[Bug 27311] Add a create a page interface to MediaWiki core

2013-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27311

--- Comment #11 from Nemo federicol...@tiscali.it ---
I don't have an opinion on the closure, but

(In reply to comment #10)
 https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Create_Page seemed to have this
 exact
aim. There is code developed by Jeroen and paid by the WMF that allegedly
 runs
on 1.18 and higher. It looks like a solution or at least a starting point.

from the description of that extension I would never ever have guessed that it
does something similar to what asked on this bug (it's presented as an InputBox
alternative): as you seem to know more than most people about that extension,
could you please improve the page?
Thanks.

I suggest to trim leading/trailing spaces around statements of string type.

Due to a cp error I added some trainling spaces at a VIAF statement and had to
remove them with an extra edit, see URL.

This extension is indeed an InputBox [0] alternative. It's both simpler and
less powerful. Perhaps more importantly, InputBox is already in use by WMF, so
if you want such a solution, that one seems like the most logical pick.

Wikidata edits are not shown in the watchlist at all if user has Group changes

I see that they've been intentionally hidden in I567a697f, but it's a

Do we?

After Wikidata was enabled on pl.wiki, I've heard users complaining about WD
edits showing up on their watchlist, because – quoting – it's an external
project, not the Wikipedia, it's just clutter.

I'm certain that the response to WD edits appearing in article histories would
be extremely negative.

Changing language links is maybe not the best example, but a Wikidata edit that
changes a value in the infobox should definitely be visible in the article
history. The best would be if changes would only be visible for properties
which are actually queried in the article, but I suppose that would break with
more complex use cases like conditional templates and Lua.

Maybe external changes affecting the article could be shown on a separate
history tab/special page?

As I understand it, with prop=imageinfo and redirects, the API should follow
redirects on commons too, but it doesn't seem to.

For example, the query

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=querytitles=File:Wodan%20Heilt%20Balders%20Pferd%20by%20Emil%20Doepler.jpgprop=imageinforedirects

doesn't return any imageinfo, even though [[commons:File:Wodan Heilt Balders
Pferd by Emil Doepler.jpg]] is a redirect to [[commons:File:Wodan heilt Balders

If the mouse-cursor hits a wikilink, a small box opens near the link and shows
the lemma the link leads to. There is a problem with interwikilinks in
languages written from right to left (Hebrew, Arab), if the lemma of the aim
ends with a bracket. The closing bracket at the end is displayed as opening
bracket in the beginning. Example: The German lemma
''[http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zug_%28Eisenbahn%29 Zug (Eisenbahn)]'' is
displayed in Arab [http://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/قطار] or Hebrew
[http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/רכבת] wikipedia in the box as ''(Zug (Eisenbahn''
.

The request on my fresh installed wiki:
$curl --compressed --dump-header headers

/dev/null; cat headers | grep Content-Encoding

The same request on Wikipedia:
$curl --compressed --dump-header headers
http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/load.php?debug=falselang=enmodules=jquery%2Cmediawikionly=scriptsskin=vector;
/dev/null; cat headers | grep Content-Encoding
Content-Encoding: gzip
$

gzip compression does not work on load.php for me with a recent (1.20.2)
Mediawiki. It seems to work on Wikipedia, but no clue how the WMF does that.
IMO this should work per default.

$wgDisableOutputCompression is unset (so false). Other pages are correctly
compressed. Only content delivered with load.php is not compressed.

[Bug 32721] VIPS out of memory on large (100 Mpx) non-progressive JPEG

2013-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32721

--- Comment #14 from John Cupitt jcup...@gmail.com ---
A new vips is out, so I thought I'd update the benchmark again with the latest
version of each package.

This time I've used my laptop. This has an i5-3210M at 2.5 GHz and 6gb of RAM.
On this machine, ImageMagick processes via RAM rather than via a temporary disc
file so speed is up, but memuse is too.

Summary:

program version | realusersys peak mem
---+-
vipsthumbnail 7.32.0 | 3.925 3.856 0.068 54mb
pngscale master | 4.530 4.484 0.040 1mb
convert 6.7.7-10 | 8.516 17.521 0.784 987mb

peak mem is measured with a version of Tim Starling's perl program to watch
strace output:

http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/development/peakmem.pl

Output:

http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/development/tn_Chicago-vips.jpg
http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/development/tn_Chicago-pngscale.png
http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/development/tn_Chicago-magick2.jpg

Quality looks very similar, though perhaps pngscale is a little softer than the
others.

Log:

I've edited this down, I ran each command four times and picked the fastest.
This is just supposed to show the exact commands I ran.

Selecting many (7?) files at once results into missing some of them in the
 next step (uploading to stash).

Which step do you mean? Normally by steps we mean the arrowheads on the top;
none of them is called uploading to stash.

I tried uploading 8 images and all of them were present *at least* till the

 Which step do you mean?

For me it was upload step:

(Quoting from bug 40114 comment #3)
I'm not sure it's the same bug. I reported a random selection in the upload
step, while bug 39902 is about files disappearing in the next step. Perhaps
 we
 described it bad though.

User babel boxes currently have English-language headers and footers. They
should be automatically translated into the user's language. That was already
done in Commons, see bug 27793.

Is this bug the reason that you can't see on the translated page any more which
messages have changed in Wikidata? At present I can see in the version history
only what FuzzyBot has changed. On the translated pages the translated text is
replaced by English text but the changed text is not marked and even the
translation percentage is not changed. Also in the translation tool is not
shown which messages have been changed, I have to open every message to find
out the fuzzied messages because neither the word !!FUZZY!! is shown nor the
background color of fuzzied messages differs from that of up-to-date messages.

Please mark changed messages on translated pages and update translation
percentage, as before.
Please mark changed message in Translation tool with either with !!FUZZY!!
or/and a separate background color

At present a translator has a small chance only to see which messages have been
changed.

--- Comment #7 from Niklas Laxström niklas.laxst...@gmail.com ---
Outdated messages can be found in the list of untranslated messages. In the new
UI there will be separate tab for outdated messages and clear label too.

I can not confirm the issue with percentages are there are no steps to
reproduce.

Outdated messages will not be marked in translation pages, because they are
replaced with the source text.

I didn't know that there will be a new UI for the translation tool. Well, you
are right, I can display the untranslated resp. outdated messages only. But I
see in the version history only which pages were changed. And, I must have
those pages in my watching list. Otherwise I don't see that fuzzybot changed
those pages. For me as translator it is a regression that outdated messages are
not marked on translated pages any more. I don't understand why a well-tried
feature is removed.

[Bug 42318] Restore WikiStats features disabled for mere performance reasons

--- Comment #5 from Erik Zachte erikzac...@infodisiac.com ---
Revert stats can be deduced from stub dumps as these now contains checksums. It
just hasn't happened yet.

In a wider perspective:

I'm hoping the stub dumps can be extended with the few meta data missing that
would fill in the blanks. Not exactly trivial, but we could forget about full
dumps for wikistats.

Things we miss:

Does the article contain an internal link? (disregarding links in templates for
pragmatic reasons) Now we have different article counts in wikistats when
processing stub or full archive dump.

Word count (wikistats first strips headers, html and the like, and tries to be
(too) smart about (some) non western languages (using a conversion factor to
deduce word counts from glyph count).

External links, image counts (I guess we could skip both, less requested than
metrics above)

[Bug 45677] CSSJanus mishandles box-shadow and text-shadow

2013-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45677

--- Comment #14 from Isarra zhoris...@gmail.com ---
Krinkle, I appreciate that you apparently didn't consider my previous arguments
rational, but in light of the lighting concern, I still would argue that not
flipping shadows doesn't make sense design-wise. Amir probably makes the main
point that if the layout of rest of the interface expects the shadows to be a
certain way (and if shadows are a significant part of it chances are it will)
then the shadows should be flipped too.

But for specific concerns about the light source, if there is a light source
prominent enough that the directionality would matter that much with regards to
it, chances are there's something wrong with the design in general. Such overly
skeuomorphic designs can be cute, but rarely do they work well, especially for
websites.

That's not to say they can't work, however - but if someone does want to do
that, they will need to add rtl-specific/noflip definitions for other pieces of
the page like paddings, margins, etc anyway for precisely the reason Amir
brought up, so the same can and should be applied to the shadows.

Not having shadows flip is an unexpected and unnecessary inconsistency.

I will start the on-wiki discussion shortly. A few more questions that came up:
- will it be harder the change the rules on the fly, if they turn out to be
imperfect? I understand changing the collation is difficult because one has to
reindex the whole table, but I suppose changing the first letters would be
simpler.
- by the way, should we also check the collation itself? I have mostly
collected input on the first letter grouping until now.
- will it be possible to create custom groups? (e.g. someone suggested using a
Numbers group, having separate groups for all digits looks a bit silly)
- what is the logic for non-Hungarian characters? Accented latin characters
seem to be ordered as if the accents were stripped, which is good, but it would
be nice to see the rules spelled out somewhere.

[Bug 45596] Set $wgCategoryCollation to 'uca-hu' on Hungarian Wikipedia and rebuild category sort keys

2013-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45596

--- Comment #13 from Bartosz Dziewoński matma@gmail.com ---
(In reply to comment #12)
 - will it be harder the change the rules on the fly, if they turn out to
be imperfect? I understand changing the collation is difficult because
one has to reindex the whole table, but I suppose changing the first
 letters would be simpler.

Real changes to the collation will require running the update script again,
which might take a couple of hours for hu.wiki (according to Reedy's
testing, it took about 20 hours for the 3.2 million pages on pl.wikipedia).
Category sorting might be slightly borked during this time, and all category
pages will have to be purged afterwards (action=purge or just wait till the
caches expire).

Changing the first letters later won't break the collation, since it's
entirely handled by an external library (ICU); it'll require a purge to
appear on-wiki, though.

 - by the way, should we also check the collation itself? I have mostly
collected input on the first letter grouping until now.

Please do, but I'm pretty much certain it's correct; it's handled by the ICU
library, which is a battle-tested and mature piece of software.

 - will it be possible to create custom groups? (e.g. someone suggested
using a Numbers group, having separate groups for all digits looks a
 bit silly)

This isn't supported right now, but at a first glance possible; it would
likely depend on whether creating the group would require different sorting
order. However, IMO this particular change should be done for all projects
at once, if desired, and should wait for the natural number sorting to be
implemented first (bug 6948) and for multiple collation support (bug 44667;
the chinese-collation branch includes this).

 - what is the logic for non-Hungarian characters? Accented latin
characters seem to be ordered as if the accents were stripped, which is
good, but it would be nice to see the rules spelled out somewhere.

Yes, that's exactly what happens, and similarly for accented variants of
letters in other alphabets; I though I mentioned that somewhere, apologies.
The default sorting rules are the ones [[Unicode Collation Algorithm]] uses;
they are appropriately tailored for each language-specific collation.

The default first-letters list includes full basic latin, greek and
cyrillic alphabets and I think all printable ASCII characters, as well as a
lot of letters from other alphabets and a whole lot of Unicode symbols. It
is generated by MediaWiki based on the data about which letters have
primary-level weight in UCA, but I'm not sure what is the exact behavior;
you can see the generation script at
/maintenance/language/generateCollationData.php in mediawiki/core

I doubt that's relevant, though. :)

Translation pages are still updated and the percentage indicates that 100% is
not translated. I don't see any regression here.

(In reply to comment #9)
This is a transitional issue because we made internal changes how the changes
are tracked. It will go away with time.

In fact MediaWiki core doesn't know when a text string is a date. Wikipedia
uses a template for this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Date

Maybe the functionality you are requesting could be build on / around that
template? The discussion should happen in that page. And this sounds like a
WONTFIX here.

I think this idea deserves more attention. I haven't done any systematic
testing but I have the impressions that e.g. Facebook or Google+ have trouble
interpreting the beginning of an article when they feature a URL except. (They
also get confused by what image to choose). The result is less effective
summaries of Wikipedia pages (and by extension MediaWiki based pages) in those
services used by millions.

An automatic identifier for the beginning of a paragraph (skipping templates
and infoboxes) could be useful.

(To comment 8) No, that's not true, the percentage on the translation page
indicates how much is **translated**. Please consider that I speak about
Wikidata pages! And although FuzzyBot now changes the translated directly
replacing translated text by English text, it didn't change the percentage. I
saw it on Wikidata:Introduction. FuzzyBot changed the outdated messages
replacing translated text by English text but the percentage remained at 100%.
Now I updated translation of Wikidata:introduction, and now 100% is the correct
percentage again.

BTW: There is a small cache issue: When I have translated resp. updated the
last untranslated resp. outdated messsage, its translation is not taken over to
the translation page. I must do a small edit in the translation tool, then it
works.

(To comment 9): Thanks for your information.

In 2004 Brion said before WONTFIXing:

(In reply to comment #1)
Sorry, but this is not practical; sections don't have a consistent identity
 which could be watched reliably.

Then in 2011 Jan reopened. Yet Brion's sentence is still true. This features
can't be really implemented until sections are something more than a piece of
text between an = at the beginning of a line and the next.

Silas' idea is not bad, but still would be problematic e.g. what happens when
an editor changes one character in a section? Or when a section is inserted
before the one you are watching?

MediaWiki displays content in a way that looks like sections but in fact it has
no idea of the semantic organization of a page. Before this is solved (is there
anybody planing to work on this?) this looks like a WONTFIX now just like it
looked in 2004.

[Bug 36307] action=raw on MediaWiki namespace returns 404 if the page has been deleted

2013-03-09 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36307

--- Comment #7 from Yuvi Panda yuvipa...@gmail.com ---
The use case is when you want the raw data of a translated message used by
mediawiki.

The particular case was, I was trying to find out the localized Main Pages of
all wikis. If you hit
https://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%AE%E0%AF%80%E0%AE%9F%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%AF%E0%AE%BE%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%95%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%95%E0%AE%BF:Mainpage?action=view
you will see that it is returned as முதற் பக்கம், which is picked up from the
i18n cache. The logic for this page's contents seem to be: 1. if that
particular page exists (Mediawiki:something) return that, else return value
of something from message cache.

This mostly works for action=raw too - for example,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Mainpage?action=raw returns appropriate
response, consistent with action=view

However,
https://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%AE%E0%AF%80%E0%AE%9F%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%AF%E0%AE%BE%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%95%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%95%E0%AE%BF:Mainpage?action=raw
returns a 404 - the only change being action=view to action=raw. It turns out
that on tawiki, at some previous point the custom page existed, but was hence
deleted. Hence while action=view falls back appropriately to the i18n cache,
action=raw does not, and returns a 404.
