Bug ID: 55906
Summary: 'Start new thread' link is red when there is no
header.
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: REL1_21 branch
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: trivial
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: LiquidThreads
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: volo...@whengendarmesleeps.org
CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org, jforres...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

To reproduce:
(for example)

Go to the talk page which has no header and begin editing it.

The message at the top reads:
: You are editing a discussion page header. Headers are for announcements and
prefaces. You might instead want to start a new discussion.

Note that [[start a new discussion]] is a red link.

This is not the expected behaviour after adding liquid thread extension.

[Bug 55905] New: user preference to override collapsing of sidebar items in Vector skin

Bug ID: 55905

   Product: MediaWiki extensions

The user preference to "Enable collapsing of items in the sidebar in Vector
skin" has been killed and the collapsing is now forced on everyone (for reasons
that I cannot begin to fathom).

Contrary to the idea (apparently) set forth in bug 23807, this needs to be
restored to a user preference. If Vector is the default skin, we should allow
people to configure it in their preferences (the normal place to configure
things), not rely on users creating personal CSS or JS code to do it.

You could suppress notifications if the transcluded page is over a certain
number of bytes, or contains more than a certain number of usernames. (I think
that last one might be done already?) Getting the cut-off point right would be
hard, though.

The ability to override the collapsing of the sidebar items should be restored
to a user preference (or a gadget). Users shouldn't have to cobble together a
custom CSS or JS solution to counteract this rudeness.

I don't know why anyone thought "hiding" user interface items was a good idea
the first place

2013-10-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54927

The problem here is that the contents of that comment isn't matching this
regex,

  /^\{.*\}$/.test( content )

https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Parsoid/blob/master/js/lib/mediawiki.DOMPostProcessor.js#L95

It's not recognizing the last character as }. Taking content.charCodeAt(
content.length - 1 ) returns undefined. Probably because of the unicode
characters. Switching to something like,

  /^\{\"@type\"/.test( content )

seems to work but I'm interested to see where exactly things are going wrong.

[Bug 43722] Move test.wikipedia.org from mw1017 and make it a more "normal" test wiki

2013-10-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon

So, after thinking about this (and talking with Chad): are you sure it's doing
what you think it's doing?

testwiki no longer is served from NFS, so you actually have to scap to update
the code on testwiki.

That is intentional as testing should happen either in development or while
it's on the Beta Cluster. Then on the production cluster when it hits all of
the test wikis.

While we removed the NFS hack, we do still need to remove the 'serve from one
specific machine' hack.

Indeed.

Possibly, but I feel that this conflicts with the expressed will of the
community (to prevent anonymous users from being able to use VisualEditor).

Understood the use-case (I have the issue too).

Because it was enabled for all anons; when the configuration was changed, this

[Bug 55889] Thread-safe versions of the Generators

> The next layer, comms.threadedhttp, supports asynchronous requests. [...] I

I've noticed that while writing the answer to Gerard's questions today :)

> For saving pages, which (I think) is the most relevant place for async
> request,
> we already have support, where requests that do not return a reply that has
> to
> be handled can be handled asynchronously - see Page.put_async.

I've experimented with put_async with mixed results. When the upload works,
it's mostly OK, however when one request hits an error (like a 504 from the
server) it just keeps trying again and again, keeping the thread blocked.

Instead, the request should probably be de-queued, processed and, if a callback
has been registered, the callback should be called in order to allow the bot to
re-queue the request. This, however, could cause trouble if the order of the
requests is important. The bot can receive a callback, but AFAIK it cannot
remove already queued requests. Also, what happens if no callback has been
registered? Should we simply re-queue the request? I don't have a perfect
solution at this time, but this is a point that should be considered.

Another possible issue, that PWB can't really do much about, is that one can
get a 504 even if the save is successful, making the re-queueing useless. I
don't have a good solution for that either, but we could consult with the
Wikimedia developers.

> For pagegenerators, we might be able to win a bit by requesting the (i+1)th
> page before returning the i-th page (or, for the PreloadingGenerator, by
> requesting the (i+1)th batch before all pages from the i-th batch have been
> returned).

This should be especially useful if it can be controlled by the user. Do you
have any ideas on how to do this?

I think there were some good ideas brought up on this bug. Should we start a
thread on the mailing list so we can gather more input on this?

On English Wikipedia, the VE is now not offered for anons & people who have not
enabled a user pref.

However if the user loads a URL that invokes VE (i.e. includes ?veaction=edit),
it would be nice if VE loaded irrespective of user preferences. If
?veaction=edit in the URL isnt explicit enough to bypass some checks,
?veaction=edit&debug=true should just do it.

That would streamline testing in many browsers, as we wouldnt need to log in on
each browser - which is a bugger because logging into a second browser causes
the first browser to be logged out.(bug 49890)

(apologies for the automatic translation, from spanish)
The code to generate a non-breaking space is very complex to write (& nbsp ;),
and that reading the code, cause confusion and delays.
I suggest you assign a synonym to this code that is easy to write, and does not
cause discomfort to read the code.
I suggest the following code &_

[Bug 25127] Simple Search: Fulltext search impossible with disabled javascript or search suggestions are not supported

2013-10-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25127

--- Comment #12 from Jared Zimmerman (WMF) ---
@Bartosz I'm not sure I follow, looks like the JS (default) mode is Go, for
articles where there is an exact match, what is the change you're proposing?

also to your point about power users, i think you are right, which is why i
would say those user will know to press enter to send their search, rather than
needing an explicit button to press.

just because you are a power user though doesn't mean you will psychically know
there is an article that is an exact match, so full text search by default is
probably a better experience for those users since they won't have had the
search suggestions a a clue ahead of time.

[Bug 55889] Thread-safe versions of the Generators

2013-10-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55889

--- Comment #3 from Merlijn van Deen ---
I see. There are already some features in place, but we are maybe not using
asynchronous requests at all points where it might be useful.

First of all, connections should be re-used - this is already a feature in the
httplib2 library.

The next layer, comms.threadedhttp, supports asynchronous requests ('features'
would be a closer term - basically, you create a request and then wait for a
lock to be released). However, I don't think we use this feature anywhere, as
it's not exposed in the higher-up layers.

For saving pages, which (I think) is the most relevant place for async request,
we already have support, where requests that do not return a reply that has to
be handled can be handled asynchronously - see Page.put_async.

For pagegenerators, we might be able to win a bit by requesting the (i+1)th
page before returning the i-th page (or, for the PreloadingGenerator, by
requesting the (i+1)th batch before all pages from the i-th batch have been
returned).

Gah. Can you test https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/82100/ for me and see if
it solves the issue by chance? It's a larger patch to redo the search box on
Vector.

(I temporarily deployed it on http://users.v-lo.krakow.pl/~matmarex/testwiki/ ,
you can test there if you don't have a local wiki to try on.)

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25127

I commented about this on the patch already, but let's copy&paste here. This
discussion shouldn't be taking place in two venues at the same time :/

I'd still prefer the two-button layout; I think that anybody with JavaScript
disabled these days is some kind of power-user. I would expect those to be able
to figure out the difference.

I'm willing to give in, though, since apparently I'm the minority here.

There's one small issue with this approach, though – we'd have to switch the
JS-enhanced form to "Go" mode by default (just like it is now). I'm not sure
what would be the best place to do this; Vector's JS or mediawiki.searchSuggest
itself are two options. Help?

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55889

As I understand it, I/O happens outside of GIL. As the API requests are the
most time-consuming part of many of my robots (and more precisely the
connection to the servers), being able to do requests from several threads
should somewhat improve performance (as long as the throttling is not too
aggressive).

I've noticed that the preloading limit is not only 50 pages, making this
problem even more stringent for many small pages. It's probably also a good
idea for things like image upload/download.

If it helps, we can do some tests to see if performance is increased for a
simple file downloader?

Yes. On my current setup, with with FF24, it looks like it's not as dramatic as
before. The search icon is lower than it should be at the default zoom level,
but it only extends past the bottom of the search box if I shrink the zoom
level to 90% or lower.

On Chromium, it is aligned properly at all zoom levels.

Zuul fetch the repositories using their project names under
gallium.wikimedia.org:/srv/ssd/zuul/git

Hence we have:

 wikimedia/fundraising/crm
 wikimedia/fundraising/drupal
 wikimedia/fundraising/civicrm

The crm one was empty, most probably because git clone refuse to process
on an existing directory. So I created it myself:

 git remote add origin
ssh://jenkins-...@ytterbium.wikimedia.org:29418/wikimedia/fundraising/crm
 git fetch

Which is nice. But that `crm` repository has two directories `civicrm`
and `drupal` which are already cloned by Zuul to proceed changes made
against wikimedia/fundraising/{civicrm,drupal}.

So that is most probably going to be slightly conflicting since Zuul
attempt to reset the repository to be able to merge the received change
on the tip of the branch.
