[Bug 49686] VisualEditor: automagically convert wikitext (e.g. [[link]]) to VE-compatible elements
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49686 --- Comment #35 from wikif...@gmail.com --- Note that this question is included in the large [[Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Default State RFC]] on the en.wikipedia, as question 5. The current tally, for what's it worth, is 28 supporting and 22 opposing, but with many conditional comments on both sides ("yes for X but no for Y"). Many of the opposes are "no, because this is a WYSIWYG", but in reality, of course, this isn't a wysiwyg but a hybrid anyway... https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46918 --- Comment #4 from Nemo --- (In reply to comment #3) > Is this resolved now that https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/71997/ (Add > Special:RandomInCategory) has been merged? Or is it significantly different > than bug 25931? This bug asks for a list of links (not a redirect), also from multiple categories, ideally with subcategories and namespaces handling as erwin's tool. The idea to use a list, perhaps even included in a nice pace editable on wiki, came from the original hope to have this in GettingStarted, but that extension went in another direction, so if someone prefers to build upon the redirect feature of Special:RandomInCategory that would be fine – when all the above is implemented we'd have the MediaWiki equivalent of erwin's tool. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. That's fine, except that it is hard to see for the user whether there is more or not. Especially with OSX hiding scroll bars by default. There should be some bottom margin so that it can be clearly seen that the bottom of the list is the bottom, ans eparated from the bottom of the (now expanded) page. This is probably quite slow for very large books. Relevant IRC discussion: 14:33 < GorillaWarfare> mwalker: If you look at BookManagerv2.hooks.php on line 399, you'll see it's getting the prev/next sections by looping through each section 14:33 < GorillaWarfare> mwalker: But some books have literally 40,000 sections 14:33 < GorillaWarfare> mwalker: Any thoughts on how to deal wiht that better? 14:33 < mwalker> looking 14:34 < GorillaWarfare> Sure 14:38 < mwalker> GorillaWarfare: so two things come to mind -- first that this if you keep it this way could be cached 14:38 < mwalker> the second thing is; why is it unsuitable to use the list order given in the JSON? 14:39 < mwalker> that way it could be numerically indexed and you wouldn't have this problem 14:39 < GorillaWarfare> Use the list order? 14:40 < mwalker> the order in which they were listed in the raw file 14:42 < mwalker> you have an implicit ordering there which you can actually use as an index -- and if you wanted on page save; you could turn that into an explicit ordering which you can then pass down to JS 14:43 < mwalker> or... because I'm an idiot and now see what you're trying to do 14:43 < mwalker> this hook gets run for a specific page 14:44 < mwalker> so... find the page you're rendering for; and then use that implicit index to construct just those forward/backward links? 14:54 < GorillaWarfare> How would it know which page was which index? 14:56 < mwalker> GorillaWarfare: for more generic cases it's in_array; but in this case you can use array_walk() 14:57 < mwalker> or 14:59 < mwalker> hurm... that's not impressively efficient; your best bet might just be to make an array of index => section name on json page save 14:59 < mwalker> save that in cache 14:59 < mwalker> and then retrieve it 15:00 < mwalker> this is where I wish php had proper trees and tree searching 15:03 < GorillaWarfare> Wait, how is index => section name different from what it's doing now? 15:05 < mwalker> it's not; except for the bit where you can't search for a section name to find it's index 15:05 < mwalker> what you're doing right now is actually probably totally fine so long as you cache it 15:05 < mwalker> it's just that you dont want to do this operation for every page 15:05 < GorillaWarfare> Even for 40,000 sections? 15:05 < GorillaWarfare> Ohh; it is doing it for every page 15:06 < GorillaWarfare> And the navbars aren't currently cached 15:06 < mwalker> check 15:06 < GorillaWarfare> So it could be slooow 15:06 < mwalker> indeed! 15:06 < GorillaWarfare> Hmm... so how would we do this.. 15:06 < GorillaWarfare> Create each navbar at once and cache them sometime? 15:06 < mwalker> the smaller advantage of just having a simple lookup table without the rest of the metadata is that then you dont have to store all the metadata into memcache 15:07 < mwalker> well; pre-generate the metadata required for each navbar 15:08 < mwalker> but with 20k sections you're going to run into other problems -- like how do you even display that 15:09 < GorillaWarfare> Yeh 15:09 < GorillaWarfare> When Raylton was talking about "big books", I don't think I quite envisioned the true scale 15:09 < mwalker> do they have subsections? 15:09 < mwalker> because then you could cache it sort of as a tree 15:11 < GorillaWarfare> We can't count on it 15:12 < mwalker> grrr 15:12 < mwalker> ok -- so we know we have some limited structured data here 15:13 < mwalker> it might make sense to put this into a database table and then it's persistent and queryable 15:13 < GorillaWarfare> Eek 15:13 < GorillaWarfare> That... doesn't sound simple 15:13 < mwalker> probably easier than you think; but it will force you to make some modifications to your algorithms 15:14 < mwalker> because you'll pull in the section ordering data from the database; and the rest of the book metadata from json 15:14 < mwalker> this might help http://mikehillyer.com/articles/managing-hierarchical-data-in-mysql/ 15:14 < mwalker> just for a concept -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. Pick your favourite extension to break - I like Extension:UploadWizard 2. Change the name of its messages file in the extension's main PHP file - something like "$wgExtensionMessagesFiles['UploadWizard'] = 'LolUploadWizard.i18n.php';", but *do not* create that file. 3. Load a page that uses the message(s) in that message file - like Special:UploadWizard 4. Note the error. Expected behaviour. 5. Copy the actual messages file to the filename you made up, e.g. "cp UploadWizard.i18n.php LolUploadWizard.i18n.php" 6. Reload the page from step 3 - note that the error is gone, but no messages load 7. Refresh as much as you'd like. Rebuild the message and l10n caches if you want. Hilariously ineffective. 8. Change the name back in the PHP file and refresh the page. Tada. You could alternatively change it to a different nonexistent filename, refresh the page once, and then change it back to a proper name, and refresh it again. The change of filename causes the refresh. This is probably some overly clever feature that I'm misreading, but it means that if I forget to create an i18n file at first, I'll mysteriously not have messages load on the site. Which causes a bit of confusion. Some better handling somewhere might be good. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 51689] VisualEditor: Newly-added references need a page save before being reusable
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51689 John Broughton changed: What|Removed |Added CC||johnbrough...@comcast.net --- Comment #2 from John Broughton --- I can think of possible two reasons why this bug has not been given high priority: (1) Those unfamiliar with creating or substantially expanding Wikipedia articles don't think that this is a big deal. They are wrong - it IS a big deal. Not been able to cite the same source two or more times in an article, which is exceptionally common, causes all the problems noted by Pam, above. or (2) VE's fundamental architecture prevents it from adding footnotes created during an editing session to the list of footnotes that existed prior to that session, and if this were listed as a high-priority bug, that design mistake might be much more obvious. I really, really hope that the answer is not (2), because if so, that's a deal-breaker. The lack of such functionality is certainly, in and of itself, reason to NOW recommend that anyone writing a new article *not* do so in VE. (And, no, it's not acceptable to do everything but the footnotes in VE, then do footnotes with the wikitext editor - users absolutely should be footnoting their text additions with citations, *as they go along*, if only for efficiency.) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

Currently, we have the following on languages/messages/MessagesPt.php: > $separatorTransformTable = array( ',' => "\xc2\xa0", '.' => ',' ); so, the character "," should be treated as the decimal separator, and the result should be 4.5, as if the user had used {{#expr: 1.5 * 3 }} on enwiki.
