[Bug 49686] VisualEditor: automagically convert wikitext (e.g. link) to VE-compatible elements

2013-08-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49686

Note that this question is included in the large
State RFC on the en.wikipedia, as question
5. The current tally, for what's it worth, is 28 supporting and 22 opposing,
but with many conditional comments on both sides ("yes for X but no for Y").
Many of the opposes are "no, because this is a WYSIWYG", but in reality, of
course, this isn't a wysiwyg but a hybrid anyway... (you still need to know
wikimarkup to do a lot of things in the new editor in mainspace as well)

When trying to edit enwiki (or hewiki) article on mobile version it shows a
message "You must be logged in to edit pages on mobile".
(wgMFAnonymousEditing is set to false).

Editing should be allowed for mobile users (as they aren't blocked, and have
the right to do it in PC version and it was once allowed for them to edit...)
unless the community request otherwise.

[Bug 46918] Present list of random articles from one or more categories

This bug asks for a list of links (not a redirect), also from multiple
categories, ideally with subcategories and namespaces handling as erwin's tool.

The idea to use a list, perhaps even included in a nice pace editable on wiki,
came from the original hope to have this in GettingStarted, but that extension
went in another direction, so if someone prefers to build upon the redirect
feature of Special:RandomInCategory that would be fine – when all the above is
implemented we'd have the MediaWiki equivalent of erwin's tool.

Flagged Revisions provides a number of edit notices about the status of the

We've now made a modal dialog pop up warning the user about the beta status of
VisualEditor, and labelled VisualEditor as "beta" on its edit tab (and the edit

I'm going to presumptively (;-)) mark this as "fixed", but please re-open if

The numbers went up when we switched from inputbox to textarea. Expecting them
not to fall when we reverse that change seems unlikely to me.

[Bug 52439] New: [SD] Inject Header and Footer

Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: SemanticDrilldown
 Assignee: yaro...@gmail.com
 Reporter: planeten...@web.de
Classification: Unclassified
 Mobile Platform: ---

User Story:

As a user I'd like to be able to add new pages to a category directly from the
categories Special:BrowseData page. The workflow would look like this:

1) Drilldown to see if a page exists
2) If the page does not exist, add it e.g. through #forminput

---

My first idea was to inject something like a "header text" the same way
the page tile could be set:

link type=button }}

or better:

Has drilldown header text::sometemplate

The text should be shown below the title as a lead text for the page.

---

A Category page could look like this:

link type=button }}
[[Has drilldown footer text::This fancy drilldown page has been brought
to you by wikiworks]]

free to skip".

[Bug 52133] VisualEditor: Edit summary box should be a text input box and not textarea

2013-08-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52133

I seriously doubt that that is the reason you have a higher incidence of edit
summaries. What you did in parallel to making it a textarea was that you hid
the "Save page" final submit button behind a dialog that prominently presents
the box for an edit summary. Users no longer feel free to skip a mysterious
text box and click "Save page" right away, the look and feel of the modal
dialog forces them to consider filling it out in full before proceeding. That's
why you're getting more edit summaries.

Created attachment 13051
 --> https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=13051&action=edit
Screenshot of problem

When the link inspector is fairly tall and the space somewhat narrow (e.g. a
red link, 10 suggestions in the inspector, and the link itself is towards the
bottom of the screen), the box will expand further than the page goes
(triggering a scrollbar if needed).

That's fine, except that it is hard to see for the user whether there is more
or not. Especially with OSX hiding scroll bars by default.

There should be some bottom margin so that it can be clearly seen that the
bottom of the list is the bottom, ans eparated from the bottom of the (now
expanded) page.

See attached screenshot.

[Bug 52435] New: Find previous/next links in the navbar more efficiently

2013-08-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52435

 Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 52435
Summary: Find previous/next links in the navbar more
efficiently
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: unspecified
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: BookManagerv2
 Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
 Reporter: molly.whi...@gmail.com
CC: molly.whi...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
 Mobile Platform: ---

Each time a page is loaded, currently, the prev/next links in the navbar are
generated by looping through the entire sections block of the JSON and finding
the current page. This is probably quite slow for very large books.

Relevant IRC discussion:
14:33 < GorillaWarfare> mwalker: If you look at BookManagerv2.hooks.php on line
399, you'll see it's getting the prev/next sections by looping through each
section
14:33 < GorillaWarfare> mwalker: But some books have literally 40,000 sections
14:33 < GorillaWarfare> mwalker: Any thoughts on how to deal wiht that better?
14:33 < mwalker> looking
14:34 < GorillaWarfare> Sure
14:38 < mwalker> GorillaWarfare: so two things come to mind -- first that this
if you keep it this way could be cached
14:38 < mwalker> the second thing is; why is it unsuitable to use the list
order given in the JSON?
14:39 < mwalker> that way it could be numerically indexed and you wouldn't have
this problem
14:39 < GorillaWarfare> Use the list order?
14:40 < mwalker> the order in which they were listed in the raw file
14:42 < mwalker> you have an implicit ordering there which you can actually use
as an index -- and if you wanted on page save; you could turn that into an
explicit ordering which you can then pass down to JS
14:43 < mwalker> or... because I'm an idiot and now see what you're trying to
do
14:43 < mwalker> this hook gets run for a specific page
14:44 < mwalker> so... find the page you're rendering for; and then use that
implicit index to construct just those forward/backward links?
14:54 < GorillaWarfare> How would it know which page was which index?
14:56 < mwalker> GorillaWarfare: for more generic cases it's in_array; but in
this case you can use array_walk()
14:57 < mwalker> or
14:59 < mwalker> hurm... that's not impressively efficient; your best bet might
just be to make an array of index => section name on json page save
14:59 < mwalker> save that in cache
14:59 < mwalker> and then retrieve it
15:00 < mwalker> this is where I wish php had proper trees and tree searching
15:03 < GorillaWarfare> Wait, how is index => section name different from what
it's doing now?
15:05 < mwalker> it's not; except for the bit where you can't search for a
section name to find it's index
15:05 < mwalker> what you're doing right now is actually probably totally fine
so long as you cache it
15:05 < mwalker> it's just that you dont want to do this operation for every
page
15:05 < GorillaWarfare> Even for 40,000 sections?
15:05 < GorillaWarfare> Ohh; it is doing it for every page
15:06 < GorillaWarfare> And the navbars aren't currently cached
15:06 < mwalker> check
15:06 < GorillaWarfare> So it could be slooow
15:06 < mwalker> indeed!
15:06 < GorillaWarfare> Hmm... so how would we do this..
15:06 < GorillaWarfare> Create each navbar at once and cache them sometime?
15:06 < mwalker> the smaller advantage of just having a simple lookup table
without the rest of the metadata is that then you dont have to store all the
metadata into memcache
15:07 < mwalker> well; pre-generate the metadata required for each navbar
15:08 < mwalker> but with 20k sections you're going to run into other problems
-- like how do you even display that
15:09 < GorillaWarfare> Yeh
15:09 < GorillaWarfare> When Raylton was talking about "big books", I don't
think I quite envisioned the true scale
15:09 < mwalker> do they have subsections?
15:09 < mwalker> because then you could cache it sort of as a tree
15:11 < GorillaWarfare> We can't count on it
15:12 < mwalker> grrr
15:12 < mwalker> ok -- so we know we have some limited structured data here
15:13 < mwalker> it might make sense to put this into a database table and then
it's persistent and queryable
15:13 < GorillaWarfare> Eek
15:13 < GorillaWarfare> That... doesn't sound simple
15:13 < mwalker> probably easier than you think; but it will force you to make
some modifications to your algorithms
15:14 < mwalker> because you'll pull in the section ordering data from the
database; and the rest of the book metadata from json
15:14 < mwalker> this might help
http://mikehillyer.com/articles/managing-hierarchical-data-in-mysql/
15:14 < mwalker> just for a concept

[Bug 48817] CSS resize horizontal in the unit translation dialog is useless because this makes the textarea overflow the hints and triggers a FF bug; vertical isn't and doesn't

3. Will be solved by the patch. Everything else would need discussion.

Perhaps issue 3 should be a separate bug. But since it was all about resizing
and being unable to, I've put it in here.

(In reply to comment #8)
> 1. ... If that is what Gerrit change #76482 aimed to resolve
No, this not yet. I will report this upstream.

> 2. horizontal resize should not be possible
Yes, perhaps, or better we do not interfere with the defaults at all. Users
should be free to choose and customize their browsers according to their
wishes.

> 3. appears to express a feature request
No. It is a bug. Somewhere in the code, one texarea is initially created and
.autosize() is called on it. If that textarea is then shown it is too small:
"In the screenshot provided as attachment #3 in bug 48817, the font size
is 16px in the visible textarea and 13px in the mirror due to this
issue."
To reproduce, you need a page that has only one outdated translation and FF 22.

[Bug 52432] New: Registering an empty or nonexistent messages file breaks the messages cache seemingly indefinitely

2013-08-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52432

 Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 52432
Summary: Registering an empty or nonexistent messages file
breaks the messages cache seemingly indefinitely
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: minor
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: Internationalization
 Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
 Reporter: mtrac...@member.fsf.org
CC: alolita.sha...@gmail.com, asha...@wikimedia.org,
kartik.mis...@gmail.com, niklas.laxst...@gmail.com,
run...@gmail.com, s.mazel...@xs4all.nl
Classification: Unclassified
 Mobile Platform: ---

Steps to reproduce:

1. Pick your favourite extension to break - I like Extension:UploadWizard
2. Change the name of its messages file in the extension's main PHP file -
something like "$wgExtensionMessagesFiles['UploadWizard'] =
'LolUploadWizard.i18n.php';", but *do not* create that file.
3. Load a page that uses the message(s) in that message file - like
Special:UploadWizard
4. Note the error. Expected behaviour.
5. Copy the actual messages file to the filename you made up, e.g. "cp
UploadWizard.i18n.php LolUploadWizard.i18n.php"
6. Reload the page from step 3 - note that the error is gone, but no messages
load
7. Refresh as much as you'd like. Rebuild the message and l10n caches if you
want. Hilariously ineffective.
8. Change the name back in the PHP file and refresh the page. Tada. You could
alternatively change it to a different nonexistent filename, refresh the page
once, and then change it back to a proper name, and refresh it again. The
change of filename causes the refresh.

This is probably some overly clever feature that I'm misreading, but it means
that if I forget to create an i18n file at first, I'll mysteriously not have
messages load on the site. Which causes a bit of confusion. Some better
handling somewhere might be good.

John Broughton changed:

 What|Removed |Added

CC||johnbrough...@comcast.net

I can think of possible two reasons why this bug has not been given high
priority:

(1) Those unfamiliar with creating or substantially expanding Wikipedia
articles don't think that this is a big deal. They are wrong - it IS a big
deal. Not been able to cite the same source two or more times in an article,
which is exceptionally common, causes all the problems noted by Pam, above.

or (2) VE's fundamental architecture prevents it from adding footnotes created
during an editing session to the list of footnotes that existed prior to that
session, and if this were listed as a high-priority bug, that design mistake
might be much more obvious.

I really, really hope that the answer is not (2), because if so, that's a
deal-breaker. The lack of such functionality is certainly, in and of itself,
reason to NOW recommend that anyone writing a new article *not* do so in VE.
(And, no, it's not acceptable to do everything but the footnotes in VE, then do
footnotes with the wikitext editor - users absolutely should be footnoting
their text additions with citations, *as they go along*, if only for
efficiency.)

Language variants currently point to the same canonical URL. For example, on
this page:

http://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/%E6%B1%89%E8%AF%AD

...there is a rel=”canonical” pointing to
http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%B1%89%E8%AF%AD

This rel=”canonical” link asks search engines to index the Simplified Chinese
page to represent the content on both pages, instead of separately indexing the
Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese pages. Similar rel=”canonical” links
are found on all zh-TW pages. Google is reporting that we see a similar
problem on other Chinese (e.g. zh-SG) and Serbian content pages.

(this may be caused by the fix to bug 48402)

Mike Christie at en.wp has reported this happening with notes defined in image
captions. Will the fix for this bug solve that when it is deployed or should I
file a separate bug?

As I said on IRC, you have to use the language from the ParserOptions, not from
the request context, since on save, the parse is done with default options, for
link update purposes. So the language that the parser cache is keyed by won't
match the user request language.

Change the argument of the 'siblings' method (line 52 of the version linked
above) from 'br' to 'br, .error' should fix this bug.

[Bug 52426] New: Make work with localized separators

2013-08-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52426

 Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 52426
Summary: Make work with localized separators
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: unspecified
 Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
 Keywords: i18n
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: ParserFunctions
 Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
 Reporter: mybugs.m...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
 Mobile Platform: ---

As reported on
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Extension_talk:ParserFunctions/Use_comma_as_decimal_separator
and
https://pt.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=36562067&uselang=en#Re:_Casas_decimais_no_ParserFunctions
a code such as doesn't work on ptwiki:
https://pt.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=36571994&uselang=en
(Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character ",".)

Currently, we have the following on languages/messages/MessagesPt.php:
> $separatorTransformTable = array( ',' => "\xc2\xa0", '.' => ',' );
so, the character "," should be treated as the decimal separator, and the
result should be 4.5, as if the user had used on enwiki.

A user suggested at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Extension_talk:ParserFunctions/Use_comma_as_decimal_separator/reply_(3)
the following change:
Add
> $expr = str_replace( ',', '.', $expr );
to the begin of ExprParser::doExpression() and replaced line 82 in
ExtParserFunctions::expr() with
> $result = self::getExprParser()->doExpression( $expr );
> $result = $parser->mOptions->mUserLang->formatNum( $result );
> return $result;
The first replaces all commas in a given expression with dots and the second
formats the output in the user language.

Could something like this be changed in the extension's code, for use on
Portuguese Wikipedia?
