Even if in-string searching is used instead of left-string completion, there is
still the problem of templates whose names are completely unsearchable, such as
{{rp}} and pretty much everything in [[Category:Typing-aid templates]].
What would be very useful is a TemplateData field in which editors can list
relevant keywords that users might search for. Perhaps it could be called
"keywords" or "tags". Without something like this, it's not clear to me how new
users would ever find the templates they're looking for.

I think s/he's misunderstanding.
Steps to reproduce:
*Get a diff with an intermediary revision and none of them patrolled (so if we
have edit 1, 2 and 3 to a page, a diff between 1 and 3)
*Try to patrol it
*Expected behaviour, a patrol link that patrols all changes shown in the diff
*Actual behaviour, no patrol link.
This should be easy to reproduce locally (just make sure you are a different
user when patrolling then one editing, and set $wgUseRCPatrol to true).

A deeper investigation revealed additional issues:
1) Completely templated list items currently always break up lists in Parsoid.
Test case: echo -ne '*foo\n{{:User:GWicke/li|bar}}\n*baz' | node parse
2) This covers up another bug in the template encapsulation code.
Template-affected lists are only marked as such because the list handler starts
a new list for each templated list item. This (correctly) places the meta
element we use to track template-affected content outside the triggered by
the template-generated list item. Once 1) is fixed, we will have to fix this up
with a special rule in the encapsulation code that marks the parent list as
template-affected if one of its wikitext-syntax items is template-generated.
The meta element will end up between list items, so a propagation rule should
be sufficient.
None of this will do much for the ease of editing. I realize that fixing up a
lot of pages to use explicit bullets in the page will create a lot of work for
bots, but at the same time I don't see a sane alternative that provides a good
editing experience.

The problem is that the list is also template-affected, and needs to be marked
as such. A change in transclusion output (say, from *foo to #foo) will change
the list structure significantly, so it is not safe to mark the list items
only.
The example page exposes a different issue though, which you mention as well:
The comments between transclusions (which probably end up on their own line
after expansion) break up the list in Parsoid, but don't do so in PHP (bug
52762). This is not surprising as the PHP parser strips those comments before
doing anything else, but still something we could improve by not breaking up
the list.
Sadly, the effect of this will be that the entire list will be
template-affected.
This problem would not be there if the bullet for the list item was not
templated:

* [[Christina Rau]], geb. Delius (* 1956), deutsche Politologin
In this case we know that the first list item will always create an unordered
list, no matter what the transclusion generates (ignoring unbalanced
transclusions for now). Each item will be editable separately without being
sucked into a big template-affected block.

If your account has the "patroller" permission any one edit in a group is unpatrolled then the entire group shows up as unpatrolled. Clicking the "X changes" link next to the grouped item leads to a page that may have a "mark as patrolled" link, but that link only marks the most recent edit as patrolled and NOT the entire group for which the diff is being displayed. A patroller can still scroll through each individual revision and mark each one as patrolled, but it is far more efficient to be able to mark the grouped diff as patrolled. The reason that this is a big deal on Wikivoyage is that we really do try to patrol every edit since our wiki is a target for business spamming. Since most editors will make multiple (and often dozens) of edits to an article, being able to flag all edits in a grouped diff as "patrolled" is a HUGE time saver. So, I asked another developer to take a look at this, and he said:
"I've looked into it but can't replicate/don't understand the issue. I
caused Special:RecentChanges to show a group of edits, but all the diff
links ('2 changes', 'cur', 'prev') I get when expanding it lead to pages
with patrol links."
I'm going to ask him to look again at

that helps. I tried going to my preferences on English Wikivoyage and couldn't
find a preference with the word "enhanced" in it ("But grouped edits, which are
achieved when you enable "Use enhanced recent changes (requires JavaScript)" in
special:preferences, do not show the "marked as patrolled" link after reaching
the edit comparison page.") so I can't figure out how to reproduce this either!
So perhaps people could give some current screenshots of the broken
functionality, and let us know what they've set in their Recent Changes and
Gadgets tabs in their preferences (e.g.,
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rc and
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets ).

Memory overhead is only incurred per Map, but not per item. Seems to be the best option for large maps.
