[Bug 29357] New: CategoryTree should have built-in localizable support for pretty Categorytree-member-num

2011-06-12 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29357

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 29357
   Summary: CategoryTree should have built-in localizable support
for pretty Categorytree-member-num
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Keywords: i18n
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: CategoryTree
AssignedTo: brightb...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il
Classification: Unclassified

Many Wikipedias customized MediaWiki:Categorytree-member-num to show the number
of sub-categories, pages and files in the parentheses after the category name,
something like (3 C, 5 P, 1 F). Even for English this requires rather weird
parser function tricks to make the comma appear in the correct places, and
other languages need even stranger tricks - for example in Hebrew one comes
after the noun, but other numbers come before it, so i had to use #switch and
jump through even more hoops to get the comma appear correctly.

I checked the 20 largest Wikipedias and MediaWiki:Categorytree-member-num was
customized in all of them in much the same way. Since there apparently is
demand for this feature and the eventual functionality is quite the same
everywhere, it should be done this way:

1. There should be abbreviated localizable messages for C, P and F (category,
page, file), something like:
categorytree-category-count-short: {{PLURAL:$1|1 C|$1 C}}
categorytree-page-count-short: {{PLURAL:$1|1 P|$1 P}}
categorytree-file-count-short: {{PLURAL:$1|1 F|$1 F}}

2. Then after the category name all the non-zero values can be shown, joined by
a comma on the extension code level.

3. If all the values are zeroes, the word empty should be shown. (There
should be another localizable message for this.)

I didn't find any project that implemented this differently, but if there is
such a project, it can keep using Categorytree-member-num.

Oh sorry I was wrong. These numbers on
http://pdc.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:!Hauptkategorie displays subcats only.
But is there a way to display the number of the contained articles too like in
http://pdc.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:!Hauptkategorie or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Contents ?

There was a suggestion that this would be better if put on the server, so here
I am, back again to see if this can be made to work. I had a thought that
rather than just change everything for everyone, perhaps this could be added to
the Watchlist preferences tab as an option to turn on or to leave off?

[Bug 29337] SMW 1.5.6 not working with rdfapi-php

--- Comment #1 from Markus Krötzsch mar...@semantic-mediawiki.org 2011-06-12
10:42:39 UTC ---
From SMW 1.6 on, the special support for RAP is discontinued in favor of a
general RDF store support that works with all RDF stores that support SPARQL
and SPARQL update. You may want to try out this new feature with the current
SVN version (still slightly unstable) by adding the following to your
LocalSettings:

smwgDefaultStore = 'SMWSparqlStore';
$smwgSparqlDatabase = 'SMWSparqlDatabase';
$smwgSparqlQueryEndpoint = 'http://localhost:8080/sparql/';
$smwgSparqlUpdateEndpoint = 'http://localhost:8080/update/';
$smwgSparqlDataEndpoint = 'http://localhost:8080/data/';

where the last three URLs are the locations of the query, update, and POST
endpoints of your RDF store. If there are problems with POST, you can also set

$smwgSparqlDataEndpoint = '';

to disable its use (the all updates will happen via SPARQL Update, and the
older POST protocol will not be used). There is also a special PHP binding for
4Store, in case you would like to use this:

$smwgSparqlDatabase = 'SMWSparqlDatabase4Store';

Other similar special bindings for adjusting the generic support to specific
stores when needed could be added. Feature requests can be posted here.

Since the code that the above bug refers to has already vanished in the
development version, we will not fix it anymore. However, it seems strange that
a new problem should occur there given that the RAP code in SMW has been
unchanged for a very long time.

Gadgets load before Mediawiki:Common.js, but sometimes it is necessary for a
gadget to load after the site js. There should be a way to specify in
Mediawiki:Gadgets-definition that a gadget is dependent on site js. (Note that
[ResourceLoader|dependencies=site] does not do this, it causes a duplicate of
site js to run, causing everything in site js to run twice.)

This is a follow up to the following:
* Bug 27069 - Define $wgUploadNavigationUrl for ptwikibooks

I noticed that the links to missing files still do not point to Commons, and I
didn't find any message (on [[Special:AllMessages]]) which I could use locally
to point these uploads to Commons. Then I found
* Bug 18885 - Red links for media files do not support shared repositories
which was fixed by introduction of the [[mw:$wgUploadMissingFileUrl]] variable
(see r69997).

So, could you set that variable to point the red links of our files to Commons?
If I understood correctly, it is enough to copy the same url which is in use at
http://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=InitialiseSettings.php
i.e., 'http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload/pt?uselang=pt'

Bug 28840 is now marked as fixed. What does that make the current status of
1.17? Waiting for someone to run the script? Or are there bugs that people know
about but aren't documented here?

Keep up the good work all :)

I was trying to look at MobileFrontend today, but i was getting timeouts
because the device parser needs to work through the WURFL database the first
time it runs I suspect. On my wiki that was continuously failing due to
max_execution_time.

Such an intensive job should probably be thrown on the job queue.

 but sometimes it is necessary for a gadget to load after the site js.

Could you provide a real-world example or usecase ?

[Bug 29365] New: WikiEditor: Toolbar should be further from edit form

Classification: Unclassified

Created attachment 8644
  -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=8644
comparison of old and new toolbars

Several buttons on the edit toolbar insert placeholder text when clicked. This
placeholder text is often left in the articles.

On en.wikipedia, one can search for Bold text, File:Example.jpg and other
such strings and find instances where this has happened. Many are clearly
vandalism, but others appear to be legitimate edits save for this unwanted
string.

The conclusion is that users are clicking the toolbar buttons by accident, and
not realizing that the placeholder text has been added to the page.

Since the toolbar is flush with the top of the edit form, a slight misclick
when trying to select text at the top of the form can click a toolbar button
instead. When I first recognized this issue on en.wikipedia, I asked for the
local CSS to be changed to add a gap between the toolbar itself and the edit
form, to reduce the likelihood of accidentally clicking the buttons, which may
have helped somewhat.

When the new toolbar was introduced this change was lost. I suggest the same
thing is done with the new toolbar, and it might as well be done by default in
the extension itself rather than as customization on en.wikipedia only.

I have attached screenshots of the old and new toolbars as displayed on
en.wikipedia; note the gap below the old toolbar.
