[Bug 47676] VisualEditor: Re-label the 'cancel' toolbar message to 'exit without saving'

2013-04-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47676

I read your concern, Amir, and my opinion is similar to that of James. In
computer interaction, clicking a button that says Cancel will end the current
action (in this case editing a page) without actually committing the changes
that the actor made. I see no deviation from that paradigm in the two use cases
you describe.

I think we shoild close this issue without implementing the suggestion made.

It's all light blue and there is no link whatsoever, unlike
Special:Notifications where "user talk" links to the talk page and the edit
summary section link is parsed.

Probably worth "critical" severity as the new user message bar is removed at
the same time and this means talk messages are inaccessible.

English only, seriously?

I see a vague mention of "other projects" but all this seems to be
en.wiki-only, is the deploy planned only for en.wiki?

Special:Notifications "solves" this by parsing the edit summary so that the

This is RT 822.

There was a message to Thomas a little over 2 weeks ago. No response yet. But
there was no other recent contact AFAIK so maybe the address we used is not
current.

Also, there were a number of messages talking about a "shortening service" and
I get the impression that people see that phrase and take it at face value
without reading the whole ticket.

To reiterate from RT:

maintaining the status quo doesn't require maintaining a database of any kind
nor any new services. it's just a simple 1 line RewriteRule regex in
redirects.conf

[Bug 47704] "(help me choose)" should appear only after a failed registration attempt

> All Wikimedia projects should have a help document or policy describing what
> is and is not an acceptable username.

Maybe, although this is not the reality today. But in any case: this a feature
in MediaWiki core, not an extension used only by Wikimedia projects. I don't
think we can enforce Wikimedia policies through the UI of a plain MediaWiki
feature.

Also why poor practice? What is the % of users that hit a wrong username vs the
ones just going through? Have you seen any popular web service referring to a
username policy the moment you create an account? I have registered to plenty
of online services and never saw such notice.

In the current registration page that link is one of many and I'm sure most
users don't even see it. But in the new UX (which I love) it suddenly becomes
the most visible link. And let me repeat, the long destination page only helps
to those having the patience to read 40% of it through. I wouldn't be surprised
if in practice people try whatever username had in mind already without reading
any policy in advance.

Please consider reopening, even if it doesn't fit in your priorities today.

The default properties for the Table of Contents properties can be changed to
be switched off. Normally we proposed to have them switched off (This is the
extension's default).

// default user options [from TocTree.php]
$wgDefaultUserOptions['toc-floated'] = false;
$wgDefaultUserOptions['toc-expand'] = false;

But the strong English community wanted to switch 'toc-floated' on. And all
language branches must have the same default values (I think so). If you like
to change it please discuss this problem with the English community.

We should upwards prioritize bug 4845 regardless of the outcome of this bug.
Until that's fixed perhaps we should consider making this an optional flag. The
other option is to suggest that wikis simply customize the message part after
"Can't see the image?" to some sort of documentation about accessibility (or
rather, our lack thereof).

This was specified to be NUMBEROFACTIVEUSERS in the documentation on
MediaWiki.org, not NUMBEROFUSERS, so it's just wrong. Agreed that number of
users is pretty meaningless. Anyway, easy enough to fix.

Apparently this got announced on the Wikimedia blog with a link to the English
Wikipedia. The current page reads "18,867,856 contributors this month" (the
number of active users is 131,184). Swear to God. We're fixing it.

Though it occurs to me that the updated version still might read as though the
stats are per month, when the edits stat is lifetime and the pages stat is
lifetime. That is, you could read down the column as "X, Y, and Z this month",
when really it's only Z that's per month. X and Y are over the lifetime of the
project. This issue should also be investigated.

According to

mediawiki.org had 889,737 contributors this month.

Such claim done by an official page under an official domain is something we
don't want to see quoted accidentally or not elsewhere out of a testing

The new ACUX includes a string "Can't see the image? Request an
account", forcing any MediaWiki instance to have such page and such
process in place. English Wikipedia does have it but e.g. as far as I know
mediawiki.org doesn't, just like most MediaWiki projects out there.

Forcing MediaWiki projects to have that process if they want to use captchas
for registration is not the way to go. This string should be optional. Or it
could be simply removed from the extension itself, allowing admins to add it as
part of whatever text they want to edit / hardcode in the user creation page.

Also note that, for consistency,

Bug 4845 - CAPTCHA doesn't work for blind people

was open in 2006 and currently has Low priority. Either we think this is an
important problem (and we try to fix it with audio captcha or some post-captcha
system) or then we don't push the ugly patch (a parallel manual process) so
aggressively to all MediaWikis by default.

The new ACUX shows this link "(help me choose)" prominently on top of the first
textfield. This is a wikipedism that has several problems:

* Most MediaWiki instances don't have any username policy. With that link
enforced you need to create a wiki page not to show that link in red. See for
instance
http://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Project:Username_policy&action=edit&redlink=1

* Even if you do have a policy (like English Wikipedia has) this is probably
not a page you want all new user to look, scared that they might be doing
something wrong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Username_policy is so
dense and boring that it might drive potential new users away.

I'm not sure how to force a wrong username and I don't want to create fake
accounts trying to test this, but I bet when you try to create a "blacklisted"
user name you get an error message. Place the "(help me choose)" link in the
error message instead, since that is the place where legitimate users will need
it.

In the meantime most people just trying to register with their NameSurnameXYZ
and other innocent variants will just go through, unaware (for good!) of the
dense boring policy they just followed unconsciously.

No it isn't (bug 47665).

Right, the issue here is the blue (non-link) text, though. (Or at least that's
one of the issues. Monobook's link colors aren't really relevant here at all.)

[Bug 47703] New: MIDI generation on Windows fails with "No MIDI file generated despite being requested"; Support "-dmidi-extension=midi"

2013-04-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47703

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 47703
Summary: MIDI generation on Windows fails with "No MIDI file
generated despite being requested"; Support
"-dmidi-extension=midi"
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: Windows XP
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Score
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: gnosy...@gmail.com
CC: jger...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

---
Reproductions steps
---
* Install the Score extension on a Windows machine (I was able to reproduce on
Windows XP and Windows 7)

* Create a page with the following wikitext:
\relative c' { d }

* Click "Show Preview". The following error appears:

No MIDI file generated despite being requested. If you are working in raw
LilyPond mode, make sure to provide a proper \midi block.

-
Cause
-
* Score.body.php uses ".midi" throughout the file as the extension for MIDI
files

* However, on Windows, Lilypond treats ".mid" as the default extension for MIDI
files. See the following Lilypond page
(http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.15/Documentation/notation/creating-midi-files):

Due to some limitations on Windows, the default extension for MIDI files on
Windows is .mid.

--
Recommendation
--
* Add the "-dmidi-extension=midi" command line arg as per
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.17/Documentation/usage/command_002dline-usage

Specifically:
midi-extension"midi"Set the default file extension for MIDI output file
to given string.

The recommended area of change would be here:
$cmd = wfEscapeShellArg( $wgScoreLilyPond )
. ' ' . wfEscapeShellArg( '-dsafe=#t' )
. ' -dmidi-extension=midi'
. ' -dbackend=ps --png --header=texidoc '
. wfEscapeShellArg( $factoryLy )
. ' 2>&1';

The above change allows me to generate MIDI files on my Windows XP box.

I've also tested the "-dmidi-extension=midi" command-line argument on Windows
XP, Windows 7, and Linux Mint Nadia. In each case, the output MIDI file has an
extension of ".midi" (i.e.: manually specifying "midi" on Linux seems to be
benign)

The CAPTCHAs vary in height. I put a min-height of 95 (which seems to be a
close upper bound) to accomplish two goals:

1. Don't scale or skew the CAPTCHA. We don't want to make it even less
readable.
2. Don't have the move jump vertically when they ask for a new CAPTCHA.

If this seems to be worse than jumping, we could look at removing the
min-height. Or, we could change the CAPTCHA generation script to output fixed
height images (a bigger project).

You can block paste with JavaScript, though some people definitely consider it
obnoxious.

It might be useful without blocking paste, though. It gives you a safeguard
against losing the account, but if you're in a hurry, you can still copy and

CCed Luis Villa. If they don't respond, my feeling is the "Privacy policy"

I don't know the exact behavior, but for example Google ("Stay signed in"),
Facebook ("Keep me logged in"), and Twitter ("Remember me") all have such a
checkbox on log in, and none say the time period.

I believe that a popular use of a portable Wikipedia would be its use as a
field guide. This is because the only reason one would get a portable Wikipedia
is to find out about something they are not aware of. It's certainly what I'm
looking for.

Picture it: Adding this to the program would allow anyone, anywhere, to
identify possible safety hazards. All for less than a gigabyte (at least, for
now) using the Simple English Wikipedia .ZIM file and Kiwix. WITHOUT INTERNET!

I'm not suggesting that this be done immediately, but rather over time, maybe a
few per version. One could easily start with the Black Widow and go from there.
Here's a great list to start. If crowdsourcing is an option, count me in:
http://oddstuffmagazine.com/most-hazardous-animals-in-the-world.html

As an addition, plants and even areas can be added!

This is not a software issue. It's English Wikipedia's
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Nosuchuser override. For reference,
the software default is:

There is no user by the name "$1".
Usernames are case sensitive.
Check your spelling, or [[Special:UserLogin/signup|create a new account]].

You can certainly propose to change English Wikipedia's at

There is no way I know to make links open in a new tab (CSS 3 supposedly adds
it as target-new, but I don't know if the support is there). However, we could
open it in a new window, which users can configure to mean "new tab".

This is because when a user checks this box, they are only entering their
username and email address. If they enter their email address incorrectly then
they wouldn't have any access to that account because an auto-generated

If we show it, it should be based on the actual configuration. But I'm not
convinced this is necessary. It's information on the page that might not need
to be there.

If you don't feel comfortable with long-term cookies, you don't have to check
it. The exact time period is not strictly necessary to make this call.

Are there other sites that show the time period for this?
