(In reply to comment #8)
EditPage.php has some checks for edit conflicts. The comment at that place
 is:

Suppress edit conflict with self, except for section edits where merging is
 required.

Bug 28720 requests to remove that behaviour and has more background.

The current behaviour is correct, if nothing else because the text on the right
is what you'd get by submitting, i.e. the new stored text (conflicting with
your edit), loaded in the edit area.
You have to manually recover your edits from the text at the bottom, so the
diff correctly shows the situation and what needs fixing.

[Bug 45765] New: Default security level for adding the search engine to Firefox

2013-03-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45765

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 45765
Summary: Default security level for adding the search engine to
Firefox
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: wmf-deployment
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Site requests
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: lit...@yahoo.fr
CC: benap...@gmail.com, dereck...@espace-win.org,
wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org,
wikimedia.b...@snowolf.eu
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

I'm not sure I am posting at the right place...

I use the https connection mode to frwiki. However, the default search engine
which can be identified and added to the list of search engines in Firefox,
alongside with duckduckgo, yahoo, etc (sorry, I use the french version of the
browser, and can only guess the english names of the functionalities...) only
sends results on the http connection mode -not secured.

This means, for example, that I have to manually edit the address bar of my
browser to replace http with https.

Would it be possible either to:
* systematically forcing the search engine to perform a request on https
* or configuring this search engine addition (I don't know how it works on
Firefox) so that when added from https, then it performs search on https and
similarly from the http version of the sites?

Thank you!

This is something that has to be done at the Firefox side of things, I remember
it was discussed before but was held off because the secure cluster was new and
hadn't been put though its paces yet.

Ryan can probably give a better update.

--- Comment #2 from Sam Reed (reedy) s...@reedyboy.net ---
You might be interested in installing https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere - it
automatically moves you onto the HTTPS versions of websites as they are
available and known about.

In Chrome, going to Tools - Settings and pressing the Manage Search Engines,
you can easily change protocols and links used by specific search engines. I
presumed Firefox would have something similar, but at first glance it doesn't.
Googling seems to suggest something like
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/organize-search-engines/ would
allow you to modify them.

[Bug 980] Automatical merge of conflicting non-section edits to different sections

Summary|edit conflict handling |Automatical merge of
   |should offer *partial* |conflicting non-section
   |merges where a full merge |edits to different sections
   |is impossible |

--- Comment #2 from Nemo federicol...@tiscali.it ---
(In reply to comment #0)
It should be easy to merge differences when two different sections were
 edited,
and not too much harder when two different paragraphs in the same section
 were
edited (this assumes that neither of the two concurrent edits rearranged
 sections or paragraphs).

So this bug is about edits to different sections...

For changes to different sentences within the same
paragaph, it's probably possible to do an automatic merge, but probably not
advisable; however, we'd still want an algorithm to shrink the set of
 contiguous
sentences or words forming the MERGE-CONFLICT to the smallest acceptable
 length.

The merger of the rearrangement or sections or paragraphs is probably
 something
we'd probably have to leave as an entirely manual process.

...and all the rest is no good.

(In reply to comment #1)
As of version 1.3.0 (I think; a while ago, anyway) the software *does*
 silently
merge many edit conflicts. The conflict screen now only comes up where a
complete automatic merger is not possible.

So the original summary of this bug, CVS/SVN like merging for concurrent
edits or edit conflict handling should offer *partial* merges where a full
merge is impossible, is a WORKSFORME, and per above I'm changing it to
Automatical merge of conflicting non-section edits to different sections.

[...] Perhaps it would be better to just say the software has merged
some of your changes into the version shown in the upper box, but was unable
 to
 do so for others ...

Not needed: conflicts are suppressed/merged silently when possible (cf. bug
28720).

and then have the same screen as usual, but with the
 upper
textarea (currently the current text of the article) already containing
 those
changes which could be automatically merged.

+1

The diff would also show only
 those
un-merged changes (i.e. it would be a diff between the content in the two
textareas). Note that this shouldn't mean an automatic extra edit going
 through
to do the partial merge, but it would mean that the default text if the user
submitted without changing anything would write the partial merge to the DB
[because the text written is whatever's in the upper textarea].

Right. This would be consistent with normal edit conflict handling.

I created the article and opened an edit window in which i added text while
editing the page. Finally i deleted it and sent that edit, which thus had the
edit parameters referring to the oldest version:
 wpStartTime: 20070713204135
 wpEditTime: 20070713204110
 wpScrollTop: 106272

However, insted of confirmrecreate i got an editconflict with the
 MediaWiki:Missingarticle content!

I don't understand the dynamics of the incident here.

Didn't the slave still know it was deleted? Has Missingarticle higher
 priority
over confirmrecreate? Whatever, the behaviour is inconsistent.

PD: Going back and resending got it right, but with the resend delay and
 likely
being different server slave, not too significant.

This would make it look a bit like bug 42163.

Hmm, I have no idea if this is something in the WIkiEditor codebase or some
server configuration based on language.

[Bug 45766] New: [TUX] Expired edit token is not refreshed

2013-03-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45766

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 45766
Summary: [TUX] Expired edit token is not refreshed
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Translate
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: niklas.laxst...@gmail.com
CC: asha...@wikimedia.org, niklas.laxst...@gmail.com,
run...@gmail.com, s.mazel...@xs4all.nl,
santhosh.thottin...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

When keeping the message list page open for long time, the edit token can
expire.

I understood that the mw.api.edit module should automatically try to refresh
the token if this is the case, but it is not happening.

The message is marked as Unsaved, and if you open it, there is warning:
Unable to save message: Invalid token.

The only way out of this is to copy the translation to clipboard and refresh
the page and do it again.

[Bug 43853] A way to find the number of edit conflicts for a given page

--- Comment #2 from Nemo federicol...@tiscali.it ---
(In reply to comment #0)
Highly viewed articles, especially those on the main page, receive a high
amount of traffic everyday, which results in a lot of edit conflicts.

Maybe.

 This
issue is one of the main things which needs to be considered about
 enWiki:

Definitely not.

 TAFI,
which will be going to the Main Page soon.

[[Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement]]?
It's not on the main page, so there isn't any proof this is really a problem.

If there was a way to track just the number of edit conflicts (and maybe the
percentage of those conflicts which were resolved - Resolved implying
 another
edit by the same user within 10 minutes.),

Your definition of resolved is weird: a resolved edit conflict is one which
gets automatically merged or suppressed by MediaWiki, or one where the user
manually merges the edits, in short any edit conflict resulting in a saved
edit.
Perhaps you're talking of edit conflicts where the user just saves the own
version killing the last edit, only to recover it later?

it would be really helpful in
tracking down the efficiency of handling them, and to figure out how to deal
 with them.

What about telling users to write edit conflict in their edit summary when
they do something as unkind as what above?
Or maybe, if you better defined what sort of occasions you're talking about, we
could find a way to automatically detect them and file another bug about adding
a tag ([[mw:Manual:Tags]]) to such edits, but it seems unlikely.

It's not clear what the stated problem actually is and the suggested solution
(cluttering who knows what place with some obscure information of little or n
interest for most people) is not acceptable, so I'm marking this rejected to
save your time.
Feel free to reopen if you can clarify the rationale, or to adopt the tagging
proposal above and file a new bug.

I never understood. :)
Assuming RobLa actually meant to file his bug in Wikimedia product, his request
is about running the script in some different way on en.wiki, while this bug is
about making the script more efficient so that such care is not needed.
If bug 36195 is fixed, in practice nobody will bother about fixing this, which
should be closed; fixing this would imply fixing bug 36195 too.

I disagree with new priority/severity: edit conflict handling is an important
part of editing, and if suppression of self-conflicts fails users get very
confused and a lot of time is wasted, plus there is no workaround and it's
definitely something we worry about (see Brion's comment on bug 28720): matches
normal/normal or normal/major definitions.

Assuming this is about the Wikimedia search in the Firefox toolbar that you can
add by going to View Toolbar Customize Search in Firefox, there is
nothing that Wikimedia can do as this code is not controlled by Wikimedia
(hence closing this report as INVALID as it's out of our control).

Please file a bug report under

I'm more inclined to pass the revision number along with the deletion form,
 and
check the current revision number against the master prior to performing the
deletion; if it differs, the user can be taken back to the deletion form
 with a
simple warning. Confirming the deletion a second time will go ahead and
 delete it.

Makes sense.

Not a design issue at all, we already have this sort of warnings (the page was
protected, it was deleted before, etc.); plus, nobody cares if sysops see ugly
warnings when deleting something.

Waiting for next year's Bugzilla 5 to disable it:

(In reply to comment #4)
I would suggest we just put all the OSes there and get rid of (migrating the
 existing data) Mobile Platform.

Please convince the Mobile team to agree (combined with a nice proposal which
items to merge or remove) and I will gladly do so - this is/was handled in bug

[Bug 45767] New: Private wikis need to override wikimedia-copyright message

2013-03-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45767

Bug ID: 45767
Summary: Private wikis need to override wikimedia-copyright
message
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: WikimediaMessages
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: legoktm.wikipe...@gmail.com
CC: s.mazel...@xs4all.nl
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Currently private wikis need to override the wikimedia-copyright message to
indicate that the content is not licensed as CC-BY-SA-3.0.

You can see this by going to any private wiki (otrswiki, ombudsmenwiki,
stewardwiki) and looking at the message displayed, and what is shown with
?uselang=qqx.

This becomes a problem when no one overrides the message, as is the case at
arbcomenwiki: http://arbcom.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page which says that
content is licensed under a CC-BY-SA license, which probably isnt the case.

[Bug 23736] Change conflict issues on highly active pages

2013-03-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23736

Nemo federicol...@tiscali.it changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 Status|NEW |RESOLVED
 CC||federicol...@tiscali.it
 Resolution|--- |DUPLICATE

--- Comment #2 from Nemo federicol...@tiscali.it ---
(In reply to comment #0)
 * Highly active pages (talk pages in particular) have issues with edit
 conflicts

Right.

 - issues that could be resolved by a careful time-limited (and
high-activity only) application of a lock-out feature. Such lock outs would
 be
short, perhaps of only 1 or 2 minutes, but would give continuing/interrupting
editors notice, and possibly cue submitted talk comments as diff patches -
 all
in an ordered sequence that minimizes change conflicts.

Your proposed solution makes it look a bad idea, but it's not (in general): I
call it a duplicate of bug 980.

 * When an change edit conflict occurs, the presented fields both contain
 full
article text, which negates the editing (and databasing)
 benefits/functionality
of section editing, and compounds the difficulty in re-collecting added
comments from the bottom field, finding the exact section and place where it
 belongs, and re-adding it.

That's bug 4745.

(In reply to comment #1)
(Continuing) Simply refactoring how the change conflict page is displayed
 could
mitigate some of these issues. For example, showing the user's own diff at
 top
would allow them to see first what exactly has occurred, and allow them to
re-select the text to paste back into the new edit field. A particulary
effective solution could be in printing re-opened section-edit fields rather
than the whole page edit fields.

Hm, this appears like bug 17177, but is actually different; in a way, it's like
bug 980 again, in that we'd like to have a report on merge conflicts like
SVN/CVS/Git produce.
The idea was rejected by the proposer there because it would make the edit
window too complex, but maybe there's an easy solution we could still profit
from, like a way to show what your diff to the revision you were editing was,
or anyway to provide the user something better to copy and paste in the edit
area to recover the own edit.

I can't discover more than one style definition applied to some elements
targeted by Commons' Common.js (so it seems to be fixed?); however gadgets are
still loading their CSS trough both, JS ( mw.loader.implement( ... {css:[ /*
CSS here */ ]}) ) and a separate CSS.

However, the upper edit box only contains the first section (the anonymous
intro section) - which is *not* the section I had been editing, by the way.
 The
lower box boes contain the full article, I think.

No, they both contain the full article: the upper area current revision, the
bottom your own. I wasn't able to understand who is who and who did what in the
page history.
I'm marking this as working for me; please reopen if this happens again and you
have more precise information and ideally a screenshot.

I pressed the View Changes button and saw some changes to other parts of the
page - which confused me initially, as I couldn't have possibly made such
changes, as I wasn't editing those sections at the time.

This is indeed a problem which should be addressed separately with a feature
request to improve the show diff.
