget is still hidden for normal users on pages where it's not supposed to be
active. The vandalism would only be visible to people that used the same trick
to make the AFT widget visible on pages where it's not supposed to show up.

I guess a fitting real-life analogy would be vandalizing a billboard using
invisible ink.

--- Comment #1 from Markus Krötzsch mar...@semantic-mediawiki.org 2011-06-01

This is not a bug. SMWDIProperty objects are initialized by a property key.
This key can have two forms: either it is the MediaWiki DBkey of a property
page (for user-defined properties), or it is the key for a registered special
property of SMW (a string starting with _).

If you want to create SMWDIProperty objects from a user-provided label, or from
a text that might be the (normalized) label of a special property (and you are
not sure), then you should use the SMWDIProperty::newFromUserLabel(). Overall,
you should always be able to generate a suitable SMWDIProperty for the store
call in one line.

SMWDIProperty could implement additional checks to throw exception when the
key has a space in it, but this would take additional time that we might
rather want to safe there. General clean-up and best effort input
interpretation on the other hand is not meant to happen in DI classes but in
the according DVs. Using a DV is usually the best solution when user input is
processed (with all its possible messiness, e.g. leading spaces).

usually, these warnings do make sense. And there are many. They often
 indicate,
that a spurious , or ; can break or broke the process flow somehow. I
 don't
 like css or js warnings.

This is part of a hack we use to apply certain CSS rules only on IE. The rule
looks something like foo: bar !ie; . In all non-IE browsers (and IE 8 and
higher), if an exclamation mark (!) is not followed by 'important', the rule is
considered invalid and ignored (and a warning thrown, apparently; these are the
warnings you're seeing). IE 7 and below, on the other hand, don't care and just
apply these rules anyway.

Sometimes, we use CSS hacks that cause warnings in compliant browsers. That's a
fact of life, and we're not gonna spend a lot of time trying to keep warning
logs clean.

Well... People could rate a user massively ([[Cyber-bullying]]?) as not being
Trustworthy so that its name is displayed in (automatically generated)
special pages such as
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Special:ArticleFeedback
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikibooks/pt/w/index.php?title=Especial%3ARatedPagesratingtier=1namespace=0ratingtag=reliabilityuselang=en
and others which could be created in the future...

I think such pages could make these unwanted ratings to become visible, and
considering that the ratings in the userpage are not visible to normal users,
after a large amount of bad ratings is achieved, it would be difficult to
revert.

Very well. Then I have only two questions:
 1) Will these renamings be logged anywhere to let us handle them?
 2) Am I supposed to do anything else if the community has no objections for
 now?

Generally the renames will be listed on the bug report after the request is
done (or at least that's what has happened for other similar requests). If the
community has no objections, then there is nothing else you have to do. Note,
that sometimes these requests take a little while to fulfill, as often the
shell users wait until there are several shell requests, and then do them all
at once.

After talking with someone on #wiktionary, I had a great idea for an
extension: a MediaWiki implementation of the dict protocol
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DICT

I think this would involve writing an API client that could listen on
port 2628 for dict queries, ask mediawiki to fulfill the request, and
then send a reply to the dict client. Really, just a SMOP. ;)

It appears that this protocol expects responses in text/plain (unless OPTION
MIME is used, in which case it could have multiple types, but the impression i
get [after not very much reading, so could be wrong] is dict servers should
support plain text)

Converting wiktionary definitions to plain text is not exactly trivial.

I was trying to create a custom account creation system to link up to the APS
Wikipedia Initiative:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogintype=signupcampaign=apswi

I created three customized pages:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-apswi-welcomecreation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-apswi-signupend
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Custumusertemplate-apswi-fancycaptcha-createaccount

The first two work, replacing the normal MediaWiki:Welcomecreation and
MediaWiki:Signupend messages. But the third does not affect the message that
is normally at MediaWiki:Fancycaptcha-createaccount.

Also, it would be helpful to have a list of *all* the messages that can be
customized through this extension.

[Bug 4745] Section edit conflict expands edit box to entire article

--- Comment #12 from Zwiebelleder onionleat...@gmail.com 2011-06-01 18:15:00

This problem can be responsible for deleting comments if there is a conflict
with a second bug: A not recognized edit conflict. If you're doing an edit on
the edit conflict page, you're editing not a section but the entire article.
While editing one more edit conflict can happen with another user editing only
a section. Sometimes it happens that MediaWiki don't recognize an edit
conflicts. If so, than it could happen that the (meanwhile saved) edits from
the other user could be overwritten with the old version of page in the edit
conflict page and the edits getting lost.

So it happens today:
http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Auskunftdiff=nextoldid=89518222

Previous I had three edit conflicts so that I was editing on the edit conflict
page. Meanwhile a user had saved another comment and so he was creating my
fourth edit conflict. But MediaWiki didn't recognize this. So as I was saving
my new edited edit conflict page, and the edit of the other user (in another
section) gets lost.

This problem could be solved by two solutions:
1. If the edit conflict page shows only the relevant sections
or
2. If edit conflicts would be solved more reliable (is there a bug report for
unresolved edit conflicts?).

It looks like in r61352 with the big refactor, the PhpHttpRequest

allowing 'http'.

This of course means that it doesn't handle 'https' URLs, which well is
kind of lame.

Security checks added in r67684 disable redirect-following for HTTP requests
when using the CURL backend if the CURL version is an older version known to
improperly validate the redirects.

Since we have code to follow HTTP redirects in PhpHttpRequest already, it ought
to be simple to just bump some of the logic up a level and run that above the
abstraction layer, using it for CurlHttpRequest as well rather than using the
CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION option.

This would allow our own protocol security checks to be applied consistently at
all times, and could also allow for a callback, eg for the caller to apply
their own domain checks at each stage.

Is the problem that it *should* output colors on Windows but doesn't (fails to
detect support - false negative) or that it *should not* output colors on
Windows but does (fails to detect lack of support - false positive)?

There was only one, so I expanded that entry to give more detailed info.

Also, the second page has half-completed styling, which is very weird. Are
there any errors in the console tab?

Not that I remember. But I'll know for sure when it happens again =)

Did a local test adding page 'HАGGER?' (with \xd0\x90) to my watchlist in raw
DB and removing it through 'edit watchlist', seemed to work fine on trunk.

Conceivable that something with blacklists is breaking it somewhere along the
line, but it ought not to.

Interesting. So this title has a character that looks like an A but isn't one,
and ends in a question mark. The same issue affects now-invalid main namespace
titles as WP:FOO as well; generally it should be possible to remove invalid
titles from your watchlist as opposed to having them stuck forever :)

Could you (reporter) tell us what your username is and on which wiki you're
seeing this mysterious HAGGER title? That'll allow me to see what your
watchlist looks like in the database, which will help debugging.

Reproducing and testing this locally should be easy; just copy the bad
watchlist row from Wikipedia to the local database and try to remove the
watchlist entry through the UI.

[Bug 29233] New: db failures in the 'read-only' dbs cause site to fail

2011-06-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29233

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 29233
Summary: db failures in the 'read-only' dbs cause site to fail
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Database
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ct...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified

Failure from reading from replicated database could bring down the rest of the
site.

When the application tries to read a 'failed' db, it should catch the exception
(error 2003?) and redirects it to another db. Instead, today, the application
hangs, resulting in a site failure.

[Bug 11374] Different diff-colors no to discriminate red-green color blinds

--- Comment #13 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2011-06-01 20:05:56 UTC ---
The CSS hooks MediaWiki provides are flexible enough to change this entirely to
your liking.

There are numerous mini Gadgets in the wiki land to change it to yellow-blue
for example. Check [[Special:Preferences]] - Gadgets and see if it's listed.

Otherwise, modify your User:Accountname/common.css wiki page and add css rules
to your liking.

I think the latter isn't very attractive for non-tech users, but it's a way to
experiment with the css. Once you're done ask an administrator on your wiki to
create a gadget that anyone can enable with a single click.

ie.

* MediaWiki:Gadget-diffGreenBlue
Change the difference view highlighting to green-blue colouring (instead of
red/green)

* MediaWiki:Gadget-diffGreenBlue.css
td.diff-addedline { background: #d8e4f6;  }
td.diff-deletedline { background: #e4f6d8; }
.diffchange { color: inherit; }
td.diff-addedline .diffchange { background: #b0c0f0; }
td.diff-deletedline .diffchange { background: #b0e897; }

* MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition
*diffGreenBlue|diffGreenBlue.css

And that's it. I've enabled it on Wikimedia Commons and Meta-Wiki for now. Feel
free to export/import, enable or embed this as you like.

I'm marking this WONTFIX per BugTriage meeting. We probably don't want to
change the default green/red which is too known and grown into the interwebs.

The problem isn't that yellow and green are hard to tell apart, but that the
red text is hard to see against the yellow and green backgrounds.

A sane default should be *legible* for all readers.

Note, in the log excerpt, the time that the user was blocked at is localized
 to
whatever timezone is set in your preferences.

You can see the local time in the upper right of the screenshots. But I'll
test again after verifying that the preferences is correct. The preferences
may have been off by an hour, but nothing like the 2-3 hours the screenshots
show.

How about we make the .diffchange bold black (like the french fix[1] does) but
keep the yellow/green backgrounds. Would that solve the issue ?

[Bug 29234] New: SUL doesn't prevent someone creating a new account with an already unified name

2011-06-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29234

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 29234
Summary: SUL doesn't prevent someone creating a new account
with an already unified name
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: CentralAuth
AssignedTo: vasi...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: bawolff...@gmail.com
CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified

Appearently somehow an unattached account was created with my username
(bawolff) on tawiki ( http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php?user=Bawolff ,
http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:ListUsers/bawolff?uselang=enlimit=1 ) My
understanding is that CentralAuth should prevent this from happening once an
account is unified.

The account appears to be someone totally different from me (my password
doesn't work with it), it was created last month, which is several years after
I unified my account. The account does not appear in the new user log (
http://ta.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E0%AE%9A%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%B1%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%81%3ALogtype=user=Bawolffpage=year=month=-1uselang=en
)

Expected behaviour: CentralAuth prevents other people from registering accounts
that conflict with a unified account name.
