[Bug 29994] New: Dozens of licenses and flickr review requests being added by UW to some uploads

 Bug #: 29994
Summary: Dozens of licenses and flickr review requests being
added by UW to some uploads
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: UploadWizard
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: dar...@spamcop.net
CC: asha...@wikimedia.org, ne...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified

Please check all uploads done using UW in the following list:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Sujoy

Besides apparently adding all licenses available in UW to the images, it added
as well dozens of Flickr review requests. I've been noticing very occasionally
this kind of occurrence in the UW, but I've never seen so many together and
with so many licenses and flickreview marks.

Example:

[Bug 25337] MediaWiki:Useractivity-award should support GENDER

2011-07-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25337

06:21:22 UTC ---
The fix for this bug seems rather simple, but sadly it isn't so. In my testing,
I moved the bolding and link rendering from $1 to the useractivity-award
message and changed wfMsg to wfMsgExt with the parse option and passed
$row->sg_user_name as $1 to the message.
It introduced not one but two new bugs: annoying tags that messed with the
display in a place where they weren't supposed to be and the Parser's strip
marked (UNIQ string) was exposed when using the siteactivity parser hook.

"referral" in this context means referring a user to the wiki via a specialized
signup link, such as
http://example.com/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&type=signup&referral=Foo.
If the referred user signs up via this link, the referrer (User:Foo, in this
example) may be awarded some points as a reward (if set so in the site
configuration); the amount of points is specified in
$wgUserStatsPointValues['referral_complete'].

For the referral stuff to work properly, you need at least one separate
extension, [[mw:Extension:NewSignupPage]] (based on the old LoginReg extension)
to add the hidden referral field to the signup form.
In order to generate and mail out these specialized signup links, you should
use the InviteContacts extension (see [[mw:Special:Code/MediaWiki/84110]]), but
admittedly that extension is (still) a work-in-progress.

[Bug 29153] Pages loading without formatting too often

2011-07-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29153

--- Comment #42 from Asher Feldman 2011-07-21 02:31:55
UTC ---
We now have a build of varnish 3.0 with a udp logging daemon that should be
transparently compatible with our squid log collection infrastructure. There
are some VCL language changes in 3.0 and the bits/geo-ip vcl needs porting and
testing before bits will be upgraded. Mobile is getting varnish 3.0 first in
the next week or two, then bits testing can begin.

I performed a days worth of local sampling internally on one of the bits
varnish servers last week however and found rare 503's caused by first byte
timeouts from the backend apache's (1:100 requests or less.) I filtered out
404's however due to the huge amount of legitimate ones being served due to
malformed requests, bots, and broken bits installed on some wikis. I did just
catch an interesting 404 on sq67 however, that was requested by Firefox 3.6.18

The RxURL listed is :
http://bits.wikimedia.org/en.wikipedia.org/load.php?debug=false&lang=en&modules=mediawiki%21legacy%21commonPrint%7Cmediawiki%21legacy%21shared%7Cskins%21vector&only=styles&skin=vector

That's a good URL except, the RxURL field doesn't contain the protocol or host
portion of the url - this means it was a request for :
http://bits.wikimedia.org/http://bits.wikimedia.org/en.wikipedia.org/load.php?debug=false&lang=en&modules=mediawiki%21legacy%21commonPrint%7Cmediawiki%21legacy%21shared%7Cskins%21vector&only=styles&skin=vector

Not something I'd expect a 3.6 build of firefox to do - this could be an
occasional bug in page rendering but it could also be due to factors outside of
our control. I'm going to dig around further to see if I can find a load.php
404's that's been properly requested.

Discovered on wikitech, when the server hostname is configured with a relative
protocol, the mails sent are broken.

It should either default to a configuration variable, a user preference or
whatever the request triggering the mail had as protocol.

The problem with the latter is that it results in inconsistent e-mail (ie. user
John get's mixed urls in his emails, some http some https one of which he is
mostly likely not logged in at)

I was visiting

just now and it loaded without styles. I investigated a bit and it was a
getting a 404 from this URL:
.

It was a standard "Not Found" 404 error message. I tried a few more times via
the browser and curl and then it fixed itself, returning the appropriate CSS.

I don't think this is a issue related to the secure server. What's the status
of logging frequency of HTTP codes other than 200?

Indeed this seems like an undesirable change to make on the default buttons
which are *exactly* intended to produce sample text that's selected so your
typing removes it.

Further, r82343 was never actually functional to begin with... It's been
reverted in r92715.

The r82308 changes are still in, so you can pass the extra parameter on the JS
side for your custom toolbar items, but the old classic toolbar is being phased
out for WikiEditor anyway.

Some ideas from a coworker:

The right way might be to go very explicit and use
http://schema.org/CreativeWork on the history page, with a URL pointing back to
the original article, and pointers to all the authors. And then put a
rel=author link to the history page from the article (the target page describes
the authors, after all). Or put a rel=alternate link to the history page with a
suitable type (it's an alternate representation of the document: its history).

While we are on accessibility btw. It's probably even worse for blind users
with screenreaders. With all the divs and javascript.click()'s for the various
fields. But we have that issue throughout more of our new JS tools, like much
of the toolbar for instance. There should already be a ticket on that
somewhere.

Matthew, one of the Wikimedia storytellers, just brought this to my attention
as well. Regardless of what else is done, it'd be good to extend the in-page
title uniqueness check to examine the other titles in the current upload.

It's actually kinda funny that it checks for already-used titles in a remote
database, but doesn't do this much simpler thing. :)

Brandon, can you do a design review check on this? Some of the grays do look

stars and the text under them don't seem to be.

The clickable things darken a bit on mouseover; perhaps darkening the labels

The contrast differences are VERY small between background and 'unselected

Sounds like the sort of thing that would happen if the page load is slow and
you click the save page button more than once. Does this occur if you're
careful to click save page only once? Does it occur if you make a test edit
including a subst:ed template, but no signature? Does it occur consistently?
What wiki does this occur on, what browser are you using, and do you have any
custom javascript?

Note that if this occurs when the form is actually submitted twice (for any
reason), this is a dupe of bug 17368. If this occurs even if the form is only
submitted once, then something strange is happening.

The signature script () appears to cause the page trouble and the software
tries to double-post on my system often. Fortunatly the script itself changes
on the talk pages so it defaults to a edit conflict error. However, that means
I don't default back to the main talk page as I should, but to the edit talk
page and have to check each time to make certain it was just that and not a
true edit conflict with another user.

[Bug 29989] New: MW should provide better messages if the search terms contains part of the "search syntax"

Status: NEW
  Severity: normal

Consider the following examples
1) "two or three words"
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=%22two+or+three+words%22&fulltext=Search
The page [["two or three words"]] doesn't exists and MW shows the message

There were no results matching the query.
Create the page ""two or three words"" on this wiki!

Since the quotes have a special meaning when used among the search terms, i.e.
they are part of the "search syntax", the messages should be more
contextualized. For example, if we search for "some words on Google Search
Engine", we will get:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22some+words+on+Google+Search+Engine%22

No results found for "some words on Google Search Engine".
Results for some words on Google Search Engine (without quotes):
...

2) intitle:Another example
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=intitle%3Aanother+example&fulltext=Search

There were no results matching the query.
Create the page "Intitle:another example" on this wiki!

the string "intitle" also has a special meaning, so when the user uses it, and
get no results, MW could provide some indication that by dropping that term
there could be some result.

The same idea applies to other strings having special meanings, such as
"prefix" and symbols like "-" which is used to exclude some of the possible
results.

On the other hand, if I click on "Search" button again, some results are

[Bug 29988] New: Category, template, and form semantic metadata needed automatically for each page that uses them

2011-07-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29988

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 29988
Summary: Category, template, and form semantic metadata needed
automatically for each page that uses them
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Semantic MediaWiki
AssignedTo: mar...@semantic-mediawiki.org
ReportedBy: fastgoldf...@gmail.com
CC: jeroen_ded...@yahoo.com
Classification: Unclassified

We already get property data in the factbox, which is very handy for
developing, maintaining, and using a semantic mediawiki. All that remains to be
added is information about categories, templates, and forms that are used for
the page. Likewise, categories, templates, and forms could also have
information about which of those three things go into defining them (like if a
template is created by a form, or if a category is contained in a template).

I have been able to manually add these features to this page (user Demo, pass
dedauw):

http://www.coincompendium.com/wiki/index.php/File:1989GWWcto.jpg

Wiki developers, maintainers, and users can easily access the categories,
templates, and forms that go into creating that page, all in place. In
addition, I'm able to query the semantic data to display on the template page
which pages are using the template:

http://www.coincompendium.com/wiki/index.php/Template:Image

The nature of these things makes it straightforward to add them manually once,
and then use them unlimited numbers of times. However, if the properties
"Category", "Template", and "Form" were part of the metadata of each page, they
could be displayed in the factbox that already handles other properties.

Also, my factboxes do not show special metadata properties like the
"Modification date" property that currently exists - this should be at least
optional, if not the default).

Backend timeout. During high load times, it can take more time than the current
timeout (6s? 10s?) to actually fetch the results, so you get zero results.
Reloading the page a couple of times you eventually give you the results.

1) Go to [[Main Page]]
2) Type in the search box something like:

 Just a test

3) Press ENTER, and you will be taken to the page
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=Just+a+test
4) Click in the link "Help and Project pages" which takes you to
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=Just%20a%20test&fulltext=Search&ns4=1&ns12=1&redirs=0
which shows "Results 1–20 of 21,183 for Just a test"
5) Click in the link to show "500" items (in the bottom of the page)

View (previous 20 | next 20) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | [[500]])

This will take you to
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&ns4=1&ns12=1&redirs=1&search=Just+a+test&limit=500&offset=0
which shows "There were no results matching the query."

This is very weird because when the user clicks on "500" it expects to see
[[more results]], not [[less]] (and certainly not [[no results at all]])

Why is this happening?

Brion: I see your point about security. Until such time that Wikipedia goes

contract with its user: delivering articles over http unless the user has
logged in and checked the "everything SSL" checkbox. Seem reasonable?

Using protocol-relative links doesn't have any effect on case 1) since those
links are always on the local protocol/host anyway.

Proper 'fix' for that is of course to always use SSL for all logged-in sessions
at all times, which is much safer.

We're already working on making URLs in MediaWiki protocol-relative as much as
possible. Basically, if you set $wgServer = '//wiki.example.com'; in trunk as

This patch ended up being thrown out but a similar adjustment was done in

extensions combined but given that it works for what we need right now it isn't

Created attachment 8806

SecureLoginPage.php

The SSL login feature enabled by $wgSecureLogin produces pages that can be
confusing to users. Here are several use cases that happen when
$wgSecureLogin=true.

1. User clicks "Log in". On the login page (which is https), the user does not
log in, but clicks another link on the page such as "Recent changes". This link
is also https. Suddenly the user is viewing the wiki via SSL, when this might
never have been the user's intention.

2. User clicks "Log in". The logo image, which was set by a sysadmin via
$wgLogo to be "http://some.other.site/myfile.jpg";, gets served over http. The
browser (IE) pops up a warning, "Do you want to view only the webpage content
that was delivered securely?" The user gets confused or scared by the popup.

Several years ago I published a SecureUserLogin extension in my O'Reilly
"MediaWiki" book. It avoids problem 1 by automatically switching from https to
http when serving pages other than the login page. (Unless the user wants a
totally SSL session.) I believe MediaWiki should do similarly.

I will attach a copy of the extension in case it's useful to you.

Brion, I'm not sure this is was caused by the recent changes, but a user
reported the following on English Wikisource:

I may be wrong, but I assume that it is this fix that may have introduced a
minor glitch into Proofread Page: until a few days ago, when in "zoom" mode,
the mouse cursor changed to crosshairs, while "scroll" mode was the normal
arrow. Now it is the arrow in both modes, which is an inconvenience.

Are you sure it will MAINLY and JUST do that? I don't think so.

What it will mainly do is to increase the likelihood that something that
currently does not work will properly be parsed. Those few things that aren't
whole and unique links and will happen to get thrown in there will *still* not
work, as they currently don't. But those many that *are* what is expected will
do.

Of course, this proposal is intended to be done only for namespaces- and
pagenames-related functions.

There's only one letter which needs changing in the code. No problems occur
with using ВЦ: as the alias, but it's incorrect and doesn't match existing
shortcuts. Please, do this small change so that we could ask additional
questions in case something goes wrong.

This is an issue with other things as well, such as the redirect after
submitting the login form: you log in over https, and after logging you in MW
will happily send you to http.

[Bug 29972] Malformed header errors with the new installer

This output line comes from convertLinks, which is a Maintenance subclass...

...it does the output with its $this->output() method, which on Maintenance
looks like it tries to output *directly* to stdout, instead of a generic
'print' or 'echo'.

It's possible that this is interfering with output & header buffering,
especially if this is a PHP-as-CGI or FastCGI setup.

The link URL, textual name, and icon URL are set at install time by the
installer, either from its own predefined list or from the data returned from
the Creative Commons license picker web thingy.

Per code comments, it looks pretty clear by definition that the two must be set
together:

/**
 * If either $wgRightsUrl or $wgRightsPage is specified then this variable
gives the text for the link.
 * If using $wgRightsUrl then this value must be specified. If using
$wgRightsPage then the name of the
 * page will also be used as the link if this variable is not set.

$wgRightsText = null;

I'd say if this needs to be changed, just use a local relative link with the
path only. It'll be just as accurate, smaller in output, and slightly more
likely to be supported by clients doing discovery.

The redirect target appears to be built with WebRequest::getFullRequestURL()
which uses $wgServer, which in this case I think ought to be the
protocol-relative link.

This then doesn't seem to get expanded further, so it might be nginx (the https
proxies) that are expanding it to http:// or else the caches or?

We do though output a 301 here which is meant to be cacheable; so if that
happens below the cache layer we could also be caching things incorrectly.

I assume the link you're clicking is the https://office.wikimedia.org/ link...
I can confirm the behavior you're seeing in Firefox 5/Linux. :(

Hitting the "/" generic root page will end up sending a redirect to the
canonical location of the main page; sounds like either MediaWiki's incorrectly
serving out the HTTP redirect, or it's getting incorrectly cached.

Looks like I can repro with another redirection, using a non-canonical encoding
of the title:

https://office.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main%20Page

also gets redirected to:

http://office.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

HTTP response headers as seen in Firebug on a redir:

Servernginx/0.7.65

Via1.1 sq62.wikimedia.org:3128 (squid/2.7.STABLE7), 1.0
sq40.wikimedia.org:80 (squid/2.7.STABLE7)

it looks like the redirect is built fresh, not just cached at least in this
case, but it's getting built out with the HTTP form. Either MediaWiki is
formatting the Location: URL as HTTP, or the proxies in front of it are
expanding it from protocol-relative and doing so as http.

The documentation for configuring WikiLove is here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikiLove#Custom_configuration

The local configuration page is here:
http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:WikiLove.js

I would consider the minimum requirement to be replacing all the English
messages with Hindi. What would be nice, though, is if the items are replaced
with whatever items are commonly used as gifts on the Hindi Wiki, as Casey said
above. The only reason the English Wikipedia has cheeseburgers and kittens in
their WikiLove is because those are the items that people were already using as
virtual gifts on the project. The items should be tailored to the culture of
the wiki.

[Bug 29984] New: SocialProfile needs to be ported to ResourceLoader

2011-07-20 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29984

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 29984
Summary: SocialProfile needs to be ported to ResourceLoader
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
   URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SocialProfile/
Roadmap
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: SocialProfile
AssignedTo: krinklem...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: j...@countervandalism.net
Classification: Unclassified

Current trunk version of SocialProfile has been tested and developed against
MediaWiki 1.16 and it seems that it will work only on 1.16 at the moment; it
appears quite broken on current trunk version of MediaWiki (1.19alpha).

I've tried porting SocialProfile to use ResourceLoader a few times now and the
JS is always giving me a headache. I've rewritten
SocialProfile/UserGifts/UserGifts.js to be more object-oriented, but the way
its functions are (currently) used seems to be problematic when combined with
the ResourceLoader; see SocialProfile/UserGifts/SpecialGiveGift.php, lines 244,
313 and 372.

I'd like to retain backwards compatibility with MediaWiki 1.16 for the time
being, as I need to deploy SocialProfile on some ShoutWiki sites, which still
run 1.16.

SystemGifts, UserActivity, UserStats and UserWelcome have only CSS files;
UserSystemMessages has no CSS nor JS and the remaining "modules" (UserBoard,
UserGifts, UserProfile, UserRelationship and UserStatus) have both CSS and JS
files.

Assigning to Krinkle as per Reedy's suggestion on #mediawiki:

08:02 < ashley> to whom might I assign a ResourceLoader-related bug?
specifically, my SocialProfile extension appears to be rather...broken in
current trunk (and probably for 1.17+ in general) and it needs to be ported to
use RL (retaining backwards compat w/ 1.16) but jQuery and RL are driving me
crazy :-/
08:02 < Reedy> ashley, Roan, Trevor or maybe Krinkle
